Things To Do
Boating is one of the most popular pastimes on the Island. Kayaks, canoes, motorboats and pontoon boats are available within walking distance of The Bayfront Cottage. You can rent or charter a boat and fish or explore the area. Fishing is at its finest in the surrounding waters of the Matlacha Pass, Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico. You also have your own dock on the waterfront, so fishing is at your doorstep. World famous shelling can be found on the snow-white beaches of nearby Sanibel and Captiva Islands, as well as Fort Myers Beach. If golfing is your passion, Pine Island, Cape Coral and Fort Myers offer top-rated, championship courses. There are over 30 golf courses in the area.
The Fishing is Phenomenal! Fish off the “Fishingest Bridge”, just a block away from your front door. During World War II bomber gunners (airmen) stationed at Page and Buckingham Fields discovered the great fishing off of the then wooden bridge and called it the “Fishingest Bridge in Florida”. The name has stuck to this day. The Matlacha bridge was made even more famous by author Richard Powell in his book, Pioneer, Go Home. The book was later made into an Elvis Presley movie, Follow That Dream.
If McDonald’s and Wal-Mart are on your “gotta have” list, Cape Coral is conveniently just minutes away where you will also find shopping boutiques, fine dining, a children’s science center and the city owned “Yacht Club” which is free and open to the public. There you will find a beach, fishing pier, tennis courts and a waterfront snack type eatery. Sun Splash, a 12-acre Water Park and Greenwell’s Family Park, which offers batting cages, miniature golf and a go cart track are also in Cape Coral. Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve is 11 miles away, and has over 300 acres of unspoiled wetland and mangrove swamps abounding with all manner of birds and marine life and also offers kayak rentals and an extensive hiking trail.
