"How SWEET it is!"

Guest: Shelley (Grand Marais, Minnesota, USA)
Date of Stay: 04/01/12 Review Submitted: 05/01/12

Many thanks to Justin for sharing his amazing casita with us. Everything was perfect - clean, well-appointed, safe and comfortable. We spent a lot of time on the beautiful patio. The location is ideal for walking, great biking, and central for car trips. The Co-Op is conveniently close too. LOTS to do in and around ABQ. The bonus was getting to know Susana who lives in the casita at the back of the property. Amazingly helpful and sweet! Thanks Susana!

Snowbirds in Albuquerque

We stayed at Casa de Calderones for the month of February 2012. It is a lovely cottage for 2 people, lots of room, well maintained, well equipped kitchen, huge table for puzzles/scrapbooking, off street parking and the caretaker next door, Susana, is an added bonus if you have a problem. The cottage is located close to Old Town and a primary interstate so everything is easily available. Justin wondered what we'd do in ALBQ...we did a lot...hiked the Petroglyphs, Pueblo Montano, Museum of Natural History, zoo, aquarium, botanical gardens, volcanos, Hot Air Balloon Museum AND a balloon ride, Sandia Peak, Old Town (check out the Rattlesnake Museum), ALBQ Museum, Embudo Canyon. Breakfast at the Frontier...get the cinnamon rolls! And we were able to do easy day trips...Tent Rocks, Bandera Volcano & Ice Cave, Sky City, El Malpais, and we took the Railrunner to Santa Fe for the day. For shoppers, check out ALL the shops in Old Town, Kokopelli Quilting and Jackalope's. And then there's the many casinos. There is something for everyone here in Albuquerque and this cottage is the perfect place to stay to see and do everything. We highly recommend it. Thanx Justin and Susana. We loved it!

my husband and i stayed here for a week at the beginning of september. this is a wonderful house has everything you could want. we had too many restaurants we wanted to visit so we never even took advantage of the great kitchen! the decoration is amazing. having susana on site was such a comfort to us, since this was our first time renting a home for vacation. we felt safe, comfortable, and well cared for. the house was clean, and so well appointed! close to everything (though, we had a car). working with justin and susana was easy and convenient. they are both super friendly. the dining room table is amazing, you could host a fabulous dinner party here. or just hide from the world for a week, like we did.

I have been staying at Casa de Calderones for the last 4 days. I am writing this on my last night here because I am compelled to say thank you to Justin for having such a wonderful home. My stay was perfect. This home is well equipped, well appointed and cleaner than my own home! I felt safe and comfortable. Susana, who9 lives in the casita in the back of the property is a gem. She was helpful and kind and attentive to my questions. You can be assured that I will be back to stay for my next trip to Albuquerque. I have found my home away from home.

Hi Justin, We had a wonderful visit - the location was perfect for walking everywhere...yes we are walkers. We learned so much about ABQ. Everyone was so helpful everywhere we went. We did Old Town, Downtown, Route66, ElCamino to Spanish Cultural Center, burgers at Wimpy's, The University and the wonderful old neighborhoods surrounding, Rio Grande trail South and North. Loved the Nature Center - coyotes, roadrunners and sandhill cranes. Best restaurants - The Flying Star, The Range Cafe and Church Street Cafe. The Casa and Susana were so right on. Loved your Mata Ortiz pots - we have been to the artists homes in Mexico twice. You have made it very comfortable and the info drawer was so helpful. Thanks,I'm sure we will be back. Linda

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Casa Calderones. Very conveninet to Old Town--walking distance if you don't mind a little hike (about 10 blocks or so). Comfortable and quiet with all the amenities. Justin has done a wonderful job of restoring the house. Susana the caretaker was extremely helpful and accomodating. The Nature Center just a mile or so away is great for walking and birding. Highly recommend.

Charming Casita

Guest: Jim and Diane (Maryland)
Date of Stay: 10/11/10 Review Submitted: 10/20/10

After a friend recommended vrbo.com I was very fortunate to find this casita for our recent stay in NM. It was charming, immaculately clean, the towels were big and fluffy, the bed was comfy and the small garden and outdoor seating perfect for the evening glass of wine and/or cookout with friends (yes, there is a grill!!!). Even the kitchen was adequately equipped which made meal prep and clean up easy. The neighborhood was very quiet too which was a pleasing bonus. I don't think we will ever stay anywhere else in Albuquerque as long as Justin is renting this casita. He was an absolute pleasure to deal with and Susana the caretaker was so helpful and considerate during our stay.

Hello, Our stay auto-less went very well. We walked to co-op, Old Town, St. Clair winery, Botanical Gardens et al at will. We took bus on Central to grocery, downtown train station [for trip to Sante Fe] and found bike shop on Gold St. opened for 3 weeks and became their 1st rental customers; we went on a 35 mile bike excursion. Our only wish would be that bus on Rio Grande would run more frequently. I'm sure budget concerns limit this route. All in all we managed on-footedly well. Thanks for asking. Kent Johnson P.S. Loved the house.

Hidden Treasure

I cannot rave enough about this property. I could live in this house and not change a thing. The interior is elegantly, subtly Southwest, with intriguing photos and art on the walls, impressive pieces of pottery and colored glass, rare found items, all in a tranquil uncluttered setting. Very quiet, safe, and secure behind adobe walls and gate. Listing photos were enticing but there is so much more. It is obvious that the upkeep of this house and grounds is an ongoing labor of love. Not a spec of dust on anything, including outside light fixtures! A fully functional house. We lacked for nothing. Instructions on the table directed us to a nearby co-op market where we found fresh croissants and strawberries, suggested among other activities a slow drive on a winding road to a farmer's market and vineyard. It was perfect. Absolutely perfect.

Excellent experience in a beautiful house. The house is beautifully maintained, felt cool inside with 90 degree weather outside, on a quiet street and close to old town. Lovely backyard where I watched hummingbirds play at the feeder. Property manager was helpful and unobtrusive. I will definitely stay here again!

Beautiful house and garden, exactly as depicted in the photos and very well equipped. We didn't see much of the landlord, Justin, but the caretaker, Sue, was lovely and very helpful, checking in with us on a daily basis. We plan to rent every year until we have our own place in Albuquerque.

My husband found this casita on the Internet and we decided to take our chances. We spent mid-Feb - mid-March 2010 at this home and were extremely satisfied with our stay. It's everything the description promises -- and then some! The house was spic and span when we arrived; it is tastefully decorated, with every imaginable piece of cookware, electronics, and a wi-fi set up. The owner was accommodating in every respect, and it was reassuring to know that he is located in another home right on the premises. The location is excellent -- close to (but not directly on) a main drag -- Rio Grande Blvd -- with easy access to nearby Old Town as well as downtown ABQ and the major highways. The home has a drawerful of brochures about local attractions, daytrips, etc. The zoo, botanical gardens and city museums were close by in Old Town, as were restaurants and shops. On the Internet, we even found out that as seniors, we could join the municipal 50+ fitness centers for the bargain price of $13/year! ABQ welcomes visitors, who can obtain library cards during their stay. We would heartily recommend this property to anyone interested in an attractive, reasonable and convenient environment. Kudos to the owner for his care and attention to detail in this home. We would happily return.

We loved staying in the Casa de Calderones! It is very roomy, neat, quiet, well supplied and very comfortable. We live in the country in Ohio and were wondering how quiet it would be there in the city. It was as peaceful as our home in Hocking county. It's convenient to everything in Albuquerque. We highley recommend the restaurant right there on Indian School accross Rio Grand Blvd. I can't remember the name of it but, it was really good and has a delightful history to it. Also, check out the shop on the corner diagonal from the restaurant. Justin is a wonderful host and has a very nice little place for a relaxing vacation. When we return to Albuquerque for a vaction, we'll be returning here.

Owner response:(That restaurant is called "Las Mananitas".)~Justin.

WOW....what a wonderful place to spend our vacation. We spent a wonderful, serene week in the Case de Calderones and couldn't have asked for a nicer, cleaner place to stay. Justin has spoiled us for any future trips to this area - we just WON'T stay anywhere else! We were close to everything we wanted to do - and yet could relax and get away from it all when we choose to do so. It was so very special and we just cannot thank Justin enough for providing us with everything we could have needed. This is definitely the place to stay when you travel to ABQ. Thanks again - we'll be back!

"Justin, Thanks again for everything! We've really enjoyed our stay here- some of the best rest we've had in a while. It was very comfortable and we really appreciate all the local information. This has been the best city for food, we're sure to have gained 10 pounds each but it was worth it. Thanks for your hospitality. We hope to see you again and we'll spread the word about our wonderful stay! Sincerely, J.R and Erica Mounts."

Driving all the way from British Columbia, the eleven nights spent at Casa de Calderones was the highlight of our visit to New Mexico. This extremely well appointed house was so comfortable and handy to everything, that my wife did not want to leave. The antique furnishings just add to the character and charm. The house, the furnishings, the location, and Justin the house owner, exceeded our expectations in every way. We were so pleased with the quality of everything related to our experience that Justin’s home provided, my wife and I drove all the way to Bisbee Arizona to stay at Justin’s other property, which did not disappoint! We are already planning a longer return trip, but only if Justin’s house is available.

Charming, well-decorated home on a quiet side street. Crisp, IMMACULATE, and well-appointed with beautiful dishes, fluffy towels and plenty of basic supplies generously supplied by Justin. The rooms are spacious and the kitchen is a joy to cook in, perfect for our Thanksgiving meal. Beautiful garden tended with love and creativity. Eco-focused home with wood burning stove and solar heating. More than we were expecting. Justin is responsive, easy to work with and a thoughtful host. We would definitely rent this home again.

Casa de Calderones was the perfect place to stay for our 5 nights in Albuqueque. It was conveniently located to all the activities that the city had to offer. The house itself was wonderfully comfortable so we were able to relax in the evening after being out all day. The garden was the perfect place to enjoy breakfast or a glass of wine. We are looking forward to another trip to Albuquerque so we can stay here again.
