A Wonderful Getaway

Guest: David (Lethbridge, Alberta)
Date of Stay: 01/14/12 Review Submitted: 01/30/12

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this condo. Although the resort is about thirty years old, the condo has been nicely renovated, especially the kitchen and master ensuite. The ensuite shower is so big, the door could be removed. The unit is very private and quiet, although it does look (through the trees) over the tennis courts. The kitchen has everything one needs. The owners have not adequately described the great view from the lanai towards the setting sun, nor the beautiful songs of the birds at sunrise and sunset. We did not use the AC (as we're all there for the heat, right? It was -30° C in Alberta the week we were in Wailea.). We would be very happy to return to this condo.

I have stayed at this condo numerous times over the last several years. It is very well appointed and comfortable. I have found the owners to be VERY accomodating of my specific needs for arrival and departure times and they were always happy to receive info about and fix any issues regarding the upkeep of thier beautiful unit. I highly reccommend this condo for a wonderful stay in Maui.

Great Find

We really enjoyed our stay in your Maui condo. Everything was better than promised, especially the kitchen. I am a cook and the kitchen had all the tools, with everything we needed to put togrther great meals except the ingredients. We shopped some of the small local markets for provisions and found everything we needed. The place was clean and comfortable. You have done a wondorful job of decorating. The availability of the washer and dryer was a bonus. This will be the first place we consider when we return to Maui.

A very nice unit.

I have stayed at GC maybe 16 times and maybe 6 times at this unit. I have been so pleased with my experience there that I actually changed my next trip to Maui from March to May so that I could get this unit when it was available. My dealings with the owner have always been pleasant and I have been asked several times if the unit was in need of anything so someone could address it. No condo rental is going to be perfect....maybe renting at Grand Marriot for $600/night would get you closer though. I have never experienced too much noise or ANY odors at all in this unit. My previous stay was November 2011. So. I will simply say that while one person may have something negative to say, it has not been my experience. During my last stay, the light in the shower went out. No one could have known that would happen. On a trip into Kahului, I stopped at Home Depot and got a replacement bulb (specialty item). I advised the owner that I had replaced the lamp and sent a photo of the item as an FYI as is is not a regular bulb. I was contacted and received thanks and an offer to reimburse me for the bulb, which I declined. In ANY home stuff happens; in my case there was no inconvenience and I felt that the owner did everything in a reasonable way. Just as an FYI. The linens in this unit have consistently been in new or near new condition. The kitchen items have been functional and the only thing that I have had to buy was a meat thermometer as I cooked a turkey at Thanksgiving. As for the electronics...frankly I could not say. I have a laptop and that is about all I use to download my photos and to check email. Other than that....I come to Maui to be out in nature. I hope I never have to know if the DVD player works or not. I would hope...that once notified any owner would take care of a $100 issue and I have faith this is already taken care of...if it indeed was a problem. BTW--I am using this property because of a recommendation from someone else who was here in recent years.

Grand Champions Wailea (unit with the black mold)

Guest: Spudman (Washington State)
Date of Stay: 12/19/11 Review Submitted: 01/06/12

I have stayed at other units in the Grand Champions before and this one was by far the worst unit I have stayed in. It seems nice in the pictures and the large shower and granite counter tops in the kitchen/bathroom are the only reason this is not a 1 star. Upon arriving the door was wide open to the unit because the cleaning people did not know how to put the key in the lock box so they left the door open. It was very hot and when we went to turn on the air conditioning the systems were completely covered with growing black mold in the condenser as well as the AC air discharge vents and they had obviously been that way for awhile. The owner had a local handy man come down the next day and help clean them but with it being so hot I had to run one unit in the back room to help cool it down but I am sure that it was not worth becoming sick the rest of the vacation with a sinus infection brought on by a fungal infection. The rest of the stay was so-so, the units once clean could never keep up with the heat of the afternoon with sun coming through the window and it being a top level unit. The grounds crew shack was down at the bottom of the stairs and in the early morning and all day you could here people going in and out next to the unit with power equipment and smoking on lunch breaks was bad enough it could be smelt inside. Most of the unit was all locked up allowing for almost no closet or pantry space because I am assuming their were personnal items locked away. The DVD player did not work in the house for watching late night movies and the internet router was going bad and would have to be reset a few times per day. In addition to all that the majority of the dishes and glasses were dirty upon arrival with lipstick marks on half of all the cups. The coffee filter in the coffee maker was dirty as well as the permanent filter in the back for the water (mold/hair?). I ended up spending most of my time at another condo as I could barely stand this one, by far nothing in comparision to some of the other, even older units. I am pretty easy going and do not expect

Owner response:The guest is an unhappy man who apparently brought his anger with him to Maui and happened to stay in our condo. In ten years, we have had nothing but positive reviews for this unit, which we cherish as a second home. When he and his family arrived, the door was open because our cleaner had left it open for their convenience because he had a problem with the key. Before he left for the day, he wrote a note for the guest to find to explain why the door was open. We are sympathetic to the mold problem our guest encountered. We responded to his concern immediately. As soon as we were made aware of it, we contacted our regular maintenance man. He quickly went to the condo and thoroughly cleaned the filters in the air conditioners. Maui is a humid tropical place; mold accumulates rather quickly. The guest’s assertion that the air conditioners had "obviously been that way for awhile" is an indeterminate notion. The fact that the guest had to use air conditioners in three rooms to cool the space makes sense. It is likely that he is knows something of fungal infections as a potato farmer. But it is likely that the respiratory problems he experienced had more to do with traveling on an airplane across the ocean in an aluminum tube where the bacteria from hundreds of passengers is recirculated in the cabin during the voyage. We contacted the guest after the maintenance man had cleaned the air conditioners. The guest told us everything was fine. Our maintenance man said the guest thanked him, When the family left the condo, our cleaner told us it was the worst mess he had ever seen in a rental property. Breakfast cereal was spread throughout the unit, stickers children play with were affixed to many places on the kitchen floor and had to be scraped off and many surfaces were sticky with something left by children. No effort was made to at least leave the unit in some semblance of cleanliness. These guests clearly have little regard for the other's property. The act of paying for rent does not give them the right to trash the place. The kitchen was left if a despicable state. We are not disturbed by this man’s bitter and nasty review. We know our condo is very clean. While he describes himself as 'easygoing', he seems far from it. He is obviously unhappy about something much greater than his condo stay.
