Welcome to the 'House of Shimmering Water' - A two bedroom, two bathroom vacation rental located in Waiohinu (2 miles from Na'alehu) on the south-side of Hawaii's Big Island.
With the island's many diverse climates, the south-side offers some of the best weather and scenic beauty. Many of my guests have said that they feel like they are on top of the world when they arrive to the house.
It's truly the kind of paradise that you come to expect when visiting the Hawaiian Islands.
PROPERTY DESCRIPTION
The home has 2 bedrooms and 2 full baths with an upstairs loft, patio (lanai), and covered parking on two private acres of grassland and tropical plants. The property's hillside location has breath-taking panoramic views of the ocean and valley below with some of the best weather on the island.
The interior has a natural wood decor with large sliding windows and is beautifully furnished with Asian/Zen-like furniture and artwork. Satellite t.v., a dvd movie and book collection, 'Netflix', wireless internet, a computer, clock/cd radios, and a cell phone for international travelers is provided.
Both bedrooms have a full-size (double-occupancy) bed with skylights in each room. The master bathroom has a stone tile interior with a shower/tub plus a large walk-in shower in the second bathroom. Linens, bath towels, and beach towels are provided.
The home is equipped with a full kitchen and a washer and dryer. There is also an outdoor BBQ and picnic area. The home supplies fresh county water (not water catchment) and has remote gate access. There are also several tame carribean sheep that can be seen grazing along the grassland.
LOCATION DESCRIPTION
Waiohinu translated into English is defined as 'shimmering water'. The town itself is a residential community located less than 5 minutes from Na'alehu in the Ka'u district of the Big Island which is approximately 1 hour from Kailua-Kona and 45 minutes from Hilo.
Local attractions include a nearby golf course, Big Island's only local winery, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach (Turtle Beach), Green Sands Beach (one of only two green sand beaches in the world), Volcano National Park, as well as several restaurants, galleries, and farmer's markets. The nearest beach is less than 10 minutes away and several hiking trails are walking-distance.
Also located a short distance away is South Point (the southern most point of the U.S.A), several natural hotsprings, Green Lake, and some great beaches for snorkeling and kayaking. Just one hour North of Hilo is Waipio Valley and the Hamakua Coast.

This house is really spectacular! We have stayed there three years in a row now and are never disappointed. The thing we love so much is the privacy and the view. It is fenced in and on a mountain side looking far out at the ocean. You can also see cows and horses grazing on a hilltop, clouds rolling in and over the mountain, and your very own flock of sheep. There are oranges, bananas, avocados and we have even seen wild turkeys! It is a bit of a white knuckle ride up the mountain to get there, but totally doable with a four wheel drive. Aaron works hard to meet your every need. He responds to emails and phone calls promptly. His property managers rock. Our kids love this place. The interior is simple, clean and has plenty of windows to look out. The bathrooms are beautiful. Truly a one-of-a-kind getaway. If we had to complain about anything, we could use a bigger, more comfortable bed...but that is not enough to keep us away! We highly recommend this rental and are planning our return trip :-) Thanks Aaron!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you very much for your kind review. It gives us great joy to be able to offer you a beautiful and comfortable home away from home. A note to potential guests: The road going to my home can be driven with any kind of vehicle so 4x4’s are not required. We look forward to welcoming you with Aloha!

We cannot say enough nice things about this lovely home on the hill above Waiohinu! First stayed here a couple of years ago, and we've had a magical return visit for the 2012-2013 holiday season. Super quiet off-the-grid home with a lovely floor plan and views overlooking the village and all the way out to sea. Private and secure with personalized security codes, awesome spacious bedrooms with skylights above the bed so you can star-gaze from the comfort of your pillow. Internet for email and television (if you must have those things during your vacation), and plenty of flowering plants around you, as well as guava, banana, passion fruit, lime and orange growing all around you. Huge windows for enjoying the hilltop views from all around the house - including a cupola atop the house with 360 degree views and accommodations for kids/teenagers. Ka'u is a wild and remote part of Hawaii. We love it, but it is not for everyone. If you want lots of fancy restaurants and big-box shopping, this isn't it. But if you want to enjoy green sand and black sand beaches, hiking to ancient Hawaiian archaeological sites, days of hiking and sight seeing at volcanoes national park, and fresh foods from local farmers markets, you won't find a better retreat!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Two months in paradise at House of Shimmering Waters! Magnificient views, quality furnishings, immaculate condition and all accuratley described. Aaron provided great suggestions for activities during our two month stay. Though we never met he is quite the host. His caretaker, Rex, was most helpful and accomodating and was most accomodating in insuring we had a pleasant stay. If you desire peace, solitude and being away from the hustle of tourist life then this is the place for you. We found it conveniently located about half way between Hilo and Kona. This enabled us to explore in different directions and make the best utilization of our time. Green sand beach, black sand beach, sea turtles, national parks, hiking, fruit trees, Kona coffee...everything we dreamed it would be! We loved Naalehu and especially the Hana Hou Restaurant and the Wednesday and Saturday Farmers Market. Can't wait to get back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

If you want privacy and no neighbors this is the place for you. I walked in and immediately felt all the hassles of getting there disappear – I relaxed. Nice territorial view from a nice size lanai. The house is as described in the listing. It is about 30 minutes from Volcano.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Where Old Hawai'i Lives!

The district of Ka'u is not only the largest in the islands, it is also the only place that has never been conquered by invaders domestic or foreign. The people here are fiercely independent, and Ka'u thus remains one of the most remote, little visited, and authentic places in the islands. If you're looking to get a feel for what old Hawai'i must have been like, this is it. The wonderful home, fully "off the grid," is situated at rain forest altitude about the sleepy town of Waiohinu. The house is every bit as delightful as other reviewers have said, and it is very near to location of the ancient Hawai'ian village of Ha'ao. Giant mango trees, eucalyptus, banana, hibiscus and fantastic bamboo forests surround you. From the Volcanoes National Park to the east, Punalu'u Black Sands beach nearby, the Tibetan Temple above Pahala, to the cliffs of Ka Lae and more, there is much to see and do. But, you'll find that once you're comfortably seated on the open-air lanai with a fresh cup of Kona coffee in hand - you may just not want to ever leave the property at all!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

"We have enjoyed the stay very much. Here are some impressions from our 15-year old son Jan: *The House of Shimmering Waters* is a wonderful and relaxing place to unwind and let go of worries. We found the spectacular view and the natural setting among uniquely Hawaiian vegetation quite pleasant. The caretaker, Ken, was very friendly and even informed us of multiple beaches and other less known locales on the island. However, we did not put this information to any good use as we just could not get ourselves to leave this beautiful and calming estate. And, although the natural aspect of this place was soothing, the wireless internet and satellite television kept us in touch with civilization from afar. Overall, our stay there could not have been better. We truly enjoyed every single day of our vacation."Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

"We had a wonderful time at your place! It was absolutely beautiful, and perfect for our stay and what we were looking for. It was incredibly relaxing. Your caretaker was also really great--he was helpful and really fun to talk to. We all agreed that we would like to stay there again sometime. Our vacation ended much too soon! I really can't think of anything to suggest that would have made our stay more pleasant! Thank you for keeping such a nice home, and we hope to rent it again from you sometime soon!"Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

"We had a great trip to the island and appreciated your house as well as your recommendations. Your location was wonderful and suited us just fine, including the peaceful serenity, sheep and views. Caretaker Ken was extremely helpful and pleasant guy. Farmers' market and local restaurant were fun. I want to reiterate our pleasure in your renting it for our holiday use."Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: In 2005 my mother purchased her home on the Big Island of Hawaii which had been a dream of hers for many years. She was an active member of the Ka’u Preservation that continues to preserve one of the last remaining black sand beach-fronts on the Big Island and home to an amazing ecosystem of sea turtles and other marine life. I currently live in Northern California with my fiancee and our dog, Sake. We frequently visit the Big Island during our free time. Rex, our caretaker is a former resident of Oahu who now lives on the Big Island and has previously worked with the National Park Service. Our vacation home is licensed and accredited by the State of Hawaii and we are members of the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau (HVCB).
Why the Owner Chose Naalehu:
It was our family's life-long dream to own a home in this beautiful and relaxing environment.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
You really do feel like you're on top of the world when you arrive to the house. It's truly an amazing experience to be able to wake up in the morning, look out at the horizon, and see 180 degree views of the ocean and valley below. The nights are just as beautiful with millions of stars that light up the sky. The location of the house has easy access to many attractions while still providing lots of privacy and solitude.
