Map & Owner's Profile
Maison Juliette: Luxury 4 BR Home in Center of Carcassonne
Year Purchased: 2008
Why the Owner Chose Carcassonne
We wanted a vacation home in the center of a small city - walking distance shops, restaurants and tourist sights - so we could relax and experience the European pedestrian-centered lifestyle, and our teenagers could be independent but still safe.
Carcassonne is friendly city with about 50,000 residents. The Cite is the largest restored castle in all of Europe, attracting three million visitors each year. Carcassonne is far enough south that the weather is temperate all year. The beach is only a 45-minute drive away - unless you count the lake, which the locals call "Carcassonne Beach" :-).
The Unique Benefits at this House
Walk to everywhere! And if you really want a rental car, there's plenty of free on-street parking directly in front of the house.
One of the largest and best-restored medieval castles in France, with 3 million visitors/year. The medieval walled town lies on the right bank of the River Aude and is featured on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. It has 52 towers and 2 rings of town walls making a total of 3 km of battlements. It is still home today to its population of approximately 120 and it boasts a large number of shops and craftsmen.
Place Carnot is the central square of Carcassonne. Markets here every Tues, Thu and Sat mornings. Bistros serve drinks & food every day.
If you arrive by train with a rolling suitcase, you can walk the 1/2 mile to Maison Juliette.
Served by RyanAir, with flights from Brussels, London and many other UK airports. Also, the Toulouse airport is just 1 hr to the northwest.
Most popular pleasure waterway in Europe, this 17thC canal connects Mediterranean to Atlantic. Walk or cycle along the tree-shaded tow paths. Or take the 2.5 hr boat trip that departs opposite the train station with commentary in English.
Stroll along the riverfront walking paths, just 100 yds from the house.
Restaurant Le Magnac - a great casual restaurant with shaded patio. Just 1/2 mile walk from the house.
Le Restaurant Saint Jean, in the center of the medieval city.
Grocery store is just a half-mile walk. We provide a rolling shopping cart so you can do all your shopping on foot.
Evasion Deux Roues offers bicycle rental for just 15 euros/day or 75 euros/week.
Carcassonne has three public swimming pools, including this one right along the riverbank, which is 3/4 mile from Maison Juliette.
Owner's Map of Carcassonne
Maison Juliette is owned by two California couples: Eric and Jeannine and their good friends, Ian and Sue.
Eric grew up in Paris and always dreamed of owning a second home in the south of France. His wife Jeannine was easily convinced of the wisdom of this idea :-), and their enthusiasm soon infected their close friends, Sue & Ian.

This vintage home has character, charm, and excellent spaces to gather. Multiple living areas and bedrooms are spacious and well-appointed. Kitchen has every serving item and tool needed. Maison Juliette is truly a home, with warmth and convenience. We were greeted personally by a manager upon arrival. Geoff was personable, welcoming, and thorough in his overview of the home's amenities and requirements. The main drawback for some travelers would be stairs. It's a good climb (24 steps my sister-in-law counted) to the second floor bedrooms. Also, for people with limited walking ability, La Cite' and the central part of town are 25 and 15 minute walks, respectively. If you can manage the walking, Maison Juliette will be a memorable part of your stay in Carcassone.

We were 4 sisters traveling in Southern France and spent the week at Maison Juliette. It was a pure delight. The web page was very accurate to our experience. It was nicely appointed and clean. The bedrooms were enormous with lovely decor. Bathrooms were decadent. There was plenty dining and space to relax and spend time together after a day of sightseeing. The kitchen was well stocked and equipped On street parking was not a problem and we had a spot right in front of the house each evening. Jeaninne the owner was very responsive when we emailed questions

Maison Juliette was exactly as advertised; an elegant home in the center of Carcassonne. The kitchen has everything you need to cook, eat and drink. We made coq au vin one night and ate on the terrace with a full moon overhead. Spectacular. Bedrooms are large with fresh linens and comfy beds. It is an easy walk to the boulanergie for morning croissants. La Cite, the walled city, is also within walking distance. We rented bikes one day to go to the St. Hilaire Abbey, 18K from Carcassonne and a beautiful trip through the vineyards along the way. You cannot go wrong when you stay here.

My family absolutely adored the spacious home! It was a vacation in itself, in a safe part of town and near the citadel. We felt right at home and would definitely book it again if we come back to the area! Thanks to the owners and their attentive agent who made sure we had everything we needed upon arrival and throughout our stay!

My husband and I and our 26 year old son and his girlfriend spent a "magical" Christmas is Maison Juilette. The house is fit for a elegantly, causal occassion which is exactly what we wanted this Christmas. The listing is accurate to what you will discover, but I feel our discovery was more than expected. The property is very clean and very well maintained, Lesa, the property manager is a very nice and professional woman. She did some unasked grocery shopping for us when she found out our fight had been delayed, which was above and beyond. The walk to the walled city is lovely and the restaurants there are delicious. The Hotel de la Cite is a Michelin one star and it is welcoming and amazing. We had another delicious dinner at La Marquiere and they are extra friendly and such great food. We stopped in several taverns and bistros for wine and each one was great. We enjoyed the lighted ferris wheel on Christmas night which showed the walled city so beautifully lit. We rented a car and explored 4 Cathar Castles and along with the gorge and a wine tasting stop, made for a wonderful, easy exciting day trip of the area. Had our stay been longer we would have enjoyed cooking in the spacious and well layed out kitchen, We are gourmet cooks and our stove in the states was brought over by us from France, so we value kitchen space and this is a kitchen to make great dinners. I would love to return in the spring and summer to use the private and gorgeous outside garden space and visit the beaches. We travel the world and have experienced rental homes- Maison Juilette is outstanding,

We had an absolutely fantastic week in Carcassonne. The house was beautiful, the weather perfect and Carcassonne and the surrounding countryside were magical. We certainly hope to return for a holiday there again in the not too distant future. We have told a number of our friends about the house and many of them have looked at the web site and are keen to arrange a stay in your lovely house.

We thought your maison was amazing, the only problem being that we were only there a couple of nights. We have no complaints at all, and your Australian representative was a friendly and helpful – and for us a native voice in a sea of French!

As advertised, your house is in an excellent location. We would certainly recommend it to any future holidaymakers. The bakeries are superb, but we did find things a little expensive for eight people to eat out. This didn't however stop us from having a really good family holiday. May we also thank especially your housekeeper, Hassiba, as she was very happy and helpful. May we also mention that most nights we did play tennis, and once again the French people were extremely pleasant and helpful.
