We love this place!!! We have stayed there twice, and we have two more trips planned within the next few months. This is one of those places that's really hard to describe. There are really no words to describe the feeling you get when you are basking in the beauty of it all. I treasure the time spent in the hot tub on the deck while my husband barbecues. It couldn't be any closer to the ocean or you'd have to be in a boat. There is a panoramic view of the ocean, and there is a beautiful, sandy beach right in front of the cabin. There is a fully-equipped kitchen. There's a bedroom downstairs and a loft upstairs. It is so quiet and peaceful, but there's plenty to do. There is a nice restaurant right there, and there are many others nearby. The cabin is spotless and the hot tub is sparkly clean. Marcia is very friendly and helpful. We highly recommend this little oasis.Recommended for: People with disabilities, sightseeing, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: "You'd be on a boat if you were any closer" or "You feel like you're on a boat" are the best words to describe the sensation of the water coming up under you, whether you're sitting in our getaway or on the deck. We invite others to come share in the view, beauty and a peaceful retreat.

Wow! what a dream vacation. My wife & I have been "retreating" every Dec for 15 yrs in the Brookings area. We have passed these cabins & said "we'll have to ck them out some day". Well we did & have found our home away from home. Cozy cabin, full kitchen, hot tub +++ = Heaven. Marcia was very professional to deal with & we enjoyed the decor, one could tell right off this home is loved and well maintained. Ocean,Ocean,Ocean ! @ high tide we felt we were soaking in the tub on the stern of a luxury liner. Total satisfaction.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, age 55+.

This location is incredible...right on the water. It was such a blessing to wake up each morning with a view of the water and rocks below and fall asleep each night to the crashing of waves along the seashore. It was also great to be able to sit in the jacuzzi on the deck while looking out over the The owners had the place stocked well Pacific. Located just 0.5 miles from the Oregon border and about 15 miles north of Crescent City it is far enough away to allow you to feel "on vacation", but close enough to things which might be needed. We have already recommended this place to friends and if were to ever visit the area again we would stay here. Owners have the place pretty well stocked.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We just returned today from a long weekend at the Ancient Mariner. We liked it so much we called Marcia and booked another long weekend next month while we were still there! It was a good thing we did because I really did not want to put that key back in the lock box! Where to start? When we first walked in we were breathless. The ocean is right there! To get any closer you'd have to be in a boat. As far as you can look to the left and the right is a gorgeous beach. We saw whales and a cute, little otter scurrying around. The sun was shining, and it was calm and clear. The sunsets were gorgeous and we spent many hours in the sparkling clean hot tub on the back deck just marveling at the beauty of creation. The kitchen is fully-stocked with everything, even Tupperware for the picnics. There are nice, soft blanket throws to wrap up in for the evenings out on the large deck. There's a great gas barbecue grill on the deck. We tried to comprehend how amazing it was that we had finally found that special haven to return to again and again. The owners are very kind with great communication, and everything is spotless and comfortable. There are three TV's I think We didn't turn any of them on. We spent hours playing the board games. There were many nice videos, too, but we walked on the beach a lot and spent hours laughing and talking and playing on the beach. Often we were the only ones on the gorgeous beach. There are really no words to describe the majesty of this place. It's that place in your dreams that you thought wasn't real. It truly is a tranquil haven. We are very grateful to have finally found our special place in the sun.Recommended for: People with disabilities, sightseeing, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, age 55+.

Wow! While still on the road, Marcia called to inform us of a minor problem that they were already fixing, but slightly impacted our stay. She called back with updates and didn't try to hide anything - she really wanted it perfect for us - how many places have you stayed that EVER treated you like that?! WOW really is the first thing that came out of our mouths when we walked in! We already had high hopes as we have never seen reviews that are all so positive, you can never please everyone, but this place seems to do it. This stay was my husband, my 7 year old son and myself. The cabin is perfect for a smaller group, equipped with anything and everything you need except food and drink. Stocked kitchen, grill and everything you need on the deck including the hot tub, toiletries if you forgot any, board games, tv's, dvd/vhs players and movies, radios for music, etc. (Even candles!) We came prepared to end our long road trip with groceries and beverages, so no need to head right back out - except to the beach for the boy and the deck for the beautiful sunset. We ventured out both days, south to Crescent City and the aquarium - small but perfect and not crowded on a weekday, north to Gold Beach, Harris Beach and Brookings - all within approximately 30 minutes. It rained and hailed, but no need to let it stop your fun, we still hiked around and used the hot tub. We stayed 3 nights and by the time we returned home, there was a beautiful handwritten note including an apology and a lovely message to us for our anniversary (I mentionted this to Marcia when she called us). We see this as being our new annual vacation getaway spot! There is so much to do in the area and it is so beautiful we are already planning future trips. We can't thank Tim and Marcia enough for sharing this treasure with us!! WOW!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway.

I can't believe how amazing this place is... A stone throw away from the ocean, you can't get closer! The hot tub is awesome and the grill was nice, the view is breathtakingly beautiful! I can't wait to go back! The only sad part was leaving. Thank you for sharing your lil piece of paradiseRecommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway.

I would really like to write how horrible this place is - if only for the simple selfish reason that no one else will want to stay here! But, this place is nothing less than breath taking! The previous reviews are spot on, with literally 15 feet from the back deck to the crashing Pacific Ocean. Marcia was very gracious in answering questions (that were already listed somewhere else!) and very helpful with local markets, etc. We (4 adults) stayed 3 nights and could not have had a better time. We drove into Oregon one day for a short visit, but mostly remained close to home. We explored the beautiful probably mile-long beach (except for the cow that had washed up - yes, COW!) The sunsets were nothing short of a postcard and the house was fully equipped with everything we could have ever needed. Do yourself a favor, if you are looking for a quiet, romantic, out of the way place to go for a couple nights - rent this place. You will not be disappointed. We mostly cooked in house not venturing out much for local restaurants - and the house was perfectly stocked - a little looking and everything was found with no problem. The fireplace was a nice touch. Just a note about the upstairs - it is about 4 feet tall. Now, if a couple rents this place, they probably wouldn't even need to go upstairs. Once there, the beds were comfortable, nice breeze/sounds from the ocean. The stairs are nothing less than deadly (just know that in case you or anyone in your party have mobility issues) but can be manipulated with very slow, careful steps. Kids (teenagers) would LOVE this space!!! I can't stress how great this place is. I will definitely be back, and someone I know has already booked some time there. Thanks for everything!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Tim and Marcia's Ancient Mariner is an amazing coastal getaway. Situated on a short bluff overlooking the beach, and at the front of an arc of properties, the cabin has an unobstructed 180-degree view of the ocean. The deck features a hot tub (used it -- works great) with privacy guaranteed by a tall side wall. (The deck also holds a gas grill, though we didn't use it.) Moving inside, just off the deck is a small entry space with electric fireplace. We stayed from late November to early December and used the fireplace a lot, sometimes just for the ambiance. This entry space also has a rocking chair, plenty of coat hooks by the front door, and a box of current magazines. One step up from the entryway is a great room that includes living, dining, and kitchen spaces. The living room has very comfortable furniture (recliner, ottoman, and loveseat) and the western wall is all windows. The dining nook is sweet, backed by a cabinet with every bit of serving and tableware we could ask for. The kitchen is equally well-equipped, with fridge, dishwasher, gas range and oven, and plenty of pots and pans, utensils, coffee maker, hand mixer, and toaster (also a bread maker, which we didn't use). We love to cook and looked forward to making our meals at the cabin. The kitchen was perfect for the two of us, with one person working in the kitchen proper and the other working on the living room side of the open countertop. Down a short hall from the kitchen is the bathroom, which was perfectly clean, with a good hot water supply and thoughtful supply of emergency toiletries. Behind the bathroom is the master bedroom. It features a new king bed, large closet, and ceiling fan. Good blinds and curtains made for very restful sleep. Back in the hall, across from the bathroom, are the stairs to the loft bedroom. The stairs are steep, so I wouldn't recommend them for toddlers or folks with mobility issues, but this upstairs space is perfect for children. It holds two twin beds, TV, and books. The ceiling is low, but the top stair is made to help you adjust to the height of the room. There were only two of us on this trip, so we used this room only to browse the bookshelf. Within a 20-minute drive south/southeast, we hiked around several redwood groves in California. Gorgeous! Just to the north, across the Oregon state line, lie the twin towns of Harbor and Brookings. Here you'll find restaurants, groceries, laundry, library, etc. We loved Mattie's for breakfast (the French toRecommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, girls getaway, age 55+.

About the owner: We both grew up on the coast and enjoy the beautiful Pacific Ocean. We can hardly believe we now own a beach house of our own which we can share with others. The views are spectacular and the sunsets breathtaking--we always stop and watch the sunset.
Why the Owner Chose Smith River:
This site is so spectacular we were hooked as soon as we saw it! The cabin is so close to the ocean that everyone that visits is amazed at its proximity. The view from the living room and deck of the ocean are just special. The sound of the surf and the pounding waves on the rocks below make this very mesmerizing. In addition to the rocks and beach area in front of the cabin, there are miles of sandy beach to enjoy walks, beachcombing, tidepools to the north and south. So you have the best of ocean, surf, rocks and beach to enjoy.
