We just returned today from a long weekend at the Ancient Mariner. We liked it so much we called Marcia and booked another long weekend next month while we were still there! It was a good thing we did because I really did not want to put that key back in the lock box! Where to start? When we first walked in we were breathless. The ocean is right there! To get any closer you'd have to be in a boat. As far as you can look to the left and the right is a gorgeous beach. We saw whales and a cute, little otter scurrying around. The sun was shining, and it was calm and clear. The sunsets were gorgeous and we spent many hours in the sparkling clean hot tub on the back deck just marveling at the beauty of creation. The kitchen is fully-stocked with everything, even Tupperware for the picnics. There are nice, soft blanket throws to wrap up in for the evenings out on the large deck. There's a great gas barbecue grill on the deck. We tried to comprehend how amazing it was that we had finally found that special haven to return to again and again. The owners are very kind with great communication, and everything is spotless and comfortable. There are three TV's I think We didn't turn any of them on. We spent hours playing the board games. There were many nice videos, too, but we walked on the beach a lot and spent hours laughing and talking and playing on the beach. Often we were the only ones on the gorgeous beach. There are really no words to describe the majesty of this place. It's that place in your dreams that you thought wasn't real. It truly is a tranquil haven. We are very grateful to have finally found our special place in the sun.

Wow! While still on the road, Marcia called to inform us of a minor problem that they were already fixing, but slightly impacted our stay. She called back with updates and didn't try to hide anything - she really wanted it perfect for us - how many places have you stayed that EVER treated you like that?! WOW really is the first thing that came out of our mouths when we walked in! We already had high hopes as we have never seen reviews that are all so positive, you can never please everyone, but this place seems to do it. This stay was my husband, my 7 year old son and myself. The cabin is perfect for a smaller group, equipped with anything and everything you need except food and drink. Stocked kitchen, grill and everything you need on the deck including the hot tub, toiletries if you forgot any, board games, tv's, dvd/vhs players and movies, radios for music, etc. (Even candles!) We came prepared to end our long road trip with groceries and beverages, so no need to head right back out - except to the beach for the boy and the deck for the beautiful sunset. We ventured out both days, south to Crescent City and the aquarium - small but perfect and not crowded on a weekday, north to Gold Beach, Harris Beach and Brookings - all within approximately 30 minutes. It rained and hailed, but no need to let it stop your fun, we still hiked around and used the hot tub. We stayed 3 nights and by the time we returned home, there was a beautiful handwritten note including an apology and a lovely message to us for our anniversary (I mentionted this to Marcia when she called us). We see this as being our new annual vacation getaway spot! There is so much to do in the area and it is so beautiful we are already planning future trips. We can't thank Tim and Marcia enough for sharing this treasure with us!! WOW!

I can't believe how amazing this place is... A stone throw away from the ocean, you can't get closer! The hot tub is awesome and the grill was nice, the view is breathtakingly beautiful! I can't wait to go back! The only sad part was leaving. Thank you for sharing your lil piece of paradise

I would really like to write how horrible this place is - if only for the simple selfish reason that no one else will want to stay here! But, this place is nothing less than breath taking! The previous reviews are spot on, with literally 15 feet from the back deck to the crashing Pacific Ocean. Marcia was very gracious in answering questions (that were already listed somewhere else!) and very helpful with local markets, etc. We (4 adults) stayed 3 nights and could not have had a better time. We drove into Oregon one day for a short visit, but mostly remained close to home. We explored the beautiful probably mile-long beach (except for the cow that had washed up - yes, COW!) The sunsets were nothing short of a postcard and the house was fully equipped with everything we could have ever needed. Do yourself a favor, if you are looking for a quiet, romantic, out of the way place to go for a couple nights - rent this place. You will not be disappointed. We mostly cooked in house not venturing out much for local restaurants - and the house was perfectly stocked - a little looking and everything was found with no problem. The fireplace was a nice touch. Just a note about the upstairs - it is about 4 feet tall. Now, if a couple rents this place, they probably wouldn't even need to go upstairs. Once there, the beds were comfortable, nice breeze/sounds from the ocean. The stairs are nothing less than deadly (just know that in case you or anyone in your party have mobility issues) but can be manipulated with very slow, careful steps. Kids (teenagers) would LOVE this space!!! I can't stress how great this place is. I will definitely be back, and someone I know has already booked some time there. Thanks for everything!

Tim and Marcia's Ancient Mariner is an amazing coastal getaway. Situated on a short bluff overlooking the beach, and at the front of an arc of properties, the cabin has an unobstructed 180-degree view of the ocean. The deck features a hot tub (used it -- works great) with privacy guaranteed by a tall side wall. (The deck also holds a gas grill, though we didn't use it.) Moving inside, just off the deck is a small entry space with electric fireplace. We stayed from late November to early December and used the fireplace a lot, sometimes just for the ambiance. This entry space also has a rocking chair, plenty of coat hooks by the front door, and a box of current magazines. One step up from the entryway is a great room that includes living, dining, and kitchen spaces. The living room has very comfortable furniture (recliner, ottoman, and loveseat) and the western wall is all windows. The dining nook is sweet, backed by a cabinet with every bit of serving and tableware we could ask for. The kitchen is equally well-equipped, with fridge, dishwasher, gas range and oven, and plenty of pots and pans, utensils, coffee maker, hand mixer, and toaster (also a bread maker, which we didn't use). We love to cook and looked forward to making our meals at the cabin. The kitchen was perfect for the two of us, with one person working in the kitchen proper and the other working on the living room side of the open countertop. Down a short hall from the kitchen is the bathroom, which was perfectly clean, with a good hot water supply and thoughtful supply of emergency toiletries. Behind the bathroom is the master bedroom. It features a new king bed, large closet, and ceiling fan. Good blinds and curtains made for very restful sleep. Back in the hall, across from the bathroom, are the stairs to the loft bedroom. The stairs are steep, so I wouldn't recommend them for toddlers or folks with mobility issues, but this upstairs space is perfect for children. It holds two twin beds, TV, and books. The ceiling is low, but the top stair is made to help you adjust to the height of the room. There were only two of us on this trip, so we used this room only to browse the bookshelf. Within a 20-minute drive south/southeast, we hiked around several redwood groves in California. Gorgeous! Just to the north, across the Oregon state line, lie the twin towns of Harbor and Brookings. Here you'll find restaurants, groceries, laundry, library, etc. We loved Mattie's for breakfast (the French to

My husband and I just returned from our 3 day anniversary weekend stay at the Ancient Mariner. It was wonderful! The cabin was cozy, clean, and well appointed. Everything was just as the pictures had lead me to believe, and Marcia was very eager to make sure all of my questions were answered prior to our arrival. We didn't have any need to get in touch with them while we were there. The views were amazing. The advantage of going in the fall is that we got to experience the changing weather and its effect on the ocean and our view! We took tons of pictures. We even sat out in the hot tub while it was raining (with some creative umbrella positioning) and enjoyed the contrasting temperatures and the sounds of the waves. We ate a few meals in and enjoyed meals at the Onion Grill, Mattie's Pancake House, and the Hungry Clam just a few miles up the road in Brookings. We also treated ourselves to a nice meal at the Nautical Inn a few steps from our cabin. Harris Beach just outside of Brookings was another terrific place to walk and be amazed by the ocean. Just to be clear, the cabin is just above the beach, there is easy access via steps a few cabins down. Also, you might want to know that the loft has a very low ceiling. (Maybe 4 ft) My only very minor complaint is that there is no sign for the resort on 101, and the street sign is in a dark patch of the road making it a little tricky to find, especially if you get there after dark. Not much that Marcia or Tim can do about that though. I'd definitely recommend the Ancient Mariner to friends - and you!

My wife and I and our two teenage daughters thoroughly enjoyed our 5 day stay here! The beach and rocks right below the deck provided for some awesome sights and sounds. We loved our early morning exploring on the beach during the low tides. I thought the girls would be bored stiff, but they loved the place, the location and the activities we enjoyed in the area. It was the perfect location for exploring the Northern California coast, the Southern Oregon coast, and the nearby redwood forests. We enjoyed seeing the lighthouses up and down the coast and had a riot on a half-day jet boat ride on the Rouge River! We even enjoyed just lounging around on the deck above the ocean and laying on the beach. The house was stocked with a nice video library for evenings "at home", and the hot tub on the deck made for a relaxing time after a day of exploring and driving. We would love to go back to this place in a heart-beat and would recommend this rental to anyone.

We have always enjoyed our stay at the Ancient Mariner! We have stayed here many times and the Ancient Mariner is a favorite place to stay in the Brookings area. We have enjoyed anniversaries, birthdays, and other memorable occasions here. The owners are very nice and accomodating. When we come to the Ancient Mariner, we breathe the fresh air outside and inside and always know that the cabin will be exceptionally clean, which is important to us! The views are spectacular even when the weather is not the best! If you love the Oregon coast, you will love the view from the Ancient Mariner!

Once again, our annual girls summer getaway at the Ancient Mariner cabin was fantastic!! We extended our stay this year and were so glad that we did! The weather was beautiful, the view was unbelievable, and we left rested and re-charged! As usual, Tim and Marcia were available whenever we needed them (which was almost never) and they make sure the cabin is welcoming and comfortable. We cannot imagine vacationing anywhere else!!

We couldn't have asked for more! We had all the accomodations of home and a beautiful view too. I loved sleeping in the loft and falling asleep to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. Everything you read about the Ancient Mariner is true. It's beautiful, clean and the owner is just a phone call away if you should need anything. We've booked 7 days last year, 10 days this year....and we might even book 14 days next year! (It's that great!!!) I will continue to recommend the Ancient Mariner to friends.

Our hosts have all the bases covered. In the two weeks we were there not once did we have a need for something that wasn't provided. We spent hours on the deck or on the beach watching the surf and the birds. The pelicans provided great entertainment diving for fish or just cruising by in formation. Low tide was a good time to investigate the rocks for sea stars, barnacles, anemones, etc.. Belted Kingfishers had a nest along the cliff somewhere just below our deck. Watching them fish was amazing. The Ancient Mariner was our base for day trips to explore the many trails in the Redwood National and State Parks, Battery Point Lighthouse, the Wild and Scenic Smith River (beautiful), overlooks along the coast, The Oregon Caves N.M. and of course Brookings, Crescent City and Eureka. Just missed the peak time for the Azalea show at the park in Brookings. The communities and marinas of each town are worth a visit, esp. Old Town Eureka. The mural tour of Crescent City is worth a look. (Self Guided) It was such a wonderful experience discovering nature and all in such a unique and beautiful region and so nice to come home each evening to "our" beach house, the sunsets, the hot tub and a great king bed. We cooked in most of the time but did have a couple of good meals at the resturant next door. We learned to buy gas in Oregon and liquor in California. The Ancient Mariner is all that it is advertised to be and more once you've experienced it. Thank you Tim and Marcia for sharing , Peggy and Jim.
Owner response:Thanks for the excellent review of The Ancient Mariner cabin. We agree that it is a great spot for a "home base" to explore the area or just a place to relax and enjoy the spa, BBQ and the surf (sound and sight) at the cabin. This review is another great example of our guests enjoying the same experience we enjoy while staying at the Ancient Mariner. We hope you can work out a time to come and see for yourself! My sisters and I spent a wonderful week at this beautiful place.. It was really great. The description was just perfect and location was even better...this is our 2nd experience with Home Away and both have been exceptional. Sitting in the Spa listening to the ocean waves was just the medicene the Dr. ordered :-). We droove to Crescent City and shopped then to Brookings, both are just a few miles away for lots of interesting viewing or just walking around which is what we did. We have been telling all our friends and family about this little piece of heaven on the ocean.. Thank you so much Tim and Marcia for sharing it with us.. Sandy,Donna and Sophie.. 6/1/11
Owner response:Thanks for your review, and we are glad you enjoyed our cabin. We agree there is a lot to do in the area, from exploring the redwoods to walking the beach. Both nearby communities offer many opportunities to for things to do and places to eat and shop. We hope others will have the same chance to enjoy a soak in the spa tub with the waves crashing below! It is really a great experience. Having a BBQ on the deck while watching the ocean at the same time is hard to beat. Come and visit for the first time or make it a return trip!

Enjoyed a low-key New Year's Eve get-away with my youngest grandchild and his parents and hope to repeat the experience before the year's over. The cabin is comfortably outfitted and boasts an exceptionally well-supplied kitchen (bread maker no less.) Even though our stay started on the heels of another guest's visit, everything was clean and ready when we arrived. The deck is spacious and offers plenty of seating for the main event (as do the front rooms.) We were blessed with a break in the weather that allowed us to observe almost storm waves without the storm. My grandson wants to move there - I'd second that.

My husband and I did a lot of research before choosing the Ancient Mariner. Celebrating our 20th Wedding Anniversary meant a lot to us and we were looking for the most romantic, peaceful location - but still near civilization! The most important feature we were searching for was being as close to the ocean as possible - with awesome views. We received everything we hoped for in the Ancient Mariner. Not only is the location amazing, you feel like you are right at the breakers - from inside the cabin! We went tide pooling for hours and hours, all fat your footsteps from this beautifully kept and decorated cabin. We slept in every bed during our stay (felt like kids again upstairs!) and even with the windows open in November to listen to the ocean waves pound the cliffs at high-tide. We ate a remarkable meal next door at the Nautical Inn, all while watching the ocean, lit by outdoor flood lights, from our windowseat. This is the first time I was sad to leave a vacation spot, it was magical and we would love to return someday! The owners, Tim & Marcia, are wonderful people who went out of their way to make our anniversary special! Thank you Tim & Marcia!

This was the greatest :) My husband was recovering from open-heart surgery (April) and this was a great place to relax, reflect, recoup and enjoy the sound of the ocean and the view just outside our window. The place was well taken care of, it had everything we needed (we did cook a couple of meals there), the bed was sooooo comfortable, and we just enjoyed every minute. Marcia was great to work with and I would recommend this rental to my best friend. The photos on VRBO are good and the location was perfect -- far enough away from civilization for privacy, and close enough to good restaurants and beautiful coastal and forest scenery. The restaurant right next door was great, and they have a couple of musicians in on the weekend! We will be back next September :)

We stayed in the Ancient Mariner for a week late last August. My husband was recovering from open heart surgery (April) and this was a perfect place to relax, reflect, recoup and enjoy God's beautiful ocean and beach just outside our door! The place was immaculate, the owner great to work with and the location was far enough away from civilization to be "secluded" but close enough for good restaurants and beautiful coastal and forest drives. The photos on VRBO were great and I would recommend this to anyone who loves the ocean and privacy. Oh Yes, their bed is the best! I slept better than I had in months!!!

Wonderful location gives easy access to nearby towns and all the Redwoods/coast has to offer. Can't beat being right on the beach! The loft was great for our daughter (4) and we enjoyed running on the beach in the morning, spending our days in the Redwoods or up and down the coast and evenings lighting up the BBQ. Kitchen was well equipped and the cabin was nice and clean. Thanks again for allowing us to enjoy your property!

This was the perfect get-a-way for myself and my two friends. The cabin was immaculate and the owners were always available to answer our questions. We enjoyed dinner at the Italian Bistro in downtown Brookings. The view from the deck is absolutely spectacular. We hated to leave, and can't wait to return!!
Owner response:Thank you for the great review of the Ancient Mariner cabin. We work hard to keep the property clean and attractive for our renters. We can't claim responsibility for the view, God took care of that one for us! The cabin really is oceanfront so the view from inside or on the deck is spectacular. You can even enjoy it from the spa. We enjoyed this little cabin so much. The view is amazing. The walk to the beach is so short and there is even a very good restaurant right there! We enjoy cooking too and found the kitchen was well equipped, thank you! The place is very clean (which I can't appreciate enough), comfortable and private. Even though you are so close to other cabins, you feel like you are in your own little place on the sea! Thanks for taking care of your cabin so well and making available for everyone to enjoy!

This place is PERFECT!!! We stayed here for an entire week for our 15th wedding anniversary. The cabin itself is extremely clean and well taken care of. (And I am pretty picky about how clean things are.) You will find everything you need. It is so cozy and comfortable and relaxing. The couch and chair are super comfy, and the king size bed is so comfortable--you will love bedtime!! It was magical having the hot tub available at all times--we saw millions of stars on clear nights, and also enjoyed the rain and storms from the cozy hot tub. It is 100% true that you are RIGHT on the water!! And even with other cabins right next door--you have all the privacy you could want. There are MANY things to do nearby--Redwood forests, huge rivers, many beaches, etc. It was the perfect mix of having nice restaurants and stores nearby, and yet being "away from it all". We absolutely recommend this place!!! We will go again for sure--this time with our kids.
Owner response:We enjoy sharing our special ocean front "retreat" with others. SInce we often go and use it ourselves, we keep it like our own home. What a lovely time we had at the Ancient Mariner. What a wonderful surprise when the physical location is better than what the pictures showed. The bed was comfy! The view was incredible. Sitting in the hot tub, sipping a lovely glass of wine, listening to the waves crashing below. Nirvana!!! Came back to work and after telling my co-workers about my trip, ended up sharing this property info with 3 of them! Thank you for making our get-away perfect. Our stay at your wonderful cabin was the most relaxing event of our year. We were both recovering from the effects of Tom's auto wreck and needed to revive at the coast. The Ancient Mariner did the trick. Right on the beach, super clean and convenient. Short day trips were available to Redwoods, Rivers, Restaurants, etc. But we just stayed put, cooked in a clean well equipt kitchen, played cards, and videos and read. Listening to the oceans sounds, all the while, helped us relax and put smiles back on our hearts. Thanks for sharing with us.

What a wonderful place to stay!! Very clean and comfortable. Beautiful view of the Ocean. We went on morning walks on the beach, so peaceful and not crowded. We saw Sea Otters from the back deck. We had great fish and chips at the Hunger Clam and a great seafood dinner at the Snuggler. Other nights we BBQ on the deck. The description was just as shown on the website. I will recommend this to all my friends! I look forward to our next stay.
Owner response:We're happy to share our beach front retreat with others. It is ocean front and center--come enjoy! Tim & Marcia

We went to this quaint little cabin on the coast for our honeymoon. We enjoyed our time very much looking out at the beautiful beach. The cabin made us feel at home and very spacious, clean and private. What a wonderful place to start our new life together. We will have to return for one of our anniversaries.

Our family came here for an extended vacation. What a beautiful ocean view and quaint little cottage "home". Loved being separate from others and privacy. Kids loved walking/playing at the beach our favorite was looking at the stars at night in the hot tub. We will come back!

When we walked in the front door all we could say was “WOW!” what a view. The surf was crashing on the rocks right below the deck and the view out the picture windows was fantastic. The first night we spent part of the evening in the hot tub out on the deck enjoying the soak while listening to the ocean. What a relaxing way to put the week behind us! The next morning was just as spectacular, while coffee was brewing we watched the pelicans gliding along the surface of the ocean looking for their breakfast too. Very clean and well furnished throughout! Enjoyed the beach walks and tide pools at low tide. Worst part was having to leave but we plan to be back – thanks for sharing the Ancient Mariner cabin with us!

WOW, we so enjoyed staying at the Ancient Mariner cabin. It feels like home away from home, only better because the ocean view is endless. It was truly a relaxing retreat and cozy haven. The ocean is literally in your back door, my husband kept saying you can spit into the ocean from the deck. Isn't that just like a guy to say something like that? We will definitely be back, cuz we think your cabin is the best one of all. Blessings, Mary
