Are there still some adventurous, Huck Finn type sparks alive in you? Then turn up your Jurassic Big Island experience another notch by staying in this unique, hand-made, GENUINE treehouse built 20 ft. up into 5 living, native Hawaiian ohia trees.
Look down onto the reaching fronds of amazing hapu'us (giant tree ferns) from huge windows and lanais all around, providing 360-degree birds-eye views of this secure, private 4 acre paradise. Witness the thrills of nature's interactions while nestled in homey comforts, including full-kitchen and bath, TV/DVD, music and more to modernize your Swiss Family Robinson experience.
Fall asleep while star-viewing from your comfy bed perched high up in the spacious loft. Some nights, even the volcano's red glow is visible.
A real-deal treehouse... located between two active volcanic vents... in Hawaii... you might never want to leave! But Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the charming artist colony of Volcano Village are nearby if you do.
Huck Finn says: For the creative, environmentally sensitive types, not the fussy. This truly 'green' structure was intentionally built in the most non-invasive manner, using high grade building wood and reconditioned windows, doors, and most everything else (including the 'kitchen sink!') And after 6 years of testing by various forces of nature, it's structural integrity has been proven to be sound and solid. And the trees are happy, too.

We spent 2 nights in the treehouse. Very unique and enjoyable experience. The living trees in the house and all the reclaimed materials made the experience even better. Loved the surf board on top of the shower. We weren't lacking from anything - great coffee and coffee pot! We also loved Skye's art work, so much so we purchased two drawings. Wish we had more time to read the books and watch the videos - we were on the go! The place is away from everything but still close to Vnp.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Aloha Stacy, Thanks for the nice review, I really enjoyed meeting you both and I'm very happy you like my TreeHouse and my drawings. I love people who appreciate creativity and nature. You are now members of "I've slept in a TreeHouse" alumni, a very exclusive club. Thanks for taking a chance and coming to the Volcano and staying in the TreeHouse. Skye

Our family of four spent two nights at Skye’s Volcano treehouse in July 2012. Upon advice from Andrew Doughty in his essential guide book “Hawaii the Big Island Revealed”, we wanted to stay near Volcano National Park so we could go there at night to view the volcano if it was glowing or flowing. (lucky for us it was glowing, and spectacular!) When I saw the pictures of Skye’s Tree House I felt that staying in a beautiful handcrafted tree house in the rainforest near a volcano would add an experience to our Hawaiian vacation that would be well worth the expense, and I was correct! The house is amazing! It is truly a work of art. Skye created the house to live in, and when you stay there you really appreciate all the loving details. He has recycled and reclaimed as many materials as possible, and gave us a tour to explain when we arrived. Being up in the trees with all those windows is surreal! You wake up in the trees in a very comfortable bed surrounded by rainforest, still the tree house is very private. It would be fantastic for couples, but works well for a family as well. Love the throne room, and the kitchen has all you need to prepare simple meals. I encourage you to stock up on food (before you arrive at Volcano, if you don’t want to experience exploding prices!) so you can prepare breakfast (if not more meals) in the kitchen with a view and enjoy spending more time in the treehouse. It rained while we were there, and we were able to relax until past lunch one day enjoying Hawaiian coffee and reading about volcanos, local plants and tree houses in the books Skye has thoughtfully provided for his guests. I loved how all the drawer pulls, door handles, railings...the parts of a house you touch with your hands are made from tree branches. Staying in the house was an experience we won’t forget. Thank you Skye for sharing it with us.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

A dream come true! Skye's treehouse is a true gift to all who stay there. It has been built with loving care and we, the travellers, get to enjoy all of it. The bedding is wonderful and so cozy on the windy, wet nights that we truly enjoyed, snug and warm in our tree! Dishes, cutlery, cooking equipment, basic supplies, all provided, and really nice too. Skye was great to talk to, and has lots of local knowledge to share. We are in our late 60's and had no trouble negotiating any of the stairs. We loved the lanais which really enter you into the spirit of nature all around. If it's cool at night the fireplace is very effective and there is plenty of dry wood available. It makes for a lovely, cozy feeling. For those over 62 a National Park Pass means you can enter Volcano Park whenever you want without further payment and we took full advantage of this as it isn't far from the treehouse to the park. Do go to the Jagger Overlook at night as the view is unbelievable. The Kilauea Lodge has a fantastic restaurant and we had a very romantic meal there. We also had delicious crispy pizza at Kiawe Kitchen; both of these establishments are in Volcano Village. Basic picnic supplies are also available at the two small stores in the Village. Warning! At this time the Volcano House remains closed and so there is no food available inside the Park: even picnic places are few and far between. We would definitely recommend this lovely place to friends and family. Remember - it's different! This is not an ordinary hotel room and the peace and tranquility is truly special here.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

The pictures do not give this place the true beauty of it! This place can be fun for a family- however-- this is the perfect honeymoon getaway or a place to bring romance back into your marriage! You have stunning views from every room-- We had dinner in and sat at the table with the fireplace- wow couldn't have asked for a more intimate time. This place has everything you need away from home - one stop at the store to get food- you have everything to cook there! The back deck is a very romantic spot to look at the stars- the owner is very helpful and a very special spirit! I can tell you- you will not be disappointed in this place- only that you have to leave it- If we could move it to where we live and live in it full time WE WOULD! This is a must stay when on this side of the island- There is a great place to eat in this area as well. has great food for special dinners-- A memory you will cherish! Thanks for making our time very special- we have fallen totally in love again!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

We wanted something cozy and unique for our mini-honeymoon, and were looking for something in the rainforest since beaches weren't on our priority list. The house is cozy but has plenty of room, perfect for a couple looking for a romantic and off the beaten path place to stay. Super private, gorgeous location right in the trees and giant ferns. Windows and light from every direction. Multiple doors, windows, decks from every angle. Every morning we would wake up and wander out the kitchen onto the catwalk leading through the trees to the sky deck, where the sun would slowly nudge itself through the trees. We found it so hard to tear ourselves away every day to go explore the National Park (right around the corner 5 minute drive, very convenient for nighttime/evening visits) and would always look forward to returning so we could crack open a bottle of wine, light the fireplace, and just enjoy being in the treehouse. The attention to detail is amazing, there are so many lovely little surprises and touches that Skye has included. You really see that this house is a labor of love. The place is IMMACULATE - the wood smells so fresh and clean, there is no mold, mildew, bugs, anything. The house is well-stocked - even the kitchen items seem chosen with care, not the random assortment of cheap mismatched plates and glasses you find in most rentals. We loaded up on groceries from the Costco in Kona before driving over - definitely a good idea to stock up before you head to Volcano, since your options are rather limited in town. Breakfast supplies provided by Skye were great - we had fresh ground coffee, bagels with cream cheese, and eggs every morning. Skye is a wonderful host, interesting to talk to, and he will make sure you have whatever you need. Though he lives on the property in a separate house, there is no lack of privacy and you really feel as though you are alone in the forest. There are no neighbors or houses visible or within earshot, as you are just surrounded by trees and ferns. No Wifi or TV. We didn't miss it (though we are self-professed junkies). Plenty of DVDs to watch if you need entertainment, a nice selection of Hawaiian CDs, and so many great spots for reading. The only downside: beautiful weather all week long! We had hoped for some rain so that we could have a good excuse not to leave the house and just listen to the rain come down on the roof and the trees...Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

My companion and I LOVED this treehouse and the creativity and charming personality of Skye the creator of this masterpiece and your host. This is the most magical place I have ever stayed and will long remember our adventures in the treehouse. This place is a MUST for couples traveling to the Volcano Park. Location is perfect and there is simply no other lodging in town that can beat this place. So tranquil, romantic, interesting, and fun. Thanks Skye for a wonderful time!!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

My teen-aged boys and I unplugged for the weekend and decided to go back to nature in comfort by staying at Skye Petersen's enchanting and far-out treehouse. Located in a pristine Hawaii Island rainforest near the active volcanic vent (safely above it), the Treehouse embodies Skye's love of nature and his dedication to real sustainability...Other people may talk about green, but Skye lives it. And builds it. Proof is in the Treehouse itself. The structure is rock-solidly built on a foundation of five living 'ohia trees, yet embued with a warm and toasty vibe that will keep you safe, cozy and dry. Served by a self-sustaining water system, the Treehouse is outfitted with excellent, salvaged fixtures and items that add character and fun. Nothing goes unused here. Even the staircase railing is made of one of the trees' leftover branches. Large picture windows (also salvaged from high-end properties) frame breathtaking forest views. We loved the Treehouse! We fought over who got the loft bed (Mother won). In the morning, you can watch the sunlight quietly play over the hapu'u fern canopy in between light rainshowers. We took walks, stargazed, picked wild gardenias, went to the nearby Kilauea Military Camp for bowling and cheeseburgers and like, you know, talked! Connected! Without cell phones or texting and stuff. Wow. The Treehouse makes a great Road Trip getaway for those living on the Kona side, or an ideal home base for Island visitors who want to see the volcano or the East side. But warning: you may not want to leave the Treehouse once you arrive, so keenly does it remind of your connection to nature. As Skye says, "My relationship with the trees is symbiotic. I saved their lives by not cutting them down, and in return they gave me shelter." And what shelter it is. Tom Sawyer never had it so good. Highly recommend! *****Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

What a wonderful place. Skye has done a wonderful job with this house. He was so friendly and helpful when we arrive. The house itself is beautiful- nestled amongst countless trees and plants. Although it is somewhat remote, it's close enough to the main road so you can check out all the places in the area you like. This was our favorite place and have been recommending it non stop to our friends.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1
