i would just like to say that the total experience was relaxing from start to finish, the accommodation was clean, every thing was provided and every thing worked. The owner Mariah was very helpful. she would wash our sheets every few days and anything else we needed she was always there for us. We were close to everything and there was plenty to do if you wanted or nothing to do if you wished. With the grocery store being right next door it made it easy to chef up quality meals every night. The kitchen has everything you need to chef up a miracle. The house is very comfortable, had air conditioning and fans to keep the place cool. Wi Fi is available at the house which is nice. Very close to everything including restaurants, surf shops, grocery stores and of course the BEACH and the best surf breaks. Thanks again Mariah for making our stay so great! will definitely be back to the garden house one day and will recommend it to everyone!

We chose The Garden Houses (aka Serene Gardens) because of the rave reviews in VRBO. We are an active family of 4. We camp, surf, and look for adventurers. In this case, we experienced what I would call a ‘material lack of disclosure’ from the info provided on VRBO by the owner. Santa Teresa is an amazing, emerging and relatively remote destination so our expectations were pretty low when it came to accommodations. Still, we were pretty disappointed with The (Serene) Garden Houses from the start. CR is hot and humid to anyone coming from the US, Canada or any other western country. Only 1/3 of this house has AC in the connecting two bedrooms upstairs and the little AC wall unit could not adequately cool the 2 rooms to under 80 degrees until after 10pm or so. The other 2/3rds of the house including the bathroom, living room and kitchen have no AC. When you open the windows downstairs to get some relief you’ll find no screens. Bugs of all types, mosquitoes, frogs, lizards, roaches, crabs (yes, crabs through the front door) can and do enter the house at will. The kitchen had dusty plates, rusty pots and pans and the grill was a portable propane gas gizmo that was just worn-out. For what we paid I did not expect the house to feel this close to camping. Upon arrival, we discovered that the landlord was traveling in the US and left a friendly local in charge. We found that the AC did not work properly (dirty filter), the batteries for the safe where dead, and the electrical water pump failed on the second day. We had no water and no hope of a remedy so we left and found a wonderful hotel down the street for the remainder of our stay. This was a huge upgrade for not much more per night. See Nico at Orto Lado! So, in conclusion, if you want to stay at Serene Gardens make absolutely sure the owner addresses these issues. Despite having to spend half the day and into the evening finding new accommodations and moving all of our belongings, we received no consideration from the Owner for this mess which only added to my disappointment. It seems that the owner was more concerned about her own finances than my family’s welfare and situation. There are two rentals houses on this property; one near the main town’s thoroughfare and one in the middle where we stayed for a night. Most of the other amenities represented on VRBO are true regarding the central location, nice garden, easy walk to the beach with many services.

I have been coming back to Santa Teresa ever since I discovered it in 2009. I met the owner on my first trip but already had accommodations. She gave me a tour of the property and I immediately fell in love with the character and tranquility of the houses!! I decided to get her email and let her know the exact dates of my next return. Everything went smoothly with booking and deposit and shortly I arrived the following year very excited with anticipation. I was greeted by the owner with a warm happy "pura vida" greeting and she checked me in. The house and property were more then I could have asked for!! Fresh linens, A/C, full kitchen, huge fridge, hot water, comfy beds and a great patio!! The houses was just across the street from one of the best beached in town, walking distance to restaurants, grocery store all the conveniences you could ask for! And you don't even need a car which is a big bonus!! I would recommend this property to anyone. Families, a group of travelers, couples and even if you are traveling solo. It is very discrete but in a prime location that can't be beat!! My favorite spot in Santa by far!!

If your looking for a chill house in a great location the garden houses are the best bet and the prices cant be beat. In my opinion the Garden Houses are in the best location of all, the houses are on the main street literally next door to the supermarket. The Luz De Vida point break and Santa Teresa beach brake spots are both within 5 minutes of walking (the two best surf spots for miles) If you know the town of Santa Teresa, the garden houses are directly between Burger Rancho and Pizza Tomate (BeachBreak Hotel)

We stayed for 7 days during the month of November. To say that the location is ideal would be an understatement. The garden houses are a two minute short walk to some of the best surfing on the Nicoya Peninsula. Super Ronnies, the local supermarket is conveniently located at the end of the driveway to the property, however the restaurants within walking distance are to die for!!! The photos of the property do not do it justice. We stayed in the largest of the three garden houses and were very pleasantly surprised. The outdoor shower was amazing after walking through the muddy streets. We had a ton of privacy and the little children next door are absolutely adorable. The outdoor patio and hammock was wonderful for sipping on our fresh Costa Rican coffee and fruit smoothies. The two bedrooms upstairs are separated by a wooden swing door that closes and locks. We were awoken by Howler Monkeys outside the house and they stuck around for two full days directly above our heads in the trees. The free WIFI made it very easy to connect to the web to check email and the safebox made us feel secure with our personal belongings. This place truly is a perfect holiday in paradise, and it was really hard to leave!! We will be back!

I really enjoyed staying here! Mariah (owner/caretaker) was very nice and helpful. She went out of her way to make my stay easy, comfortable and relaxing. I enjoyed waking up to the sounds of tropical birds and monkeys--we even saw one on our walkway one day, which is apparently rare to see one down from the trees! The open-air patio was definitely a plus, as well as the outdoor shower (esp. after the beach when you're sandy!). There was even a tropical sort of bird who came for bread each day on the patio! I could make my own food (grocery stores all around, one even next door), or enjoy all the restaraunts around--everything is walkable (from pizza, to local food, to ice cream to burgers). I would recommend this place! The laundry service (right behind the property) was easy and wonderful when I needed to wash things!

I stayed here in June 2010 and it was great. The owner/keeper did everything to make us comfortable, and helped with everything we needed. There is a grocery store RIGHT next door, and eateries across the street. Easy access to beach--I didn't have a car, and everything was close enough to get to by walking! Plus, there are places to surf and take Spanish lessons and eat--tons of delicious food! Has an outdoor shower for after the beach (or just in general, if you like!) and hot water in the bathroom inside. Little stove to cook on, small fridge, sink, blender, etc. Patio is nice to have drinks/card games at, or eat lunch/dinner. There is even a laundry service right behind the property if you are here for extended stay--just drop off and they bring it back! Has Wifi and it never let me down!
