Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Frank and Vanita live in Aurora, Colorado, a suburb of Denver. Frank is retired from the Air Force, and Vanita from United Air Lines (First Officer, B-727). We have a mountain home in southern Colorado just east of the Spanish Peaks, and a Cessna 182 hangared at the Front Range Airport near DIA. We are very involved in area general aviation activities and organizations.

Why the Owner Chose Granada

We built a home in Costa Rica (Playa Potrero) and the later sold it and moved across the bay to Playa Flamingo (Guanacaste). We spent most of each year for 9 years n Costa Rica, but when we visited Granada, the oldest city of the Americas and a beautifully preserved colonial city, we fell in love with it. There are so many activities in and around Granada, and the fact that it is a walking city as opposed to living on the beach which required driving to anywhere. We bought our old colonial home in 2003, and it took a year to restore and modernize it. The roof was completely removed except for beams, all new plumbing, electricity, added a pool, gazebo, a second rear garden and balcony and new rooms in the rear, but yet kept intact the basic colonial structure. Beautiful cedro real doors and windows with rare caoba frames are original, as are all the taquezal walls, large post and beams supporting the roof, and two rooms have the original floor tile in designs no longer found. The house is in a quiet aea, secure, with large mansions nearby. It is 4 blocks to the Central Park, where it tends to be noisier.

The Unique Benefits of this Home

Within walking distance there are very nice restaurants and the Central Park. Also 5 blocks away is the new La Colonia supermarket which is stateside-quality. It is 20 minutes to the zip lines of Mombacho Volcano, 20 minutes to the nursery area of Catrina, ceramics town of San Juan del Oriente, and the mirador of Laguna de Apoyo, where resataurants and a wide vista overlook the volcanic laguna Apoyo and out to Granada, Lake Nicaragua, and beyond. Below is lakeside access to the Laguna de Apoyo, where small resorts offer swimming and boating. The Masaya Volcano National Park is about 25 minutes away, where one parks right at the rim of the smoking volcano. Not quite so far is the Masaya Artisans' Market. The Pacific Ocean is a bit more than an hour away, the ferry to Ometepe Island about an hour fifteen, Lake Nicaragua and the isletas a 10 minute taxi from Casa Gallo.
