THE SPRING HOUSE is an historically significant, beautifully restored Federal Cape. It was built in 1787 and is located in HEAD TIDE VILLAGE on the SHEEPSCOT RIVER in the town of Alna, Maine. The house is named because of a spring which flows directly under one section of the kitchen floor; COOL,FRESH SPRING WATER FLOWS FROM EVERY FAUCET IN THE HOUSE!
HEAD TIDE VILLAGE provides a rare glimpse of what a Maine village must have looked liked 200 years ago. The entire village is listed on the HISTORIC REGISTER. Of special note is that GENERAL GEORGE PATTON once owned and lived in the Spring House. THE SPRING HOUSE HAS BEEN FEATURED IN MANY NATIONAL MAGAZINES AND BOOKS. IT HAS BEEN FEATURED TWICE ON MARY EMMERLING'S TV SHOW ON THE HGTV CHANNEL. In 1991 the current owners completely renovated the house. While retaining the authenticity of the architecture and historical features, EQUAL EMPHASIS WAS PLACED ON HAVING THE HOUSE BE EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE, LIVEABLE AND COMFORTABLE.
Of special note are the three original exterior doors (very rare in an 18th century house), the very wide floorboards and the pumpkin pine paneling and kitchen pantry. The owners CENTRALLY AIR-CONDITIONED AND HEATED THE HOUSE, totally renovated the kitchen and bathrooms, and added a screened porch, all of which have greatly enhanced the enjoyment of the house. THE HOUSE IS LOVINGLY MAINTAINED. t consists of a living room, dining room, family room, kitchen, screen porch, 5 bedrooms (the master bedroom has a private bath and a built in pants press in the walk-in closet), 3.5 baths, plus a laundry area on the second floor with a washer, dryer, built in ironing board, iron, and an electric clothes steamer.
THE OWNER IS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER AND THE HOUSE IS TASTEFULLY DECORATED AND FURNISHED THROUGHOUT WITH A PLEASING MIX OF EARLY AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN ANTIQUES,(including many painted country pieces), ANTIQUE DETAILS, COUNTRY WHIMSY, FOLK ART AND EVERY IMAGINABLE COMFORT, including UPHOLSTERED SOFAS AND ARMCHAIRS. The large, fully furnished, GOURMET KITCHEN will please any cook. THERE IS AN OVERSIZED FIREPLACE WITH A BEEHIVE OVEN (no longer used for cooking and baking),a 10'X 3' GRANITE ISLAND WITH A DOUBLE SINK; ALL OTHER KITCHEN COUNTERS ARE SEALED BUTCHER BLOCK. A BEAUTIFUL 18TH CENTURY FRENCH WALNUT TRESTLE TABLE CAN SEAT TEN. It is furnished with a GAS 4-BURNER + GRIDDLE VIKING COOKTOP, DOUBLE 30" DACOR OVENS, A WARMING DRAWER (in the island for easy access!), A SUB-ZERO REFRIGERATOR AND A SEPARATE SUB-ZERO FREEZER, AN ASKA DISHWASHER, A SCOTSMAN ICE MAKER, A KITCHEN-AID TRASHMASHER, GE MICROWAVE, A COUNTER TOP KITCHEN-AID MIX MASTER, AN ELECTRIC BREAD MAKER, A CUISINAR ELECTRIC ICE CREAM/SORBET MACHINE, A TOASTER, A BLENDER AND A COFFEE MAKER. Pots, dishes, glasses, mugs et al are stored in open shelves/cubes. A PROFESSIONAL CHEF, who has cooked in the kitchen many times, has PRONOUNCED THE KITCHEN "PERFECTION"!!THE SPRING HOUSE IS 1 HOUR FROM THE PORTLAND AIRPORT AND IS EQUAL DISTANCE FROM THE LOVELY,QUAINT TOWNS OF WISCASSET AND DAMARISCOTTA.
It's away from the madding crowd, yet is within easy driving distance to BRUNSWICK, BATH, BOOTHBAY HARBOR, PEMEQUID POINT (the lighthouse on the Maine quarter and Maine's most visited and photographed lighthouse!), ROUND POND, NEW HARBOR, CHRISTMAS COVE, THOMASTON, CUSHING, FRIENDSHIP, TENANT'S HARBOR, CAMDEN, ROCKPORT, AND ROCKLAND. The GARDENS were begun in 1992 as a family project. The herb garden right outside the kitchen provides a wide variety of herbs for cooking. Daffodils, lily-of-the-valley, peonies, roses, poppies, violets, iris, columbine, pansies, foxglove, hollyhocks, clementis, geraniums, dianthus, campanulas, ladies mantle, coral bells, hydrangeas, astilbe, globe thistle, phlox, lillies, coneflowers, meadow rue, ferns, hostas and sweet woodruff are just some of the plants found in the cottage and woodland gardens.
Up on the hill, directly behind the house, the family converted the shingled chicken coop/2-seater outhouse into a CHARMING POTTING SHED, ALSO FEATURED IN SEVERAL NATIONAL MAGAZINES AND BOOKS AND ON MARY EMMERLING'S TV SHOW ON THE HGTV CHANNEL. Adjacent to the potting shed is a shaded, stone terrace which almost always has a breeze and the sounds of the water flowing past the house. There is an enchanting collection of bird houses both in the house and in the garden.
