Fantastic Location, Great Accomodations

Guest: Mountain Rambler (Colorado)
Date of Stay: 04/11/12 Review Submitted: 04/28/12

Our family of four, including 2 boys (12, 14), thoroughly enjoyed 10 nights here. The accommodations were very clean, well-stocked and comfortable. Our boys had no trouble sleeping on the futon. The kitchen, washer/dryer and wifi were particularly helpful to us. Also, because we took some day trips outside of the District, we had a car for the entire trip. Using the off-street parking associated with this unit was arguably the best decision we made when planning our trip! The owners were very responsive to our questions both before and during our stay. As far as nearby attractions, we had a lot of fun at the Eastern Market flea market on a Sunday, including a delicious lunch at the Market. We also frequented Starbucks right across the street from the Eastern Market metro station and Hello Cupcake on 8th street. Two notes: This is an excellent location, without question, but we usually ended up taking a cab back at the end of the day. After walking all day, we just couldn't fathom walking home from the metro stations. Also, being from a quiet, forest living in Colorado, the city noises were something we were not exactly prepared for. Ear plugs helped quite a bit. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it quite highly.

Great Location

Guest: Nicki C.
Date of Stay: 04/08/12 Review Submitted: 04/17/12

My family of 3 visited Washington D.C. for a mini vacation for our Spring Break. The location is convenient to most everything with an approximate 10 minute walk to the Metro at the Eastern Market. We arrived late Sunday evening and reserved a parking spot in back (recommended due to lack of available parking on street). Finding the parking space in back was a little challenging since there is no address numbers on the unit. Getting into the apartment was another challenge since the keys are not labeled and there are 2 different apartment doors in foyer after entering the main door of building. These are really minor issues, easily resolved. Other than that, the apartment was very nice and comfortable and provided everything we needed. My son slept on the futon which was very roomy and comfortable. We spent 3 nights here and would definitely come back!

Everything we needed!

Guest: Angie&Brian (Yakima, WA)
Date of Stay: 03/31/12 Review Submitted: 04/17/12

The location was great - nine block walk to the Capitol building, six block walk to metro, Eastern Market, and restaurants, and the neighborhood was homey. It was wonderful to see folks out walking their dogs, strolling with the baby, or going for a jog. Very safe. Bed was comfortable, shower had plenty of hot water, everything was clean, all amenities available (including wi-fi and cable). Stopped at Port City Java several mornings on the way to the Metro - great service and delish coffee. Box Car Tavern had a killer quesadilla with duck confit (no joke). I'm craving it now. Both are on 7th Street right across from Eastern Market. Last but not least, Kate was really helpful prior to arrival, prompt answering questions via email.

Fantastic Rental

Guest: Kevin A.
Date of Stay: 03/13/12 Review Submitted: 03/19/12

The one bedroom lower unit was great. It was clean, and roomy for my Dad and I to stay and even the fold down couch was comfortable. As for the location it couldn't of been better. Eastern Market was five blocks, and the Capital Building was just under a mile, all within walking distance. Got in the first night and walked the 15 minutes to Union Station at 10:30pm. The place is great and would stay again!

The apartment was well equipped, clean and pleasant. Location and neighborhood great. Our only negative comment would be that the bed was not as comfortable as we would have liked...but we are particular about beds! I would rent again and sleep on the futon in the living room. The owners have thought of everything possible to make one's stay enjoyable.

A great location

Guest: Chris & Scott (Alameda, CA)
Date of Stay: 04/25/11 Review Submitted: 05/14/11

The apt. is just as stated. Clean, comfortable and perfect as our final destination during our 23 day E Coast adventure. The kitchen was stocked and guests are encouraged to leave ingredients that the next guest could use. We so enjoyed our 5 night stay. The Capitol Mall is within walking distance. We started off taking cabs in the morning and quickly hopped onto the Open Top bus. We hopped off at a Whiskey Bar in Georgetown and enjoyed the Elephant & Castle for a late afternoon dinner on Pennsylvania Ave. Union Stations is loud for eating so we found a quiet pub in the post office across the street. It is moving to Union Station. There is so much to see. One of our favorites was the Library of Congress. Thank you for your hospitality .

Loved this Capitol Hill Condo

Guest: DC Lover (Oregon)
Date of Stay: 09/20/10 Review Submitted: 10/11/10

My husband and I spent a week in DC and stayed at this great condo in the Capitol Hill area. The convenience and walking options were just perfect for us and the nine-block walk to the Capitol area was enjoyable with all the historic buildings. Watch the uneven sidewalks, though! The apartment is very well-equipped and we liked that it has a living room separate from the bedroom with a table and couch for some evening relaxation after a day of sightseeing. The condo is well-stocked with essentials, in particular plenty of towels and hot water plus laundry facilities. We also read the guide-books the owners provided and found some things we hadn't been aware of when we arrived. The condo is also very clean and nicely decorated in relaxing colors. We did need to wear sweatshirts or sweaters due to the air conditioning being quite cold for us (we could not adjust it ourselves), but we did appreciate that it wasn't too hot inside after 98 degrees outside. Also, the neighbors in the building are very quiet, which was much-appreciated. Washington is a beautiful city and we loved every monument, museum, walk and tour. We really recommend the Newseum for an incredibly interesting museum experience, and with all the Smithsonians in addition it was easy to see treasure after treasure. Be sure to check out the Eastern Market, which is nearby. We had a fun Sunday brunch there and the market itself was better than average and even had some good music on a rainy morning. We will definitely rent this condo again when we are lucky enough to return to DC. Thanks to the owners from making this space a nice haven while touring our nation's amazing First City!!

Summer Touristing

Guest: Anonymous
Date of Stay: 07/29/10 Review Submitted: 08/06/10

Our family of four (two adults and children age 9 and 11) really appreciated our home away from home while visiting DC. Thank you. The location was fantastic for walking and using the Metro to see the monuments and museums around the National Mall. The tidy and thankfully air conditioned apartment was the perfect place to come home to after a hot day of touristing. Our kids got to unwind at the end of the day with a bit of cable tv and we enjoyed fixing our meals and sitting on the patio as it cooled down in the evening. Jarek's welcoming note and bottle of wine was a thoughtful touch to our arrival. Thanks again. Renee', Brad, Lily and Finn

Owner response:HI Renee - thank you for your nice feedback. We are very glad that you all enjoyed visiting the city and hope to see you back here soon. Jarek and Kate

We enjoyed our stay at your capitol hill apartment. Everything was exactly as you had advertised. The apartment was clean, and contained all the essentials for a very pleasant stay. Enjoyed being a part of the "Hill" neighborhood. The street was very quiet at night, and we appreciated Jarek's concern that all was well upon our arrival. Thanks!!

My wife and I spent one week here in May and very much enjoyed it. The unit was very clean, spacious and nicely furnished. We especially enjoyed the backyard and the grill that we used numerous times during our visit (there are local farms selling fresh meat and veggies at Eastern Market and we couldn't resist). We found the owners extremely helpful and great to deal with from the time of booking to departure from DC. We loved the neighborhood, the Eastern Market and the proximity to many restaurants, shops and so much of what we were hoping to see while visiting DC. We highly recommend this unit for anyone looking to explore this historic area .

6 Sleepless nights in Capitol Hill

Guest: DC Travelers (Long Beach, CA)
Date of Stay: 05/01/10 Review Submitted: 05/11/10

I did my research and knew going in to this rental that we were on the bottom floor, but I was assuming the owners were above us, and would realize that there were people below trying to get some rest after full days of sightseeing. Not so, what we had above us sounded like a bowling alley. Given the age of the building there was no soundproofing and it was really bad. Trucks and cars seemed to be flying by all night. We experienced an unusual heat wave and I guess the thermostat was in another unit. It was advertized as having air-conditioning which we were never able to find. In that humidity you really can't open doors and windows, there is no breeze. We had a somewhat broken ceiling fan in the livingroom. The place could use some upgrades. Shower was kind of dark and spidery. Furniture and the bed needs upkeep. On our last day, check out was 11:00. We had asked for a later time since our flight back to California had been rescheduled for 3:30 but they could not accomodate us, instead we had what we think was the cleaning lady looking in our window, knocking on our door at 9am and proceeded to wait outside until we leaft at 10:45, really strange. Just an OK rental, would not stay there again.

Owner response:Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your visit. We are however even more sad that while most of the issues could have been easily sorted out by a simple phone call, we have never heard about any of these issues during your visit. As to your points: Our A/C is centrally controlled and since you were visiting in April, it was not turned on for the season as April is normally the time when AC is needed. I am sorry to hear about your experience with noise. We are located in historic neighborhood with truck restriction (trucks are not allowed in to the area due to the proximity to Capitol Building) and speed limit of 25 MPH, which means except the trash trucks, no trucks come nowhere near our house. Our upstairs unit is also rented out and both are posted on VRBO. We understand that you might not be used to city noises as well as vertical living (people living above or below you), which is something that we people living in the city become very used to as time goes by. I do agree, that anyone staying on Capitol Hill, should be prepared for street noises, police and fire sirens and other noises, included the ones from neighbors as all buildings are attached and close together. As to the late check out, we let our guests know at the time of booking the check in and check out time. We also ask everyone for their arrival and departure information and ask everyone to let us know if they need early check in or late check out. That way, we can make arrangements in advance and accommodate your travel schedule. But again, we have never heard from you about needing late check out and once our cleaners show up, it is a little too late to let us know that you might need to stay longer, which is apparently what happened. Again, we appreciate your feedback and are sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your visit to DC. Jarek and Kate

We had a marvelous time in D. C. The location of the rental was perfect for us as we like to walk. However, the metro is close by when needed. The accomodations were comfortable. The best feeling was being part of a wonderful neighborhood. Best of all the hosts are helpful and provided great information regarding sights to see and local neighborhood information. We would not hesitate to recommend this rental to any of our friends and relatives.

It was very nice to be able to come back there at the end of a long site-seeing day in DC must recommend to those with families. Owners are very friendly and full of tips and ideas of what to do and see.

My husband and I took our 12 year old daughter for winter break to DC and we loved staying at this place. The unit was very clean, nicely furnished, comfortable and warm (very important as it was snowing outside and we enjoyed getting home that much more). The unit was very close to all the sights and we walked and walked all over the city. There are tons of restaurants to try out and Good Eats Burger place was our favorite. We visited this flea market which was pretty cool and ended up buying some photos to take home with us as souvenirs. If you walk out of the front door and walk to the end of the street, you will see the Capitol building which is about five minutes away and being able to walk to everything was just what we were looking for (we don’t do that down in Charlotte a lot)The area was very nice and the people we met were always very helpful. We have really enjoyed this place and it has exceeded our expectation. This was the first time renting through VRBO and we definitely got our money worth and we had once in a lifetime vacation with our daughter

I love the way you decorated the place, and I really enjoyed the bottle of red wine you left for me. Thanks for doing that! How sweet of you to open up your beautiful home to visitors. I will definitely have to come back, and hopefully bring my girlfriend with me next time.

Instead of crowding our small apartment with out-of-town in-laws, we used this condo as our guesthouse and our in-laws absolutely loved it. The place is so nice and the location so convenient to everything the Hill has to offer (and we know, because we live here), that we ended up inviting ourselves to "their" house more often than coming to our house! Thank you so much for offering this wonderful solution to the perennial problem of where to house guests. We will never do it any other way.

My husband and I stayed at this lovely rowhouse Election Week of 08. As others have noted in this guestbook, the location is absolutely perfect for exploring the traditional sights of DC. We walked a different route back and forth to the Metro each day so as to enjoy the architecture of the varied rowhouses. Our "apartment" was stocked with everything we needed including laundry soap, dryer towels, paper towels, plenty of fluffy bath towels, etc. We didn't have to pick up a thing at the store to make us comfortable. We especially appreciated the complimentary bottle of wine waiting for us on the kitchen table after a long day of travel! Furthermore, the cushy comforter on the bed and the large, beautifully tiled shower were welcome amenities after days of sight-seeing. Two suggestions for future visitors: Don't miss the FDR monument. And one day take the Metro to Dupont Circle around 4:45, have a seat at an outdoor cafe with a glass of wine and an appetizer and enjoy watching the hordes of workers stream out of the Metro on their way home! Very relaxing.

Okay, it's taken me 2 years to write this review, sorry. We are about to book another VRBO property and it reminded me of our DC trip. First of all - I had a million questions about the home, area, amenities, etc. Jarek and Kate were patient, informative, flexible and lovely to deal with. This property was ideal for us, we traveled with 2 kids. It was centrally located, lots to do in the area, safe and had all the items needed for a comfortable stay for one busy traveling family. We would definitely stay at this property again. Thanks so much!
