EN LA MARRE
EN LA MARRE is an early 19th century farmhouse and barns, set amidst forests, meadows, lakes and streams in a truly tranquil rural location, the perfect environment in which to escape the hustle, bustle and stresses of modern-day life, a place to unwind, relax and "chill out". The property was originally part of the large estate of the Chateau de Dracy, owned for generations by the noble de Charette family which had the fortune to escape the fate of so many other aristocrats at the time of the French Revolution thanks to the pleas of the villagers to release them from prison. The estate land adjoining the property is farmland where Charolais cattle are raised, with wild flowers and wildlife in abundance, a dream for nature-lovers, particularly birdwatchers, where over 50 different species have been spotted at the property alone.
We, Chris and Judith Mosedale, bought EN LA MARRE from the de Charettes in 1987 and spent the next 10 years transforming the property. LE PIGEONNIER is one of SIX SELF-CONTAINED, SELF-CATERING APARTMENTS FOR COUPLES ONLY, and our own residence, lovingly created by us from the derelict old buildings retaining the stone walls, tiled roofs, and massive oak beams which give the property such character, ideal for couples seeking independence with an extra touch of comfort. The buildings are set around a pretty flower-filled courtyard and a swimming pool, with open views over the rolling countryside. Within the courtyard is a well-stocked herb garden which guests are invited to make use of for their culinary creations.
On arrival at EN LA MARRE for your holiday you are welcomed by us with a drink and an opportunity to meet the other guests. Once a week we hold a communal BBQ where everyone wishing to partake contributes food and wine and a jolly time is had by all.
LE PIGEONNIER
Full of character, this apartment was converted from the former stable and pigeonnier, and faces the farmhouse and courtyard. The living/dining room is an unusual round room, attractively furnished, with French doors opening onto the patio and a small garden. The brand new kitchen with flagstone floor and exposed wooden beams overlooks the swimming pool.
Upstairs the pretty newly-installed bathroom has a bath, separate walk-in shower, vanity unit and WC. The adjoining bedroom in the round tower is a romantic, bright room with painted wood-panelled walls and ceiling and an antique tiled floor; it offers lovely views over the countryside.

THE REGION
Burgundy is a beautiful, varied region of rolling hills, forests, lakes, rivers and canals, and pretty flower-bedecked villages, but its most obvious attraction is its vineyards. EN LA MARRE is ideally situated for excursions to the Côte d'Or, to visit the famous wine villages of Meursault, Pommard, Nuits St Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, as well as the Beaujolais area (Fleurie, Julienas, Pouilly-Fuisse, and many more),just south of Macon.
WINE AND FOOD
For those interested in tasting and buying wines, we are both great wine lovers, and having lived in Burgundy for 20 years have many vigneron friends and can help and advise. Every Tuesday, numbers permitting, we can arrange an accompanied visit to our friends Michel and Denise Isaie in a village near Mercurey who have a range of excellent wines at very reasonable prices from the Cote Chalonnaise to 1'er cru Mercurey, as well as the local "champagne", cremant de Bourgogne, which Michel makes the traditional way, turning the bottles daily by hand, rather than passing the work over to cremant factories which many other vignerons do.
The evening is completed by a wonderful but inexpensive buffet meal at "LA TOUR BAJOLE" in Couches, run by friends Daniel and Marianne Boisson and just 3 kms from EN LA MARRE. Other vigneron friends on the Cote d'Or where visits can be arranged are for example Michel Prunier and his daughter Estelle (who speaks English) in Auxey-Duresses, and for very serious wine connoisseurs, Francois d'Allaines at Demigny near Meursault,(also speaks fluent English), who buys in top-quality grapes to make the very best Meursaults, Puligny-Montrachets, Pommards, etc.
Burgundy is well known for its rich cuisine, using red wine in its sauces, combined with the robust Charollais beef to make "boeuf bourguignon", or "oeufs en meurette" (eggs poached in red wine sauce with bacon), for example. Other local specialities are "jambon persille" (parsley-flavourd ham), "pochouse" (river fish poached in white wine, butter, garlic and onions,a speciality of the Doubs region), and of course, "escargots" (snails) served in various ways. We are spoilt for choice of cheeses, from the mild and creamy (St. Florentin, Chaource) to the strong and smelly (Epoisses, matured in marc de Bourgogne) and hard and tasty (Comte, from the Jura), as well as many types of goats' cheeses.
There is a good choice of restaurants within easy access to EN LA MARRE - "LA TOUR BAJOLE" in Couches (4 km),already mentioned, an impressive medieval building where Daniel produces beautifully -cooked Burgundian fare and the elegant Marianne presides with great charm; "LE VENDANGEROT" in Rully (10 km)- busy, friendly and very popular with the locals where Armand Lollini also produces excellent burgundian food but with a lighter touch and his homely wife Marie Laurence smoothly runs front of house, advising on wine choices and keeping the jolly, cheeky waiters under control; among the Michelin* restaurants in the area, "LE JARDIN DES REMPARTS" in Beaune run by chef Roland Chanliaud and his wife Emmanuelle takes a lot of beating for imaginative, exquisite food.
