Watch the world go by in the quiet, pristine beauty of the Awakening Place
Location: Fort Davis, Big Bend Country, Texas, USA (El Paso West 225 Miles, or Midland East 190 Miles)
Accommodations: Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)
The Awakening Place cabin is light and airy, with knotty pine walls, ceilings and wood floors. The living room, with 3 plate glass windows overlooks Fort Davis National Historic Site, a restored military fort circa 1880, framed by Palisade mountains and old cottonwood trees.
The cabin is located a brisk walk to most attractions and easy driving to all places of interest. The spacious Awakening Place grounds provide privacy and solitude, even though it is located on our main highway 118 & 17. It is an easy location to find.
The remote town of Fort Davis is one of the few remaining western frontier settlements with dirt roads, old buildings, no crime and an abundance of real cowboys. The environment is pristine, scenery is mountainous, star-filled night skies overwhelm the senses. There are no shopping malls. Each business is unique, offering services and goods with a flare of our western ranching lifestyle.
Hiking in four different prestigious public areas offers an opportunity to commune with nature on an unprecedented level. Public programs at McDonald Observatory provide the privilege of casual learning about the heavens, under the watchful eye and vast expertise of trained astronomers.
Roam the grounds of one of the best restored frontier forts as history comes alive for you at Fort Davis National Historic Site. Indian lodge, a pueblo dwelling, in the Davis Mountains State Park is well worth the time to investigate. Eat lunch at their Black Bear Restaurant, then enjoy the eminent beauty from Sky Line Drive.
The tri-county area abounds in excellent restaurants which can meet the demands of the most discerning palate.
The local grocery store is more than adequate to supply your vacation needs. 3 excellent area healthfood stores fill other gaps.
We even have an ATM machine at the Fort Davis State Bank and 2 24-hour gasoline locations. When in the mountains, your cell phone probably will not connect to service. While in the area towns, your cell phone should work very well.
Each business is owned and operated by local folks. Please, respect their personal lives and schedules. At night, locals go home. There is little public entertainment after dark. We make our own. Come try your hand at doing so.
All Texas land is privately owned and cannot be entered without the rancher's permission. Driving on the highways which traverse these ranches, stopping for a picnic at the numerous roadside parks, taking pictures or bird watching is certainly the thing to do. A drive along the scenic loop highway 118 north in Jeff Davis County is an incredible visual experience.
