With a population of 45,000 citizens, Progreso has all the amenities of a large city including bank machines, grocery stores, laundries, movie theaters, 24-hour pharmacies, and coffee shops with Cappuchino. There are Internet cafes, real estate offices, and the market is well stocked with fresh fruits and veggies, meat, and seafood. There is even a subsidiary of Wal-Mart called "Bodega" which carries familiar American goods. Progreso is an affordable and more relaxing alternative to the expensive resort areas of Cancun and the Mayan Riviera. Locals are friendly and accommodating. It is also safe with very little crime.
Our property is located only one block from Progreso's malecon which is a twelve-block boardwalk which borders the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Wonderful restaurants and beachside bars are within strolling distance.
Historical Merida is a 15 minute car ride away. Here you will find museums, beautiful architecture, and free cultural entertainment. It's nicknamed "The White City" because it is so clean. It also offers traditional Mexican and American-type shopping (Home Depot, Costco, Sears, Sam's Club, etc.)
There are numerous opportunities for sightseeing in the area including Mayan ruins: Chitzen Itza, Dzibilchaltun, Xcambo, Coba, Uxmal,etc., A flamingo reserve at Celestun, cave tours, and cenotes for snorkeling and diving. The area is served by affordable, convenient, and safe public transportation. A golf course is located minutes away.
