In the gated Mokuleia Beach Colony, there are 26 charming duplex cottages. Only five actually face the ocean. This is one of them.
You’ll wake to the sound of waves, sit on your open lanai and see nothing but aquamarine water and morning sky. Not a few steps away. Right there.
It’s a stunning view of a beach that stretches for miles in either direction for swimming, walking and snorkeling in the coral reef. You rarely see anyone. Warm water, day and night.
Our bungalow is as it was designed in the 1960s. It’s been decorated by a Hawaiian-born artist, whose paintings of the Mokuleia ocean, sky and landscape hang on the walls. A gallery perfectly at home with the Aloha furniture, Lauhala mats, vintage Hawaiian prints and other island details. Plus, you have all the modern conveniences: WiFi, cable TV, DVD, new fridge, new stove, microwave, dishwasher, etc.
Twelve minutes down a country road is the famous surfing town of Haleiwa. Shop for clothes, local art, shaved ice and fresh fish, steaks and produce for barbecuing on the lanai. Or enjoy one of its many restaurants.
The Colony has a beautiful guest-only pool and five minutes up the road towards Ka’ena Point, there’s kite surfing and skydiving. The Point is where the road ends. No through-traffic here.
Sleeps four. One bathroom with tub/shower. Separate vanity. Outdoor shower for sand. Iron-and-glass table on lanai for meals, cocktails and enjoying books, board games and cards. And, of course, for the magnificent view.
(Colony flora: coconut palms, plumeria trees, beach heliotrope, spider lilies, hibiscus, three types of ginger, croton, tiari gardenia, lawai fern, sea grapes, ti leaves, naupaka kahakai, rolling mondo grass. Fauna: Zebra doves, cardinals, mynah birds, monk seals, sea turtles.)

This studio-sized house (technically it’s half of a duplex, but we never heard or saw the neighbors) is right there at the ocean. The waves break on a small beach below a seawall which is just a few feet away from the front of the house. A few steps along the lawn gives you access to a thin but very long sand beach. We rented this house because we like the sound of the waves, and we really got them! The waves are small (because an offshore reef subdues them) but they sound surprisingly loud, especially at night. Very restful. The grounds are quite nice, with plenty of flowering trees. The development is in a very uncrowded part of Oahu. There were never any traffic jams in this section. The main downside was a cleanliness issue with the floor. After walking on it barefoot for about twenty minutes, the soles of our feet would be black. This may have something to do with the house being so close to the ocean, with a nearly constant breeze. the rest of the house was also not nearly as clean or new as it looks on the photos, but not awful either.Recommended for: Sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for taking the time to stay and to write your review, which is very helpful. We can't take credit for the restful sound of the waves, but we will take responsibility for the floor issue. It may or may not be due to the nearness of the ocean, as you kindly put it. Regardless, have sent a note to our managers, since anything less than ideal isn't really good enough. Hope to have you stay again.

We stayed in this cottage for the whole month of Feb 2011. This unit is badly in need of updating but he location makes up for its deficiencies. Waking up and going to sleep to the sound of the ocean waves was wonderful. The unit is great for a couple and has room for a couple kids but not great for young one as outside the retaining wall has a 7foot drop to the beach which could be a bit scary. It is not really private enough for two couples. Our stay was very enjoyable would choose this unit again.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Thanks for your review. You'll be happy to know the cottage has been updated with all new furniture and other amenities. As far as waking up to the sound of the ocean waves - we left that alone.
