Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2006

I'm a home & garden designer. I love to cook and enjoy the solitude of nature.

Why the Owner Chose Blowing Rock

I have been coming to the mountains all my life and when I finally had the opportunity to buy a place, my Realtor showed me several properties and he said, I know which one you're going to buy...and he was right! When I found it, it was just a tiny fishin' shack of a few cut-up rooms, ,no porch and no fire place, but the location and the tranquility of the place was infectious. Being an interior designer, I immediately saw the possibilities and began 9 months of renovation. It's still small and cozy but now it has a warm hearth and a sweeping porch that I practically live on in the Summer. And because I love to cook, the small kitchen is very well well equipped and easy to clean.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

The best thing, besides the simple charm of the cottage itself, is the fact that it's within minutes to Boone, Blowing Rock or Banner Elk, yet you are in the middle of the woods overlooking Cone Forest. One of my favorite things is to wake up early, make a pot of coffee and sit on the porch listening to the sounds of the mountains waking up or stay up late during a full moon and listen to the Owls talk to each other. It really is an amazing place.

Great Getaway in the NC Mountains

Guest: Family of 3 (Winston-Salem)
Date of Stay: 11/04/10 Review Submitted: 11/10/10

Me, my husband and 6 month old daughter just spent the weekend at the Brown Recluse. It was the perfect place for the three of us. We made ourselves right at home, which was easy to do with all the amenities provided. It is beautifully designed and decorated, yet it's quite comfortable. It snowed the second night we were there and we sat by the fireplace and enjoyed ourselves. Every detail has been thought about, down to the aspirin in the medicine cabinet. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a private place to stay, but yet wants to be close to Blowing Rock and Boone.

Owner response:It's so gratifying to have so many people love my place! When I bought the house it was really sort of a dump; no fire place, no porch, tiny windows, etc. I'm a designer so I ripped it apart and moved things around, opened up the space and put in the 2 things every Mt. house MUST have, a big porch and a fire place! The place is tiny but it's precious and I keep hearing that over and over again. It is definately not a Moose, Bear, Trout decor! LOL! I hope you will enjoy it too one day. Cheers! Gene

Charming cottage, great location and idyllic surroundings

Guest: Family of Four (Chapel Hill, NC)
Date of Stay: 10/23/10 Review Submitted: 10/27/10

We have just returned with our family of four from a wonderful stay at the Brown Recluse. The cottage is wonderful with many additional welcoming touches and beautiful interior and porch area. Located within a few minutes of Blowing Rock and the Parkway but secluded and well maintained. The owner was very friendly and helpful. We stay every year in and around the Blowing Rock area and this was far and away our favorite. Cozy fireplace, exceptionally well appointed kitchen, internet, comfortable beds, grill and very clean. I would have no hesitation in recommending it.

This cottage was very cozy and well-appointed. We had everything we needed for our short stay, and the location is quite close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Blowing Rock. The owner was always pleasant and quick to respond to questions. I would recommend this cottage for a couple or one family.

Brown Recluse

Guest: Deb & Bob (Ocala, Florida)
Date of Stay: 08/08/10 Review Submitted: 09/13/10

We spent almost the entire month of August at the Brown Recluse since we were looking for some relief from the Florida heat. Had never been in the area previously, so we were very pleased with the house. Very accessible location to town as well as to Blue Ridge Parkway. Loved the deck, well-equipped kitchen, and laundry. Very quiet location, great for those who appreciate nature. Owner is very accommodating and his designer touches were appreciated. Would like to stay again some time in the future. Definitely recommend it.

My husband, teenage daughter and I just spent a marvelous long weekend at this lovely cabin. It is beautifully decorated (it is evident that the owner is a design professional) with a terrific deck and cozy fireplace that make a stay truly enjoyable in any weather. The kitchen is stocked with anything you might conceivably need and the beds are so comfortable we felt we were sleeping on clouds. The location could not be more perfect. Within minutes you can be in Blowing Rock, Boone, Valle Crucis and the Blue Ridge Parkway, while staying in a secluded little woodland paradise. There is enough shopping, dining, great hiking and mountains walks nearby to please all ages. But frankly, staying home and enjoying this little gem is just as tempting. We have been renting in and around Blowing Rock for the past 12 years and this is-- by far--our favorite place. We never left a cabin with more regret, and we can’t wait to return. The only thing wrong with this place is that it’s not ours!

MY DAUGHTER AND I STAYED IN THIS COTTAGE DURING FAMILY WEEKEND AT ASU. THE COTTAGE WAS SO INVITING, WARM AND COZY. WHILE IT RAINED THE ENTIRE WEEKEND,WE MADE SOUP AND CURLED UP TO A WEEKEND OF RELAXATION AND COMFORT. I HAVE STAYED IN SEVERAL CABINS IN THE AREA AND ENJOYED THE BROWN RECLUSE THE MOST. WILL RETURN SOON.

Our stay at the Brown Recluse was one of the most wonderful relaxing times we've ever had! The cottage is small and very cozy with a fire going. When it was warm during the day we loved opening up the Dutch door to the large covered porch and let in the fresh air. It's very private. The house is beautifully appointed. It's obvious that the owner is an interior designer with all of his little touches, just charming. And those beds! I've never slept so well in my life! Thanks for letting us stay there. We will be back! Thank you.
