Last week I visited Taos with a large group of friends and we needed the space of Compound at Stargazer. When we arrived, we were delighted. In the past, I had stayed at Desert Oak, Linda's traditional adobe in the historic district. The Compound was very well equipped for our group of 16 and it was a great place to return home to after daily jaunts around Taos. We found it spotless and well appointed, in an ecclectic mix of Taos funk and charm. It was so convenient and had great views of the mountains. At night, we dined under the stars, with seating for all, around a marble table. Conveniently there was a 6 burner gas grill right there. After dinners we sat around the campfire and counted shooting stars. We had a running Pool tournament during the week and relaxing in the hot tub was always a delight. When we arrived we were greeted with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, along with a bottle of wine, chips and salsa at each of the two homes. Linda's extensive website and photos were clear, accurate and very helpful. But most important was her attentiveness to us. She answered many questions, as only a local can, before our arrival and then checked in with us during our stay. She joined us for dinner one evening...I felt I was returning to visit an old friend. I can't wait to return. Fall in the mountains was spectacular.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The compound was perfect for our large group in mid-August, 2012. The website and the owner were very helpful and clear about what to expect, and we were not disappointed. We loved our big comfortable communal dinner gatherings in the houses and spent lots of time outside enjoying the views of the mountains, the fire, the hot tub and the stars. In addition, the owner, Linda, was very attentive and made many thoughtful suggestions about things to do and see in the area to make our visit the wonderful experience it was. This was my second stay the Coumpound at Stargazer, and I look forward to my third.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Our group of 15 seniors have been re-unioning every other year since 1996. This year we came to Stargazer to commune with the Sangre de Cristos, adobe, and the spectacular night skies. We gathered from far flung places: Maryland, Michigan, Vermont, Oregon, New Zealand, Hawaii, California, Georgia, Texas, and Colorado. Stargazer was the perfect home(s) for us and we appreciate the attention to detail Linda provided. Having fueled the northern New Mexico economy, we are leaving with fond memories and no regrets. Stargazer will always be remembered in our group...Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The following is a list of issues (with photos) that I sent to the owner of this property following our girlfriends getaway to Taos in July 2012. Her first response included a small (compared to what we paid) "good will check, with the understanding by everyone involved that this matter is satisfied and over." I declined and asked for a refund of one night stay (out of four) for each of the guests (8) and I was immediately dismissed and the "good will" refund was rescinded. The images that were formed based on photos and descriptions on her website and VRBO are very different than the reality of the condition of the property. * VRBO states "Two Private Homes Side by Side" when actually there are 3 homes that share a property. They are not private. Homes B and C (not rented) share a front lawn. The Site Plan on your website is not accurate at all. (NOTE: immediately following this concern the website site plan included a note that "the site plan is being revised") * VRBO also states that there is a Gazebo and your site plan shows a covered pergola... neither existed. * The "spectacular" and "expansive" views from all directions include a large dirt pile, a home with numerous rundown cars in front, a backyard with blue tarps covering who knows what, knocked over garbage cans, fencing, power lines, a highway, a dog house / play house with garbage inside and construction material leaning on it and a bright silver Air Stream trailer. * The firewood was not covered and was wet * There are 4 cheap plastic chairs outside. TOTAL. No table or chairs on any of the decks. * The "private hot tub" is not private (see above) * The bathrooms had one roll of toilet paper and no extras. There were also no extra garbage bags. Both of which we had to purchase. * There is no privacy glass or shade in the 2nd bathroom (House A) and part of the fence is missing in the yard that is in between the bathroom and the highway, thus giving people driving by a pretty good show. * The grill is filthy. * The larger beds in home A are sitting on the floor and there is construction material leaning against the wall in the room with twin beds. * The backyard security system is wire wrapped around the french door handles which does not hold the doors shut. None of the french doors locked properly and they can be opened/ closed from both sides by pulling / pushing on the handles We spent NO time outside relaxing at this property due to the conditions. It's a shame, NM is beautiful.Owner response: I am truly sorry that you were disappointed with my home, it saddens me. Please note that both the guests who stayed the week before you and the week after you enjoyed my property. I have come to realize that not every property is for everyone. I welcome all critiques and compliments, though I must say your accountant of things lacks accuracy, and your malevolence is curious. I take pride in my home, it is my livelihood, be assured issues you mentioned were immediately addressed. I revised my website stating that I am in the process of editing the site plan and floor plan of one home. You are right, there is no Gazebo/Pergola on the Compound at Stargazer, there is however, an extra deck, and an additional 20’ x 30’ ten foot high Game room with a Pool Table. Before you booked, we spoke and I explained the change in the site and then followed up with an email that included a very detailed list of each home. I apologize that it was confusing to you. I purchased a marble table and chrome and wicker chairs for outside dining and the three decks. [You claimed there were four plastic chairs outside total. During your stay there was: 10 plastic chairs, a wooden bench, and logs to sit on around the bonfire]. I believe that renter and owner should be working as a team to make sure the the renter has the best visit possible. To obtain that goal, our signed contract stated: “Lessee is obligated to notify lessor or lessor’s agent of any problems, immediately.” You and your party stayed 5 nights without contacting me regarding a single concern you may have encountered. And, even though our signed contract states “all monies shall be non-refundable”, I offered you a “good will” refund to try and appease you. Your response was to negotiate. I never rescinded my offer. While hoping to resolve your issues, we exchanged several emails after your visit. One of the many things I clearly expressed to you was that the doors are top of the line Marvin Doors and they absolutely lock. Yet you chose to relay your false statement on the internet. It would have taken 3 minutes to explain to you how to lock them, if you had only called. The architectural term for your “large dirt pile”, is called a berm. You are right, there is a berm in front of the yard shared between the two homes that are rented. It adds privacy, and frames the views of the majestic mountains beyond, when guests are using the fire pit or hot tub or enjoying the compound.

We are a group of 15 older adults from all across the country and spent a delightful week at Stargazer. Aptyl named! The night time skies are spectacular! Fresh flowers, a bottle of the bubbly, clots of brochures and info on the area, and a very clean and orderly ambiance greeted us. Because of the many photos on the site, the houses were familiar to us before even arriving. Some small issues were addressed immediately and the owner and handyman responded quickly and all was well. We have been gathering in different locations around the country since 1996 and it was agreed that Taos and Stargazer Compound were the best of our choices. Lovely views in all directions, convenient to the town by two routes, and a pleasant fire pit and spa were enjoyed at night -- with S'mores for the final touch. Well-appointed kitchens and newly renovated bathtrooms helped to make the week all the more enjoyable. An assortment of beds -- all very comfortable -- helped to fit our diverse group of married and singles. For a larger group, this is Taos' best accomodation. We highly recommend it. Thanks, Linda, for sharing your houses with us! --- The WatermelonsRecommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

I have stayed at the Stargazer several times with groups of at least 15 students. For the past 17 years I have stayed in nearly every group lodge available in Taos. The Stargazer is by far the best lodge in Taos for larger groups because of the spacious design of the bedrooms, kitchen and meeting room. The Stargazer is a wonderful place to enjoy such a magical region.Recommended for: Families with teenagers

My family came from Washington State, Oregon, and Hawaii and everyone had a great time at this rental. The pool table was definitely a plus and we all enjoyed the hot tub. The appliances were top notch, loved the very quiet dishwasher, and had everything needed for a kitchen. Loved all the glasses from wine to margarita and martini glasses....it is all there. There are lots of dinner plates for very large groups and a great coffee maker!!! The location was great for going to the Pueblo and to the Plaza. We would go to the community pool in Taos which was very accessible. There are restaurants that are very close and also near the Gorge Bridge....a must see while in Taos. The Taos Ski Valley is a short drive away and then near all the town on Taos has to offer. Definitely would recommend these two houses for a family gathering!!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Real roses on the table, clean rooms, washer and dryer, helpful owner/manager, goodies in the refrigerator, brochures on local activities, and wonderful views from the decks.........I would stay there again. We stayed as a large group, occupying two of the houses. One house had an beautiful updated kitchen and large dining table where the whole group could eat together. My house had a basic kitchen - It had everything you needed but smaller then the other house.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners.

I stayed in Home A with 5 other guests while the rest of our party stayed in Home B. The house was neat and clean and having a washer and dryer was fantastic, but it needs to be updated in a couple of areas. While the kitchen in Home A has all the ammenities, it does need to be updated /modernized like the kitchen in Home B (a dishwasher especially). Maybe the kitchen could be opened up to the dining area with the addition of a serving bar. The bath with the washer/dryer definitely needs some work. The commode ran continually and from the stains this has been a long standing problem. Maybe replace the small tub/shower combination with a larger shower only since there is a tub in the other updated bath. Also, the rooms with the twin beds in both Home A & B needs to have sort of closet in the rooms - be it a functioning armoire or enclose a corner of the room. This is probably not an issue if children are staying in this room, but for adults it is an issue. In mixed company, it was a problem having to retrieve my clothes from the coat closet in the living room. Being from Texas, I was concerned because there was no air conditioning, but the house stayed pleasantly comfortable with the windows open. For our party of 13, these accommodtions were quite comfortable and I would readily stay here again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners.

We rented both houses at the same time. The owner left beautiful flowers on the table and treats in the refrigerator on our arrival. The houses were spotless and the beds were very comfortable. The location is fantastic and it is easy to get to any part of Taos within a few minutes drive. The plaza, Arroyo Seco, and the Ranchos plaza are all about a 10 minute drive. The Martinez Hacienda is also just around the corner! The view is spectacular, I just wish we would not have been under a fire ban so we could have enjoyed the great fire pit. The large table in the one house was perfect for our large group, giving us space to have everyone get together to eat and the kitchens were stocked with almost every kind of cooking pot (EVEN A CROCK POT!!!) anyone would need. There were also pots and pans to cook for groups up to 20. The grill outside was large, clean, and ready to use. I really like the fences as they provided privacy since the backyard is along Blueberry Hill. The Stargazer is also easy to find. The houses are decorated in a very tasteful style with some artwork we desperately wanted to buy! The owner was a fantastic host, constantly available to respond to any requests and provided a HUGE packet of brohcures, maps, and current infomration on the events in the area occurring during our stay. The addition to the one house also provided an extra area for entertaining the kids, complete with pool table, large couches, and a huge (but short) table perfect for my young kids to use as an art table without needing chairs. What a great place!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We leased this property for the second week in June 2011. We had 11 people, 5 Harleys and 2 cars. When we arrived, the property was just as pictured and described, clean and comfortable. In fact, Linda the owner who was very helpfull, had even added a gameroom with pool table to one of the homes. We didn't know she did that and were very happy that she did. It was a very nice suprise. The property was very well maintained and we lacked for really nothing. The kitchens were well stocked with all the cups, plates, pans etc... you would need. We had plenty of towls and wash clothes, and the washers/dryers in each home made our stay that much easier. We had 11 people taking showers each morning and we always had hot water. We had one issue arise where there was a minor leak in a shower. Linda immediately had the plumbers there and the leak was repaired. Linda was even there to make sure it was fixed correctly. The hot tub was clean and ready to go when we arrived. It was very nice to have one after spending each day riding our Harleys through northern New Mexico. The fire pit was used each night and plenty of chopped wood was available, including pinion wood. We had a great experience staying at this property and the price was well worth it. Taos is a beautiful place and just three miles away from the property. The golf course was close as well. Thanks again Linda for an enjoyable, comfortable place to stay. We will be back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Friends and I have gathered at Compound at Stargazer for the last five years and we can't wait for next years' return visit, it is beginning to feel like home. Every time we return the owner has made at least one dramatic improvement. The first year we came, only one of the homes was a vacation rental. The second year there was a new hot tub. The third year we came all the windows were replaced, French doors, were also added, that open out onto covered decks to sit and enjoy the amazing views. We have watched the extensive fence being built, painstakingly built over time, which so skillfully is both a piece of art and a functional amenity. It blocks the cars and beautifully frames the views. I just viewed the owner's website and the fences are in the photographs and the photographs of the property are a good representation of the compound, inside and out. We just had our fifth year at Compound at Stargazer and this year there was a new six burner gas grill outside. Linda definitley has pride in this property and each year it gets better and better. We return not only because of the location and convenience, but because of Linda's personal touches and care for us as her guests. By the way, we just visited in February and there are doors to every bedroom in the compound.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, sightseeing.

What an incredible place for a Family Reunion! What property did those people stay in? This was our second time staying at Compound at Stargazer. The location and the views are fantastic. Our first trip we stayed over Fourth of July and you can't beat this view for the town of Taos Fireworks. Both homes were clean and comfortable, with an attention to detail. Inside there was local art and photographs and a combination of new and antique furniture...a perfect balance. Upon arrival the owner had set a welcoming bouquet of flowers on each Dining room table, as well as fresh salsa, chips and beer in the fridge. Each home was very well equipped for our party of 16. One kitchen was stocked with over sized pots to make it easy to cook for our large group. There were plenty of dishes and silverware. When we arrived each home had sufficient soaps and toilet paper to get us started. Every bedroom had a door, we saw no exposed wires, there was a "missing" light switch which was capped. There are photographs of every room on the website and we found them to be extremely accurate. When you are outside, the owner did a great job of creating a very private compound. There are only five homes on this road and three belong to the compound. There is an artistic fence that creatively frames the majestic views in every direction and blocks the cars from the houses. So all you see are the views. The "mounds of dirt" is a large berm that blocks the house on the other side of the road, so you just see the mountains beyond and creates a wonderful sense of privacy for the property. Before we arrived the owner provided us with an abundance of maps and printed material on Taos to prepare us for our stay, including a list of favorites. She also called upon our arrival, welcomed us to her homes and to Taos and then took the time to guide us with more information and gave us answers to any questions we had. Have a look at her website and see if she does not pay attention to her guests every need. She takes great pride and attention to this property. We have also had the pleasure to stay at her other high end property in the historic district. The people who stayed must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed! There is no doubt our family we be back again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed at Stargazer over Thanksgiving 2010. When we arrived we were disappointed. The outside pictures do not look like what it does today. They have added fencing and mounds of dirt around the homes. They use this compound for a trash site. Inbetween two homes there is a pile of leftover building materials that is covered by tarp. Behind one home there is an old sink and countertops. Children can have access and it can be dangerous. The views inside were awesome but when you walk outside, we felt like we were in a dump site. The homes are old and of need of repair. Such as; formica countertops have holes, holes around outlets with exposed wires, missing light switch with exposed hole, and sinks in kitchen leak. We had to have a plumber come and fix leak under sink, and it never did stop leaking due to how old it is. The couches are old and they covered them with couch covers to hide there age. The sofa bed is horrible to sleep on. The water is well water and has sediment. The owners failed to come clean it out of the toilets before we rented and it was filthy. One bedroom has no door. They placed a sheet over the door frame. This place was also lacking essentials that are required to rent a place, such as; trash sacks, toilet paper, dish soap, and pot holders. We also had to ask for light bulbs to be replaced. Another concern we had was the furnace. The coils are exposed at the bottom and it has no cover. This can be a serious hazard to children. The outside firepit is awesome but the benches are falling apart and need to be repaired. We talked to the owner about all the concerns we had and expressed that we felt we had paid to much for this place considering the condition of the homes. She stated that she understood our concerns but did not offer to compensate us as we requested. We both agreed to disagree with each other and left it at that. We wished the owner would take more pride in there rental because this could be a fanastic place if they would put more time & money into the updates. The positives about this house is the views inside the home, and the nice touches the owner did before we arrived. The owner added flowers and beer to each home. But the nice touches did not makeup for the condition of the homes and we would not recommend this palce to anyone else considering the things we mentioned above.Did you find this review helpful? We had a family reunion last fall and stayed here, it was a perfect place since 2 homes together we all were all able to stay at the same location! Taos was fantastic and this location worked well as some wanted to hike in the ski valley, some wanted to visit the galleries and shops in town and we were centrally located between both. The homeowner gave us extra attention as guests - even left local product in the refrigerator for our welcome! Also left us plenty of information about the area, things and activities to do and see, etc. We felt like it was a comfortable and relaxed fit, and we've visited several places in Taos - we come every other year or so. Next time we're in Taos we'll be back!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, sightseeing.
