Year Purchased: 2008
I first came to the Tulum area was in 1978. I was fascinated by the Mayan culture and decided to do some independent university study on hieroglyphics of the Mayans. For many years I would spend three to six months here using Tulum as a base and going to various ruins. There was little tourism in Tulum and it was very rural. The 307 ‘highway’ was a single lane dirt road. Driving was insanely dangerous especially at night because if you came into on-coming traffic it was a game of chicken to see who would pull over to give the right-of-way on the single lane road. I spent my college years doing independent photographic studies in the Yucatan. When I graduated I bicycled around the world then sailed around the world so it was many years before I returned to the wondrous Mayan Riviera.
Why the Owner Chose Tankah
I felt like it was time to find a place where I could make a home. I had traveled and lived all over the world but the Yucatan was always calling me. I thought I would settle in Cape Town, South Africa but the political unrest and over-all instability of Africa told me it was time to go. Mexico is probably one of the safest and most stable countries in the world. I knew I could have a very high standard of living and enjoy the beautiful Caribbean Sea if I could find a place here. I searched for several years for the right beachfront location. The peace and solitude of Tankah was a perfect match for me. I was the first person to buy a lot in Tankah Paraiso. Since I had the choice of any lot I spent much time considering the area and choose the primo turtle nesting beach lot. Once my home was completed there seemed to be no name more appropriate… “Corazon de la Tortuga” (heart of the turtle).
My goal was to create three separate and distinct master bedrooms. I find that in many homes guests have to decide who gets the master. I wanted everyone to have a fine master suite. My travels have taken me all over the world and I was hoping to capture a piece of some of my favorite places yet have the house flow together as a whole. The suites include the Mexican Room, the Balinese Room and the Yucatan Room. The living area downstairs has a taste of Africa and the home theatre upstairs has a comfortable relaxed tropical feel. Attention to detail, beautiful simplicity and all modern conveniences are combined to create the perfect luxury accommodation in understated elegance.
The Unique Benefits of this House
Without question, for me, the most amazing thing about Corazon de la Tortuga is the incredible number of sea turtles we have returning year after year to lay their eggs right on the property. This year I had over 150 nests. During prime laying season (June/July) you can sit on the beach or watch from the roof and see several turtles make the journey from the sea to the beach to dig a nest and lay anywhere between 75 and 130 eggs. It is nothing short of spectacular. Paul (director of CEA, an ecological foundation based in Akumal) has suggested that we create a program to help catalogue and protect these precious creatures. Next year I hope to have everything in place so that we can better ensure the protection of the loggerheads, greens, and hawksbills that have chosen the beach at Corazon de la Tortuga as their nesting ground. Our guests will be able to see this program in place first hand and view these turtles naturally. This is a huge reason why I am here as I feel like we can truly make a difference in the preservation of this endangered species.
Certainly the one thing we can count on in life is change. We can all make a difference in this world no matter how great or small. I would like to believe that I might be able to help the turtle population by trying to create a safe place for them to nest. Corazon de la Tortuga is the perfect teaching ground to introduce the fragile life cycle of sea turtles. Guests are able to see from the comfort of their beach or terrace turtles laying and hatching. There are so many obstacles that these fragile creatures face. Only with education and protection can we hope to make a positive difference in this endangered population. It is my goal and desire to play some role in creating a safe haven in which these wonderful, gentle, creatures may thrive.

Of all the places we have stayed in Mexico and around the world, Corazon de la Tortuga was a winner! Our gracious hostess, Zubet was most friendly and welcoming, her recommendations for sightseeing and dining were perfect. The staff was efficient and friendly and our chef made dining at home a real treat. Corazon de la Tortuga is a beautiful property and a perfect location for sightseeing. With all the turtles nesting this wonderful peaceful home certainly lived up to its name. Well, I hope we didn't leave you in any doubt about how much we enjoyed our stay, and how much we appreciated your hospitality and thoughtfulness. So, thank you once again for a memorable holiday. We would very highly recommend Villa Corazon de la Tortuga. We found it ideal for our family vacation with our sons and their significant others. The three bedrooms all had king-size beds and an individual bathroom, so that each couple had a king-size bed and no one felt that they had the “less good” room. As a special treat, each day we found a new animal or doll on each of our beds, fashioned from towels by Francesca, our maid. The downstairs living area was a great place for us to congregate, chat, and play games. In the evenings, we took advantage of the flat-screen TV and the ample selection of DVDs to watch. We all took advantage of the exercise room which has a elliptical, a bike, and weights, and was great. Zubet, the owner, was available 24/7 and checked in with us at least twice a day to make sure that we had everything we needed, were enjoying ourselves and were comfortable. She was extremely helpful with suggestions for activities, and restaurants. She stayed on top of everything. Zubet had also just hired a new chef, Jose, who was superb. We had five dinners prepared by Jose, and each was better than the last. The food was so outstanding, and the dining room in the Villa so comfortable, that after the first two nights when Jose was not available, we opted not to go out to any of the local restaurants. The roof-top deck was excellent for star-gazing, and we enjoyed that and identifying the constellations on several nights we were down there. The ocean-front location of the property was beautiful, and we thoroughly enjoyed waking up to the view of the ocean (which each bedroom fronts). Despite some breezy weather, we were able to take relaxing walks on the beach. The people all over were extremely friendly everywhere.In addition, the location of the Villa is excellent. It is located on a quiet road which is an easy drive from the highway. The Villa location is also incredibly convenient to a large number of attractions, including the Tulum ruins (less than 10 minutes away), the Coba ruins (less than 35 minutes away), Hidden Worlds (less than 10 minutes away), Xel-Ha (less than 10 minutes away), Sian Ka’an (less than 30 minutes away) and everyone’s favorite day out, Akumel (less than 30 minutes away), and the local supermarket and bank in Tulum (less than 15 minutes away). To whom it may concern: I wanted to let you know that we had an unbelievable stay at the Villa Corazon de la Tortuga. The location in Tankah is a perfect setting to get away from it all. Being right on the ocean is such a beautiful setting and catching the sunrise over the ocean is spectacular. The roof top at night was the best place for star gazing that we have ever seen. It was simply breath-taking. Zubet's home is exquisite... from the materials she used to the layout of the house. She put such detail and artistic touches throughout the home. It very comfortably accommodated our two families with plenty of space for all to enjoy our vacation. We have often stayed in Villas for family vacations and the amenities we had available at Corazon de la Tortuga were far superior to any other holiday Villa we have stayed anywhere! We had chef services for our entire stay and the food was amazing. Everyone from the finicky children to the discerning palette of my wife (who is a chef in her own right) was well pleased. The full gym was a nice balance to the gourmet meals and some of us took advantage of the personal training services, which was very professional and enjoyable. Zubet is an unbelievable concierge and host. She provided us with plenty of brochures with activities around the area. She was helpful in guiding us to interesting and fun places to eat and explore. She gave us helpful tips on managing around the area. She truly made our vacation so easy and fun. We obviously can't say enough great things about the Corazon de la Tortuga House and Zubet. This vacation went way beyond our expectation with the house, location and most of all Zubet ! You would not be disappointed with a holiday here. Hello Sue Beth, We just wanted to thank so very much for a truly amazing stay. Honestly, it far exceeded our expectations. Your home is just spectacular... much more impressive live than on the internet. Wow! The bedrooms and baths were just killer awesome... everything was just perfect and very comfortable. The views... they were so calming! Sitting on the roof at night star-gazing and listening to the waves crash on the shore was so special. Your beach with all the turtle nests is fascinating. In all our travels, we have never seen anything like it anywhere. It should be featured on the Discovery Channel or something because it is just way crazy jammed with nests. In conclusion, everything... and I mean everything was just so wonderful and so beautifully put together... the house, the staff, the food and the fun. We just loved our vacation and we look forward to our visit again next year. Again, thank you for making everything so special. Gary and Mary
