Charming Garage Apartment ('Pelicans' Perch') Behind Our Home!
- Minimum stay:N/A
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
We built our DREAM HOME in historic St. Marys in 2008, starting with an adorable 'cottage' apartment where we lived above the garage while building our home a short 50 steps away. After moving into our home, we have filled our little upstairs cottage frequently with visitors, including friends, family, and renters. A recent young visitor branded our cottage as 'Pelicans' Perch' after sleeping in what she called the 'pelican room'. Once she saw the pelicans perching on pilings at the waterfront, the name was a 'done deal'!
'Pelicans' Perch' is a VERY SPACIOUS 700+ square feet cottage of 'charm', including a dining/small game/sleeping room off the great room. This room has a built-in booth and a 'pelican' day bed with a trundle bed underneath. The great room has a queen leather sofa sleeper and matching leather recliner, large coffee table, as well as a flat screen HD TV, bookcase, and more. The bedroom is spacious with built-in drawers and closets, and the laundry room is located right across from the bedroom for convenience. The full bath has a walk-in shower with a built-in seat. The kitchen is fully loaded, including a walk-in pantry! Our property is gated and fully fenced.
We have two bikes available for cruising our wonderful little town and waterfront, which is located just a few blocks away. Visitors can catch the ferry to Cumberland Island there, as well as the ferry to Fernandina, Fl. We love our home and our wonderful little community, and would love to share it with you!

Pelicans' Perch was the perfect home-away-from-home for the two of us for our two-week vacation in Georgia. The spacious apartment is very clean, bright and cheerfully decorated and is equipped with everything we could have wanted or needed, including, good quality appliances and cookware, comfortable bed and furniture, etc. After busy days out we enjoyed cooking our dinners there and eating "at home". The private patio was a great place to sit with a glass of wine before dinner, or a coffee before heading out in the morning. This is a nice, quiet location and we enjoyed the 15 minute walk to the "downtown" area and the waterfront park. We could also use the bikes provided. St. Mary's is a sweet little town, and a great starting place for day-trips to Cumberland Island (by ferry), and by car, Fernandina Beach, St, Simonds Island and Jekyll Island are all within an hour's drive. Our hosts - Peggy and Chip - were most welcoming and helpful and we thank them for thinking of everything. We would certainly recommend this property.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We had the pleasure of staying at Pelican's Perch for the month of January 2013. The cottage is beautifully appointed and maintained and oh so comfortable. We had everything we could have asked for and more; bikes, grill, lovely patio, and access to their garden. Our welcome was truly "southern". Peggy and Chip are wonderful hosts; charming, friendly and very helpful. We also had the privilege of meeting their beautiful family. ("Bailey" is also a charmer !) St. Mary's is a lovely place to visit with sightseeing nearby and good restaurants. I would and have highly recommended this property. We look forward to our return trip next year !Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you so much, Joan and Alan. We loved having you here, and so look forward to your return next year. St. Marys is such a wonderful hidden treasure, and having our renters love it as much as we love it is such a treat!

This is the perfect home away from home. The apartment is very clean, tastefully decorated and well equipped for daily living. However, the best part of our stay was Peggy and Chip and of course Bailey, a friendly cocker spaniel. On a scale of one to ten, they are a ten plus. We enjoyed our stay so much, that, we are returning next year for another 2 months. We have definitely found new friends.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, families with young children.
Owner response: Dear Ellen and Bill, Thank you for the wonderful review and very kind compliments. We so enjoyed having you here for two months, and can't wait for your return next year. St. Marys is missing two wonderful people with your absence!

We had a fantastic week in Saint Marys. Peggy, Chip, and their family were the most gracious hosts we have ever met in our extensive travels. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, this rental is truly relaxing, clean, comfortable, and we experienced the warmest welcome. We were fortunate enough to meet some of Peggy and Chip’s sweet and talented grandchildren, and the girls made us some of the most adorable paintings. Be sure to ask about having some art work done for you as a nice way to remember your trip, very reasonable and endearing. We can’t wait to get back to the town of Saint Marys and hope to see Peggy and Chip and their dog Bailey when we travel. We plan to rent again when the cottage is available. This was my third rental in Saint Marys, and my seventh rental from VRBO, and was by far the best! Don’t hesitate to book this cottage, we are glad we did and hope to return again soon!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: D & J, you make us blush! We loved having you stay with us, and truly look forward to your return. We are thrilled you loved the cottage, as well as our family and the granddaughters' artwork. Thank you for the endorsement of their work! We hope to see you here again soon. Peggy and Chip

We have rented through a storm that landed Memorial Weekend. Yet, the very clean, new looking, and well equipped apartment was delightful as are the hosts. Everything was better than expected, which is a rare find in any vacation rental. Their garden, which then becomes yours, had all the amenities a garden/patio could have. We brought our dog and we were welcomed with a clean and fresh smelling apartment and a beautiful and fenced in back yard for her to roam. Many more things they made available for our use, had the weather cooperated better: bikes, grill, lovely garden swing, a hammock for two and viewing an incredible and well tended vegetable garden. We will return (happily) and I could not recommend a more wonderful "dog friendly" charming place as Peggy and Chip have to offer. They are great at what they do!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: What nice words even though you were subjected to the winds and rain of Beryl! Love and share that positive life attitude! We are so pleased that you enjoyed your visit, and look forward to your return.

We stayed at Pelican's Perch for the month of April 2012.We enjoyed every minute of our stay. The apartment is lovely, had everything we needed, was nicely decorated and very comfortable.Peggy and Chip are wonderful hosts and our cocker spaniel Britney had fun playing with their cocker spaniel Bailey. We enjoyed meeting their friendly family and found St.Mary's to be an interesting and enjoyable town.It is conveniently located for visiting other equally interesting places near by.The gardens at Pelican's Perch are beautiful and Peggy and Chip are so generous with their time and gifts. We highly recommend this VRBO to others.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners.
Owner response: Thank you so much for your kind words! We loved having you here, and hope you'll come again. You are both such an inspiration to us... we want to find a sports team to join, John, since you are active on a curling team! Give Britney a hug from us!

Truly a beautiful property. The large fenced yard was perfect for our baby, Pepper. The hammock was perfect for her mom and the weather lovely for everybody. Cottage charming, bed comfy, appliances modern, high end. Beach chairs & umbrella supplied for our treks to Fernandina Beach. Chip, Peggy, Bailey and even Holly provided much appreciated info and fun. Good food at Sliders on Fernandina Beach, a short drive from St. Marys. The people of the town are very friendly, make you feel right at home. Cumberland Island, a must see. Jekyll Island, a worthwhile excursion.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you, Jo and Lorne, for your kind words and great feedback. We enjoyed having you here so much, and hope you'll visit from Canada again. (Our Bailey misses Pepper, too!) We appreciate the great care you took with our place; renters like you keep us loving what we do! The Hollis family

The birding is excellent - bluebirds in the gardens and barred owls calling at night. Bike riding on quiet, flat streets and hiking in nearby Crooked River State Park are a treat. Tennis at the nearby courts and the use of the excellent St. Mary's Library added to our enjoyment. Okefenokee Swamp, the Hofwyl-Broadfield rice plantation and Cumberland Island are all easy day trips among others. St. Mary's is an especially friendly southern town just as are the hosts, Peggy, Chip and son, Randy. Our February vacation was perfect.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you, Dick and Betsy, for your great review. We so loved having you here, and hope you'll come back our way again. You added so much to our community with your volunteer work at the library, as well as your sharing of gardening and bird information. Enjoy your spring and summer in Maine! The Hollis family

Stayed here for one week Nov. 6-13, 2010. Property was beyond what we had expected. The owners, Peegy and Chip, are the most gracious hosts. Close to everything yet in a quiet historical area. Easy access to the interstate and literally 30 minutes away takes you to additional sites worth exploring. Golf options are also great. Would recommend this VRBO rental and hope to return again. Thanks for a great week!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners.

Thank you Peggy and Chip for sharing your lovely apartment with my family. It was perfect in every way. All the little touches from the welcoming gifts, fans in every room (plus great AC), beautiful garden and grounds to enjoy, oh I could go on and on. We most appreciated you making us feel right at home. It was wonderful meeting your family and we loved all the great places we visited in and around St. Marys. It was a great adventure and staying at your place was the cherry on top. Thank you!!! Owner info
Year Purchased: 2008
About the owner: My husband, Chip, and I visited our children and grandchildren in St. Marys for several years, and over the years fell in love with it. The quaint and friendly community quickly became our 'place of choice', and when we retired, we could not move here fast enough. That decision has been one of the best we've ever made!
Why the Owner Chose St. Marys:
We built our garage apartment (now our rental) to live in while we constructed our house. We loved living in it so much that we decided to let others enjoy it too!
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
'Pelicans' Perch' is perfectly located for either a quiet, restful 'escape', or as a convenient place for numerous day trips, including Cumberland Island, Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, Fernandina Beach and Historic Town, the beaches of Jacksonville, great shopping in Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Savannah, the Okeefenokee Swamp, and much more.
