The traditional fishing village lays embedded in a sandy cove in the most south-western corner of Europe.
Even today there are dozens of fishing boats lying at the slope and the beach of Salema. Late afternoons the fisherman are preparing their boats for the following night. The next morning early birds can watch them return and bring home their last nights catch and later on to mend their nets at the promenade.
You can buy your fish for the evening barbeque freshly caught from the fishermen.
Even though the village is small and tranquil, there are quite a few restaurants, cafes and beach bars that are open from morning till night apart from some weeks in Winter. Particularly during the high season the charm of the fishing village attracts tourists from the surrounding area so there is always a cheerful ado at the village square and the beach.
There are 2 small supermarkets in the village that sell everyday goods like fruit and vegetables, groceries, pastries, toiletries ... For bulk shopping we advise to go to one of the 2 big supermarkets that are each only 3 km away from Salema, one in Budens, the other one in Vila do Bispo.
Salema beach is extensive and rich in variety so everyone can find a place according to his/her needs, whether behind a lonely cliff or amongst other sunbathers on a rented sun lounger. For even more variety you can explore the plentiful of partially deserted little coves nearby. Some you can only reach by foot. Each has got its own character. Following a path south-westwards from „Casa Boa Vida“ you’ll end up in pure nature. The only sign of civilisation is an insignificant path that leads you down to an idyllic bay. Before you start the way downyou’ll pass a small natural terrace. So close to the house and still in the middle of nowhere with a breathtaking view this has been our favourite picnic place. When the tides have rinsed away the fine sand, white pebbles and clay are revealed and the beach becomes an ideal place for artists and children to build sculptures. There are a number of small rock pools on the shore where no swimmers and children can safely enjoy the quality of mineralized marine waters. In the yellow orange rocks by the beach you can try to find the footprints of the Iguanodon dinosaur. If you pass the rocks on the other side of the cove you’ll soon reach the next bay. This beach, too, you can only reach afoot. In the steep wall of rocks there are plenty of nesting sites of various marine birds. As well, there is a wide open cave that offers shade and is a great place for your children to act as „Robinson Crusoe“. To the next beach you can get by car or have a walk through a wonderful wild valley or from across a little hill and pass an old roman ruin ... The next beach is special because its fine sand that reaches far back into the interior country. The beach consists of several connected coves, grottoes and cages as well as a beautiful rock gate.
This way from Salema you can follow many trails alongside the beaches from bay to bay, along the cliffs or through the hinterland across shallow hills, wild meadows with blossoming agaves and fragrant cistus, through olive groves, woods of eucalyptus trees, passing moorish and roman ruins, age-old menhirs or abandoned homesteads...We`ve prepared some walking guides for you that you will find in the house.
In only a quarter of an hour by car from Salema you reach the coarse west coast with it’s jagged cliffs, meters high surging billows, it’s extensive dunes and up to 80 meter high steep coast. The west coast is a place of pilgrimage for surfers and paragliders. The climate of the westcoast is noticable different. There is often a difference in temperature of a few degrees and the wind is stronger. This way you can experience 2 different climate zones.
Lagos and Sagres
Salema is located right between the two most important towns of the region, the picturesque lively Lagos and the most southwest point of Europe, the history laden town of Sagres. You can reach both towns in 15 minutes by car. The bus is going several times a day from Lagos via Salema to Sagres and back. Both towns have a marina and a fishing harbour. From here various boat tours are being offered as for example dolphin watching, grottoes tours, sea angling or a trip with a historical caravel. In the expanded pedestrian area in the old town of Lagos there are plenty of shops, cafés, restaurants, bars and discothèques.
Finally, a loose compilation of further possible leisure time activities in the Region: several adventure parks with various attractions all about water, hands on museum ‘Centro de Sciencia Vivo’ for children and adults in Lagos, the navigators school from 16th century und and the light house in Sagres, , flea market in Barao Sao Joao with pedal car hire for children, gypsy market, thermal spring in Monchique, Zoo, golf, surfing, snorkelling, diving, mountain biking, jeep safari, horse riding, donkey tours, bird watching ...
