Comfortable Island Style living at its Finest...Beach Cottage Cute… Authentic Hawaiian Retro Charm - At Home: living with style in West Hawaii, June, 2008.
This two-bedroom bungalow, Hale Polu Wai, is an ideal tropical vacation destination for a family with children, for two couples to share or a couple of people preferring a bit more space during their stay. This property is a favorite of “snow birds”, nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts. It is a perfect island hide-away for honeymooners and anyone who enjoys ending their day under the Hula Moon relaxing in their private hammock, listening to the breaking of the waves and an occasional chirp of a gecko, falling asleep with the rustling of palm leaves in the tropical wind and waking up to the jungle sounds of tropical birds.
This home is situated along one of the most beautiful stretches of natural sand and lava beach on the desirable Kohala Coast of Hawaii with easy water access right from the house and incredible unobstructed views of the ocean and magnificent sunsets year-round. No seawall, no drop-offs, gentle tide pools to explore, walk both directions on the 3-mile long beach.
The welcoming island style interiors and lanai have been designed with the guidance of award winning local designer, Shirley Wagner, who helped bring out the cottage’s retro charm using authentic Hawaiian furnishings and local, island inspired accessories and art. The house and kitchen are well stocked with most everything you need proven by many positive comments and return guests over the years. All the beds and linens are brand new and there is a new refrigerator/freezer in the kitchen. Is is clear that this home is designed, equipped and lovingly maintained for the frequent visits of its owners and guests alike. Please look through the amenities list for details.
Your day at the house might start by sipping your morning coffee on your private lanai or on the private beach watching turtles, spinner dolphins or migrating whales during the winter months. Manta rays and even a rare Hawaiian Monk Seal have been spotted right in front of the house. The snorkeling and scuba diving access is just 10 yards south of the house. The Puako reef (right out front) is considered one of the best scuba diving and snorkeling spots in the Hawaiian Islands.
Enjoy the afternoon swimming with sea turtles, snorkeling or kayaking right out front of the house, walking on the beach or simply relaxing with a good book or napping in the hammock in the shade of the coconut trees. The beautiful Puako Beach Drive, lined by large old Hawaiian trees and lush and fragrant shrubs and flowers is popular for walking, running and roller skating, especially in the cooler hours. In fact, many guests end up spending much of their vacation on the property or within walking distance enjoying the numerous activities and the relaxing Hawaiian setting rather than driving to go to places.
While this home seems “worlds away” from the resort home compounds of the island it is very conveniently located for visiting all the premier hotels and restaurants in South Kohala. The Mauna Kea, the Fairmont Orchid, the Mauna Lani and Hilton Hotels are just minutes away with their beaches, first class restaurants, shops and world class golf courses. Nearby Kohala Divers and Mauna Lani Watersports both offer various ocean activities including scuba diving and sunset/afternoon sails. You are right close to almost any activity you may choose, with the exception of the volcano which is a 2 1/2 -hour drive from Kohala.
Several fabulous public beaches are minutes away. Hapuna Beach (voted best beach in Hawaii by Conde Nast Magazine) and Waialea Beach (also known as “69-beach” by its hwy mile marker) both are wonderful for swimming, surfing and boogie boarding.
The neighborhood is called Puako, and it is conveniently located for touring all parts of the island. Driving time to the Kona airport is approx. 45 minutes, Kailua Kona 1 hour, Waimea 20 minutes, Kona Village and Hualalai 20 min., Hilo 1½ hours, Captain Cook, coffee country, 1¼ hours to mention a few.
This property may be rented together with the next door cottage to accommodate a larger group, depending on availability. In combination the homes would sleep max 8 adults and 2 children.

Erik I just wanted to drop you a note about our stay. We had a great time and truly enjoyed the location of your home. Debbie really enjoyed listening to the waves at night and waking to them in the morning. The snorkeling was great and so close to home. I am sure we will return to this location some time in the future. Mahalo Phil

I recently stayed at your beautiful home away from home. We had the luxury of staying five nights and that was not even enough. As I was at a conference much of the time I didn't get an opportunity to do any snorkeling near the house. We did enjoy many visits from sea turtles enjoying the sun and tide pools and I enjoyed the wildlife (turkeys, herons, and other various birds and geckos) on my morning walks through the neighborhood. This is my fourth visit to the Big Island and by far your place is the most peaceful, beautiful and clean. And it is in a great location to go up the coast or over to Hilo. You can't ask for better views, I have amazing sunset photos. The sounds of the wave lulled us to sleep each night. When I think of a place that reminds me of paradise this would be it! Thank you!

This beats any resort on the island! It's a lovely bungalow in a quiet neighborhood, near a market. The view is spectacular! My kids loved the tide pools. Saw lots of turtles. The snorkeling out past the tide pools has to be some of the best on the island. I have never seen such blue water. Centrally located for day trips. Slept 4 well. Has 2 beds 1 queen & 1 full. And an additional full futon off the living room. I was concerned with no AC (I don't do hot well) but the ocean breeze kept it cool. Tons of stars.
Owner response:Thank you for your nice comments- those are all reasons we love this place too.

What a wonderful place you have! Staying here has been a dream come true. The residence turtles have been our constant companion, and this morning we watched a school of dolphins chase a school of fish into the bay for an early lunch. Have explored so much of the island and realized that the beauty of your place is hard to match.

Thank you for letting us enjoy your Hale Polu Wai. It has so much Aloha. We felt like we were right at home. We live on Flathead Lake in Montana and needed to be somewhere quiet, and this was hte most pleasant place we've ever been. Mahalo lui noa, Robert and Marie P.S Snorkeling was delightful.
