My son and I stayed in the Wintergarten room (really it's a suite) for three nights while visiting Ashland to see plays at OSF. Irina was so lovely. She really made us feel welcome and yet gave us plenty of space. We enjoyed walking in the gorgeous garden and the room was very comfortable. We had a very nice full kitchen which was terrific for making light meals. Irina baked and shared some banana bread with us and even dropped off a zucchini from her garden! It was one of my most memorable stays in Ashland, and I've been there quite a number of times. The location was very convenient--an easy walk from everything.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

We loved our stay at the Europa Gaestehaus. We stayed in the Villa, which was quite cozy. My daughter and I called it Villa Villekulla from Pippi Longstocking. In a word, it was charming. The kitchen had everything we needed and some fun European touches. The beds were comfortable--always important for my husband especially (whose back generally does not like having to adjust to a new bed!). Everything was absolutely spic and span. The garden was a lovely setting for breakfast and a good book between plays. I especially liked that it was walking distance to the theaters in a loose sense of the definition. It's not one or even four blocks away, but we arrived at the theater within 10-15 minutes of departure and had a very nice stroll there and back--crucial when one is sitting for three hours! We felt so virtuous! The owner was very solicitous and helpful when we needed to arrive late. I highly recommend Europa Gaestehaus.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway.

Irenee really has a special place here and not only is it clean and well located- (you can walk to shops, theatre and restaurants) it is a lesson by example in eco-elegance. What you may not get from the other comments here is how much care has gone into the details. There is natural light that filters in and the pans in the kitchenette were solid iron and so on. (Bring your favorite coffee beans if you like to grind them fresh.) The garden is a lovely place to sit or explore and there are two cats outside, one (named Monkey) who will likely show you around the property. He knows where the mint leaves can be found to put in your water and what flowers are not to be missed. I am someone who is freakishly more sensitive to environmental toxins and this place was so clean and relaxing right down to the soap choices. There were board games, puzzles and books and the beds had this memory foam cushioning that was heavenly.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with young children, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

Irene was warm, gracious, and welcoming. Her "European Guesthouse Villa" was exactly what we were looking for...it was spacious, had an extra bedroom for our son, a deck with comfortable chairs for relaxing yet was private, and was an easy walk to town. Her garden was beautiful, and she shared with us some early strawberries . There were even fresh flowers and a bottle of sparkling juice to welcome us. The kitchen was adequately stocked, and the bathroom large and well appointed. We could not have asked for more, and would definitely recommend it.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My husband and I stayed at Irene's colorful apartment in June - which we chose especially because of the garden setting and ease of walking to the Shakespeare Festival. We were delighted - it was airy, clean, well-equipped, and had a beautiful view of the stars at night over our bed. The bathroom was European style - small but clean - I did miss having a sink there, but the kitchen sink was nearby and had a mirror over it. We entertained some friends on the patio one evening and enjoyed conversations with Irene. A second apartment shares the patio and would be great for an extended family stay.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

We stayed in both units, on two different trips, and had wonderful experiences both times. The hostess is gracious and welcoming. The home is beautiful and very comfortable. The walk into town and to the theatres is not long at all, and also very beautiful. Everything was clean and comfortable. We can't wait to come back.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Pros: Beautiful interior wood walls; spacious ceiling w/ huge skylight; Comfy bed (my son slept on an extra mattress that was brought in); very nice kitchen with all the enmities; great shower. Right outside the unit is a huge, shaded, beautifully maintained garden with great benches and chairs for reading. A 10-12 minute walk to the OSF. Close (by foot) to some great hiking trails, which Reni, the owner, shared with us. Saved money because we ate in all the time (Ashland is not cheap restaurant-wise). Cons: No separate sink in bathroom; you must use kitchen sink which is right next to bathroom. Also, in summer it can get very hot (we were there in end of July, when it was in the mid 90's). Owner Reni includes a cooling unit that works well enough. All in all, staying here was a great experience. Reni lives right next to the unit and was friendly and a wealth of info regarding restaurants, food shopping (I never knew about Ashland's Co-op), hiking, etc. The studio is really well done, tasteful, with good attention to detail. The cons stated above are not enough to keep me from giving it 5 stars. We are sure to come back next year. No puny expensive motels again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Irene is such a pleasant hostess! She made us very comfortable, provided helpful recommendations for places to eat, and was wonderfully friendly. She brought a friend by to introduce to us, really made us welcome. The Gaestehaus is very light and airy, perfect for a couple. Nicely decorated. We stayed a week, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The deck and garden were a perfect place for a glass of wine or a bit of downtime with a book. There was always a kitty friend to warm up your feet or lap (in the garden. My wife is very alergic to cats but had no problems in the house - I don't think they've ever been in there). Kitchen is good for light cooking. Location is quite nice, close to town and in a good neighborhood. I recommend it for a person/couple seeking peace and quiet or seeing the Ashland sights and plays, wine tasting, doing the Britt Festival, etc.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway.

I stayed at the Gaestehaus for three nights when I moved from the Twin Cities to Ashland, and the lodgings lived up to my expectations in every respect. The house is located in a beautiful setting with immediate access to the downtown area with its restaurants and theaters, and the photos can only hint at the house's appeal. The property is clean and well maintained, and I can say without reservation that the owner Irene is one of the most pleasant, helpful, and engaging people that I've ever met, not to mention the European flair that she adds to the atmosphere. (She's German with an extensive French-teaching background, and she's extremely well traveled.) This is an ideal location for anyone interested in sampling Ashland's charms, which are many: besides the restaurants and theaters, there are endless opportunities for outdoor activites of all kinds (biking, hiking, camping, etc.). Finally, I found the rates to be competitive and very reasonable indeed. I would (and will) recommend these accommodations to anyone.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

This space is really lovely. The owner is solicitous and gracious. The apartment is on the north side of the park in a neighborhood of fine homes. It is wonderfully quiet and bright; the sun rises through a wall and sky of light. When spring truly arrives I expect the garden will be spectacular. Highest recommendation for two.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+.
