“La Garance” is a lovely stone house situated in the countryside, 6 kilometers from the village of Gordes. It is named after a plant which grows wild in the garden amongst the olive and almond trees and the lavender, rosemary, roses and oleanders.
The interior of the house is spacious and bright, it is furnished with a mix of family antiques and contemporary furniture and features original artworks. This is a family home and throughout the house there are many bookcases filled with English language art books, novels, children’s books, cookbooks, and a wide selection of guidebooks. There is a beautiful living room with a stone wood-burning fireplace; a fully equipped kitchen; a dining area adjoining the kitchen; 3 bedrooms, 2 ½ bathrooms and a utility room.
The master bedroom has a queen size bed, an en suite bathroom (bath with shower, bidet), a walk-in closet and an antique stove and desk. At the other end of the house (it is built on a single level), there is one bedroom with two twin beds, a smaller bedroom with two twin beds and a bathroom (bath with shower). The house comfortably sleeps six people.
The living room, dining room and master bedroom have French doors opening onto a flagstone terrace which is one of the delights of the house. The terrace is shaded by a mature Mulberry tree and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy meals in hot summer weather. There are many local markets nearby and our kitchen is fully equipped for people who love to cook.
You can also relax while enjoying the swimming pool and its spectacular view of the valley and the Luberon mountain.
Practical details – the appliances include a mixed electric/gas burner stove-top; built in oven; dishwasher; refrigerator with separate freezer compartment; microwave oven; washing machine and dryer; two hot water tanks; hair dryers; a CD player; Satellite TV with DVD player; DSL and WiFi. Bed linens and towels, including pool towels, are provided. Most of the windows have screens.
Our ‘gardienne,’ will prepare the house for your arrival and comes once a week to clean. There is a renter’s manual with all the information you might need regarding the house and a book in which previous tenants have left information and recommendations for restaurants and activities in the area.
“La Garance” is the ideal place to relax but it is also perfectly located to explore the many attractions and activities of this beautiful region. At any time of year you can enjoy short drives through the garrigue, fruit orchards and vineyards to the perched villages nearby – Gordes and the village des Bories, Menebres, Roussillion with its ochre mines, Lacoste and the ruined chateau of the Marquis de Sade, Oppede, and Bonnieux. In the summer there are major theatre, opera, music and photography festivals in Avignon, Orange, Aix en Provence and Arles as well as local events. L’Isle sur la Sorgue (15 minutes away) is a major centre for antiques. For those particularly interested in wine, Châteauneuf du Pape and other Côtes du Rhone wine growing areas, such as Gigondas and Vacqueyras, are an easy drive away. As well, St. Rémy, Les Baux, Nîmes, the Pont du Gard, the Camargue, and beaches at Cassis and les Saintes Maries de la Mer are also within easy driving distance.
"La Garance" is easily accessible by air (Marseille airport is a 55 minute drive away) and by train, 2 3/4 hours by TGV from Paris to Avignon (a 40 minute drive to the house).

Why the Owner Chose Gordes
La Garance is a family home. Our mother fell in love with Provence when she came here with friends so she bought a parcel of land and built her dream house in 1979. She named it after a plant which grows wild in the garden.

This is our second stay at La Garance and we enjoyed it even more than our first time. Wonderfully situated, minutes from Gordes and near to many of the famous `perched` villages, La Garance is a warm, inviting and spacious home. It is private and tranquil and equipped with all you would want in a holiday home including a fabulous book collection, and the recent addition of English speaking TV channels an added bonus! The outside terrace is a magical place to eat, in the warmth of the continental evenings and our children spent many hours happily playing in the pool, or perfecting their boules technique! Needless to say we did not want to leave! We very much look forward to staying at La Garance again.

La Garance was the perfect spot to reconnect with friends that live in Spain. Even though we were there late in the year the colors of the Luberon Valley in reds and gold’s when the sun shining was stunning. The house felt warm and inviting the moment we stepped inside. We enjoyed the multitude of books in the evenings in front of the fire, so little time, so many books. The artwork on all the walls made us feel this was a well loved home and we felt special for being able to be a part of it. We spent our days visiting the village markets in Isle sur la Sorgue, Gordes, Bonnieux and preparing lovely dinners in the well stocked kitchen in the evenings. We had lunches in cafes in Goult, Cassis, St. Remy, Gordes and oh so many more. We visited vineyards, abbeys and an Olive Oil Mill. In short we had a marvelous time and at the end of the day came home to the most lovely and welcoming of homes. Our time there was to0 short and we all promised each other that we would return to this special home in this lovely valley.Diane M., Toronto, Canada

We had a fabulous time at La Garance. The house was very comfortable for 4, 2 adults and 2 children. It was hot so we enjoyed swimming in the pool. At night the house cooled down. We visited Gordes, Bonneiux, Goult, Les Baux and St Remy. We took many fond memories home with us.

My family and I enjoyed a week at La Garance May 29 - June 7th 2009. It was so fun refreshing for our daughters to run straight from the car into the pool. Before entering the house, I enjoyed cherries off the tree and picked some herbs from the planters on the stone terrace to supplement our dinner. This home is a lovely and relaxing refuge that affords privacy for parents and children alike as well as shared space both inside and out with all the simple/sophisticated charm one could hope for. My husband appreciated the small music library as much as I enjoyed chomping through some of the books. We enjoyed many day trips all over Provence and the south of France and could still make it home for a swim or some painting and crafts. Our gardienne Simone was incredibly kind and helpful. Though we're still a few years away from it, I would also enjoy visiting La Garance with another couple - or two! The livingroom is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail while contemplating the original art work before wandering out to the spacious terrace via the french doors to sit around the wrought iron table enjoy a feast of local food cooked up in the large kitchen. Meals in local restaurants were incredible. The best service and the best duck was in Les Beaumettes which also had fish and vegetarian choices for my husband. Ahhh...hopefully we'll go for two weeks next year!
