Keywords: Two Level Cedar Cabin
Cedar log cabin on a remote, heavily wooded lot, on the water, with 200 feet of lakefront shoreline, at the edge of Papineau-Labelle Provincial Preserve. Much of the furnishing in this family cabin is antique, but it's comfortable and fully operational.
Built on a rather steep incline, the cabin commands a view of the lake from a height of 35 steps above the lake and is 35 steps down from the parking lot above. At the shore is a boat house with dock and a crescent shaped sandy beach leading to a rocky point of land. The lake is drinkable, over a mile long and connects by boat with a larger lake (Lac La Minerve) to the north.
ACCOMMODATIONS: The cabin is of finished, solid, cedar log two level "Pan Abode" construction, built in 1965, with screened porch on the lake (east) side and a large open deck on the north side.
THE MAIN FLOOR: Features two bedrooms with closets, full bathroom, and the living/dining/kitchen area. The master bedroom has a queen-size bed and overlooks the lake. The smaller bedroom has a view of the forest and houses a 3/4 sized bed. A baby crib is available on request. The living room looks over the lake and forest through two picture windows, with fireplace, stereo, TV, telephone, and a couch which pulls out to make a single bed.
The kitchen/dining area occupies the west end of the main room and features a rustic "purpose-built" dining table that accommodates seven, a full-size refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, coffeemaker, and toaster. All appliances and cabin heating are electric. The bathroom is complete with toilet, sink, tub, and shower.
THE LOWER LEVEL: The lower level, with a door to the outside, features a corner bedroom with queen-size bed and windows facing the lake (to the east) and forest (to the south). Also on this floor is the utility/storage room containing washer, dryer, back-up generator and a back-up refrigerator.
THE LAY OF THE LAND: Homey, rustic and cozy, this cabin is located well away from the road, with a 200 foot entrance lane and easy parking for at least six cars. Winding, lighted stone steps lead down from the parking lot to the cabin. The large open deck on the north side of the cabin, with picnic table, chairs and benches is ideal for parties, sunbathing, cookouts, etc. The screened porch on the front (east side) provides a spectacular view of the lake and surrounding country, and is an ideal spot for intimate meals, lazing, reading and, with its two cots, for sleeping.
LOCATION: Lac Castor/La Minerve, Quebec, Canada is in the Laurentian Mountains 120 miles Northwest of Montreal, by paved highway to within one-half mile of the lot. It is 86 miles from Ottawa, including 11 miles of gravel through the Papineau-Labelle Preserve.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1965
An expatriot Canadian, I built this cabin (with majority help of expert local craftsmen) in the winter of 1965. My family and I used the place on weekends and for our summer vacations until we moved to the USA in 1979. We have rented it for for most of the summers since then. Should you happen to be an aircraft owner/pilot, the lake is ideal for seaplane flying, while our beach is excellent for docking.
Why the Owner Chose La Minerve
Remote, clean, drinkable lake, heavily wooded sparsely populated. Good fishing, watersports and high quality, friendly, local craftsmen.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
Quiet privacy, extraordinarly clear air, clean water.

Not what it seems

Review Submitted: 10/10/11
We are a family of 6 from Maryland with children ages 12, 10, 8 and 3. The owner is a very nice and reasonable man who was extremely helpful in assisting us plan our trip which ended up changing dates at the last minute. The owner was very accommodating and did everything to help us make our vacation work. With that being said, I am very sorry to say that things just did not work out. Upon arrival, we were taken aback at the beauty and tranquility of the property; however, we were equally taken aback with the condition and accessibility of the cabin itself. The parking spot was steeply perched some 30+ steps above the cabin with another 30+ steps leading down to the dock/water. The owner did communicate this; however, we were not at all prepared for such slippery, slanted, loose stepping stones which were lined with some very shabby railing, half of which was about to fall or already on the ground. The screened in porch had no cross railings lower than 2-3' and the deck railings were not very secure or stable. The interior was in no way child friendly, even for our 12 year old. Very thin glass table tops, electrical wires loosely stapled to the floor, flimsy furniture arranged together forming very narrow pathways between and steep, slippery stairs leading to the basement. There were many inappropriate items such as a display of coffee mugs with nude women falling into the mug as well as several posters with scantily clad women undressing. Sharp, rusty fishing tackle was strewn throughout the entire cabin as both decor and used gear. Writing this review is very difficult for me which is why I'm just now getting to doing so 3 months later. The owner was so eager and willing to accommodate us; it hurts me to even think about posting negatively about our stay with him. I really don't feel as though the owner misled us in any way, I just think that it's been quite awhile since he's had kids of his own and he mentioned it's been quite awhile since he's even visited the property due to age. Now, while I would NEVER recommend this property to ANY family with kids of ANY age, I have to say, this could be one of the coolest places to get away with a few of my fishing & drinking buddies. It is a bit old, dirty and worn down but not in a terrible way. I really felt like I could greatly enjoy a long weekend here by reliving the days of hanging out with the guys in a fort!
