If you do end up staying in Mort's Port, this is what we can predict: You won't want to leave. Treat yourself to a stay in this superb third floor unit in Kanai A Nalu, and you'll understand. The gentle trade winds, the swaying palms, and the ocean sounds will enchant you. And the view from the lanai--which is the same from the living area--couldn't be more stunning. If you have ever stayed in the more tourist-populated parts of the island, you will appreciate the relative seclusion and quiet nature of Maalaea.

Within walking distance are the shops and oceanview restaurants at Maalaea Harbor. You'll also find boats departing for snorkeling, diving, and whale watching adventures. Nearby is the Maui Ocean Center, as impressive an aquarium as you'll find anywhere. All this--plus a great ice cream parlor--is less than a mile away.

For exercise, you can head to the sandy beach to swim or surf. You'll be entering the water just 120 feet from the unit you are now calling home. Another option is to take a dip in the gated pool located in the center of the condo courtyard. If you want to take a scenic walk (or run) along the shoreline, you can go for miles on Sugar Beach, which has just two oceanfront condo buildings beyond ours to the east. Then you're on a vast stretch of sand alongside the Kealia nature preserve (a good place to spot shore birds such as Hawaiian stilts.)

You cannot do better than to select a condo unit in Kana'i A Nalu for your vacation. Its location on a sandy beach makes it a desirable destination, and all units are either oceanfront or oceanview. The building itself is well constructed (concrete walls and ceilings) and well maintained. Our two bedrooms are real rooms with real doors, not lofts and not sliding screens. If you like your privacy, you will like staying in our unit.

The views from this condo are breath-taking. When you can pry your eyes from the awesome views of the ocean and Mt. Haleakala (a dormant volcano), you'll notice that the grounds are so well landscaped and manicured that you might think you're in a botanical garden. Even the swimming pool is a visual delight with its tropical-flower-adorned waterfall continuously spilling fresh water down one side.

Just as impressive as what you see outside is what you will find inside the condo. The unit is tastefully decorated, featuring rattan living and dining furniture from the Kauai Collection. Throughout, you will find Hawaiian-themed artwork, mostly by local artists. You will see wood carvings, raku pottery, prints of scenic paintings, and decorative use of shells and corals. (There are also several original-by-owner-Sue watercolors).

You will rejoice at your selection of this condo unit if any of the following are important to you: A/C, FREE WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS, FLATSCREEN TVs with CABLE AND DVD PLAYERS, CD PLAYER with CD's, LENDING LIBRARY (no late fees ever), PORTABLE PHONE with FREE LONG DISTANCE, IN-UNIT SAFE, SNORKELING EQUIPMENT, WASHER/DRYER in unit, EGYPTIAN COTTON SHEETS, KINGSIZE BED in MBR, and TWIN BEDS (KING option) in 2nd BR.

Maybe not important to you now, but wait until you have settled into one: CUSHIONED RECLINER LOUNGE CHAIRS (two, inside) and SWIVEL BAR-HEIGHT CHAIRS WITH CUSHIONED SEATS (two, on the lanai). Also, many guests tell us that our four CUSHIONED DINING CHAIRS ON WHEELS are the most comfortable they have sat in.

Ultimately, though, it's not the furnishings that you're going to remember. It's more likely going to be the incredible views from the lanai and the strolls you'll take along the shoreline. Imprinted in your mind will be the postcard scene from the lanai: the lush greenery and tropical flowers in the foreground, the beautiful blue waters of the bay in the middle, and the majestic Haleakala in the background. All that framed by randomly stretching palm trees to complete the picture.

At night, it's just as impressive. The lights twinkling from Kihei across the bay vie for your attention with the stars more bright and more plentiful than you can imagine. You'll see. You really won't want to leave.

Our lanai runs parallel to the beach; it is not on an angle, as are most of the other oceanview units. Because of our straight-out view, the ocean can be seen from inside as far back as the kitchen. The view is what distinguishes this unit and what our renters rave about.

Why the Owner Chose Maalaea

This centrally located condominium on Maalaea Bay is relatively quiet, unlike many rental resorts in nearby towns that have constant traffic whizzing by. Behind our building and across the dead-end street is a sugar cane field. In front of the building is the ocean with a sandy beach. In 1994, while on a family vacation, we decided that the location is ideal and the building feels solid, so we bought the unit we were renting.

The Unique Benefits at this Condo

The view is astounding--straight out across Maalaea Bay with Mt. Haleakala in the background. We have seen whales and turtles from our lanai, which is why we provide binoculars for guests to use. At night, we love falling asleep to the rhythmic sound of the waves lapping up on the shore. We always return from Maui refreshed in body, mind, and spirit.

Owner's Map of Maalaea

Aloha. We are Mort and Sue, retired teachers who live in the west suburban Chicago area. Although we aren't able to come to Maui as often as we would like, every trip that we plan is filled with as much excitement as the cruise in 1983 that introduced us to this marvelous island. Each stay in the condo is a combination of work and pleasure for us. We make every effort to make our unit feel as comfortable and look as appealing (in an island kind of way) as we possibly can.

Excellent meals were had at [nearby restaurants]. Some of our most memorable meals, though, were on the lanai by candlelight. We're going to miss the cooling winds and falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves and swaying palms. Hopefully we can return to Maui soon!

Review of magnificent Maui condo

Guest: Joanie (Rancho Mirage, CA)
Date of Stay: 08/01/11 Review Submitted: 08/23/11

Everythinig Sue and Mort wrote about their condo is right on. My husband and I stayed their for two wonderful weeks and hated to leave. We were there in the summer so unfortunately did not see whales. Hope we can return some time during whale season. The location is fabulous.. Easy walking distance to the Acquarium. We were about 15 to 20 minutes from Kihea where there are many good not too expensive restaurants. We were also about 20 to 25 minutes from Lahaina. Our last night on Maui we ate at the Lahaina Matai restaurant upstairs where we had a gorgeous view of the sunset. Food was OK, the maitai was disappointing. I shall never forget the view from the lanai of the condo. Magnificent. Loved falling asleep at night to the sound of the waves. I rate this condo a real winner. Joan Rose

Owner response:We are always gratified when past renters rate the experience of staying in Mort's Port as "a real winner" (5 stars). If your only disappointment was with one drink in a restaurant that's not on our recommended list, anyway, I'd say you two had a pretty good time on the island! Come again any time. Sue

Great place to stay

Guest: Bluejazz (Corvallis, OR USA)
Date of Stay: 07/27/11 Review Submitted: 08/09/11

We had a wonderful stay in "Mort's Port" on Maui. The location was centrally located and easy to find. The condo was well stocked with kitchenware and beach toys like boogie boards, masks and snorkels. We appreciated having a selection of CD's to choose from, including the guide for the "Road to Hana". We walked to the Maui Aquarium which was nearby as was our sailboat to Molokini. The easy access to the beach was appreciated. Mort and Sue were a pleasure to work with, they were most accommodating for a complicated international schedule and varying flight plans. We would certainly stay here again if and when we return to Maui.

Owner response:Thank you for your kind words. We were happy to offer you a hold on your dates, knowing that you were traveling on business and couldn't get the deposit to us in our usual requested time frame. From an email that you sent, we could tell that your teenage granddaughter had a great time during her first visit to our favorite island. Hope you can return! Mort & Sue

A Place To Spend Quality Time

Guest: Frog (Illonis)
Date of Stay: 05/19/11 Review Submitted: 05/26/11

For my first visit to Maui this was exceptional. Sue & Mort's tips on what to see & where to eat economically were especially helpful. Favorites were Iao Point, Sugar Cane Museum and don't miss Ulalena show in Lahaina. The grounds were maintained beautifully & the washer &dryer were so handy. All the comforts of home with the beauty of Maui. Thanks Mort & Sue for a great stay in Mort's Port.

Owner response:Aloha, Frog. We appreciate your positive comments and are pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Mort's Port. We have not yet been to the Sugar Cane Museum, but enough of our renters have said that they like it that we may have to check it out for ourselves. It will probably be added to our Tourist Tips document by 2012. As you saw, Iao and Ulalena are already on our list of recommendations. Mahalo from M and S
