Location: Maalaea, Central Maui, Maui, Hawaii, USA (Oceanview condo on Maalaea Bay, 15 min. from Kahului Airport) View Map

Accommodations:  Condominium, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4)

You won't want to leave. Treat yourself to a stay in this superb third floor unit in Kanai A Nalu, and you'll understand. The gentle trade winds, the swaying palms, and the ocean sounds will enchant you. And the view from the lanai couldn't be more stunning. If you have ever stayed in the more tourist-populated parts of the island, you will appreciate the relative seclusion and quiet nature of Maalaea.

Within walking distance are the shops and oceanview restaurants at Maalaea Harbor. You'll also find boats departing for snorkeling, diving, and whale watching adventures. Nearby is the Maui Ocean Center, as impressive an aquarium as you'll find anywhere. All this--plus a great ice cream parlor--is just 1/2 mile away.

For exercise, you can head to the sandy beach to swim or surf. You'll be entering the water just 120 feet from the unit you are now calling home. Another option is to take a dip in the private pool. If you want to take a scenic walk (or run) along the shoreline, you can go for miles on Sugar Beach, which has just two oceanfront condo buildings beyond ours to the east. Then you're alongside a shoreline nature preserve.

You cannot do better than to select a condo unit in Kana'i A Nalu for your vacation. Its location on a sandy beach makes it a desirable destination, and all units are either oceanfront or oceanview. The building itself is well constructed (concrete walls and ceilings) and well maintained. The two bedrooms are real rooms with real doors, not lofts and not sliding screens. If you like your privacy, you will like staying at KAN.

The views from this condo are breath-taking. When you can pry your eyes from the awesome views of the ocean and Mt. Haleakala (a dormant volcano), you'll notice that the grounds are so well landscaped and manicured that you might think you're in a botanical garden. Even the swimming pool is a visual delight with its tropical-flower-adorned waterfall continuously spilling fresh water down one side.

Just as impressive as what you see outside is what you will find inside the condo. The unit is tastefully decorated, featuring rattan living and dining furniture from the Kauai Collection. Throughout, you will find Hawaiian-themed artwork, mostly by local artists. (There are also several original-by-owner-Sue watercolors). We hope you will appreciate the raku ceramic humuhumunukunukuapuaa (read: fish) hanging on the wall and the honu (turtle) woodcarvings on the soffit and dining table.

You will rejoice at your selection of this condo unit if any of the following are important to you: A/C, FREE WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS, FLATSCREEN TVs with CABLE AND DVD PLAYERS, CD PLAYER with CD's, LENDING LIBRARY (no late fees ever), PORTABLE PHONE with DIGITAL ANSWERING MACHINE, SNORKELING EQUIPMENT, WASHER/DRYER in unit, KINGSIZE BED in MBR, and TWIN BEDS (KING option) in 2nd BR.

Maybe not important to you now, but wait until you have settled into one (to read, watch TV, or gaze at the ocean): TWO CUSHIONED RECLINER LOUNGE CHAIRS.

Ultimately, though, it's not the stuff inside that you're going to remember. It's more likely going to be the incredible views from the lanai and the strolls you'll take along the shoreline. Imprinted in your mind will be the postcard scene from the lanai: the lush greenery and the uncrowded beach in the foreground, the beautiful blue of the bay in the middle, and the majestic Haleakala in the background. All that framed by randomly stretching palm trees to complete the picture.

At night, it's just as impressive. The lights twinkling from Kihei across the bay vie for your attention with the stars more bright and more plentiful than you can imagine. You'll see. You really won't want to leave.

Our lanai runs parallel to the beach; it is not on an angle, as are most of the other oceanview units. Because of our straight-out view, the ocean can be seen from inside as far back as the kitchen. The view is what distinguishes this unit.

This Condo is Too Beautiful and Too Comfortable...

Year Purchased: 1994

Why the Owner Chose Maalaea

This centrally located condominium on Maalaea Bay is relatively quiet, unlike many rental resorts in nearby towns that have constant traffic whizzing by. Behind our building and across the dead-end street is a sugar cane field. In front of the building is the ocean with a sandy beach. Wander around and you'll see a beautifully designed pool, orchids and other tropical flowers, palm trees, and the occasional gecko. In 1994, while on a family vacation, we decided that the location of Kanai A Nalu is ideal and the building feels solid, so we bought the unit we were renting.

The Unique Benefits at this Condominium

The view is superb--straight out across Maalaea Bay with Mt. Haleakala in the background. We have seen whales and turtles from our lanai, which is why we provide binoculars for guests to use. At night, we love falling asleep to the rhythmic sound of the waves lapping up on the shore. We always return from Maui refreshed in body, mind, and spirit.

Owner's Map of Maalaea

Aloha. We are Mort and Sue, retired teachers who live in the west suburban Chicago area. Although we aren't able to come to Maui as often as we would like, every trip that we plan is filled with as much excitement as the cruise in 1983 that introduced us to this marvelous island. Each stay in the condo is a combination of work and pleasure for us. We make every effort to make our unit feel as comfortable and look as appealing (in an island kind of way) as we possibly can.
