If you end up staying in Mort's Port, this is what we can predict: You won't want to leave. Treat yourself to a stay in this superb third floor unit in Kanai A Nalu, and you'll understand. The gentle trade winds, the swaying palms, and the ocean sounds will enchant you. And the views from inside and out couldn't be more stunning. If you have ever stayed in the more tourist-populated parts of the island, you will appreciate the relative seclusion and quiet nature of Maalaea.
Within walking distance are the shops and oceanview restaurants at Maalaea Harbor. You'll also find boats departing for snorkeling, diving, and whale watching adventures. Also nearby is the Maui Ocean Center, as impressive an aquarium as you'll find anywhere. All this--plus a great ice cream parlor--is less than a mile away.
For exercise, you can head to the sandy beach to swim or surf. You'll be entering the water just 120 feet from the unit you are now calling home. Another option is to take a dip in the gated pool located in the center of the condo courtyard. If you want to take a scenic walk (or run) along the shoreline, you can go for miles on Sugar Beach, which has just two oceanfront condo buildings beyond ours to the east. Then you're on a vast stretch of sand alongside the Kealia nature preserve (a good place to spot shore birds such as Hawaiian stilts.)
You cannot do better than to select a condo unit in Kana'i A Nalu for your vacation. Its location on a sandy beach makes it a desirable destination, and all units are either oceanfront or oceanview. The building itself is well constructed (concrete walls and ceilings) and well maintained. Our two bedrooms are real rooms with real doors, not lofts and not sliding screens. If you like your privacy, you will like staying in our unit.
The views from this condo are breath-taking. When you can pry your eyes from the awesome views of the ocean and Mt. Haleakala (a dormant volcano), you'll notice that the grounds are so well landscaped and manicured that you might think you're in a botanical garden. Even the swimming pool is a visual delight with its tropical-flower-adorned waterfall continuously spilling fresh water down one side.
Just as impressive as what you see outside is what you will find inside the condo. The unit is tastefully decorated, featuring rattan living and dining furniture from the Kauai Collection. Throughout, you will find Hawaiian-themed artwork, mostly by local artists. You will see wood carvings, raku pottery, prints of scenic paintings, and decorative use of shells and corals. (There are also several original-by-owner-Sue watercolors).
You will rejoice at your selection of this condo unit if any of the following are important to you: A/C, FREE WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS, FLATSCREEN TVs with CABLE AND DVD PLAYERS, MINI-STEREO SYSTEM with iPOD and iPHONE DOCKS, LENDING LIBRARY (no late fees ever), PORTABLE PHONE with FREE LONG DISTANCE, IN-UNIT SAFE, SNORKELING EQUIPMENT, WASHER/DRYER in unit, EGYPTIAN COTTON SHEETS, KINGSIZE BED in MBR, and TWIN BEDS (KING option) in 2nd BR.
Maybe not important to you now, but wait until you have settled into one: CUSHIONED RECLINER LOUNGE CHAIRS (two, inside) and SWIVEL BAR-HEIGHT CHAIRS WITH CUSHIONED SEATS (two, on the lanai). Also, many guests tell us that our four CUSHIONED DINING CHAIRS ON WHEELS are the most comfortable they have sat in.
Completed in May 2012: Bathroom remodeling including two NEW CUSTOM-BUILT STONE TILE SHOWERS (one a walk-in) and comfort-designed Kohler toilets.
Ultimately, though, it's not what's inside that you're going to remember. It's more likely going to be the incredible views from the lanai and the strolls you'll take along the shoreline. Imprinted in your mind will be the postcard scene from the 3rd floor: the lush greenery and tropical flowers in the foreground, the beautiful blue waters of the bay in the middle, and the majestic Haleakala in the background. All that framed by randomly stretching palm trees to complete the picture.
At night, it's just as impressive. The lights twinkling from Kihei across the bay vie for your attention with the stars more bright and more plentiful than you can imagine. You'll see. You really won't want to leave.

Just returned from Maui. This rental was perfect- lots of personal touches that made us feel right at home. The upgrades were wonderful- showers were really nice. Large flat screen T V 's, large & small coolers to take to beach, beach chairs to use, snorkel gear, boogie boards, beach towels. The owners have thought of everything for your enjoyment. Nice kitchen, dining table, all, furnishings were nice. Lovely ocean view from lanai- saw sea turtles, even a Hawaaian monk seal right in front of the condo. Beach was super there, very secluded and quiet- I felt like it was a private beach. A nice change from the busier parts of Maui in Kihei and Lahaina. At least six places to eat right in the harbor. All good too. The owners were very good to work with- excellent communication. I would highly recommend this unit to my friends and family. Can't wait to go back myself!Recommended for: Families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Wow! Reading this review makes us homesick for our home-away-from-home. So glad that we are able to get back there again soon. We know that Mort's Port will be in great shape. All of our renters have been very trustworthy (and appreciative) in recent years. Who knew that being a landlord could be so enjoyable?! Mahalo to all. M and S

This is the very best of accommodations. The view is worth it alone, their pictures are very accurate and the condo is extremely clean! Great updated bathrooms. The location is perfect you are in the middle so 20 minutes each way and you are at another great location. It is all the little things that are not mentioned that push this property over the top,the owners provided coolers, adult beach toys, almost a fully stocked kitchen of spices, oils, plastic containers and even grilling tools. They have detergent for the washer, and dryer sheets for you to use. These owners go above and beyond for you comfort. You will not be disappointed if you stay here!! Sue communicates well before and after your visit too. Trust me--you won't be disappointed if you stay in this condo--we certainly weren't. I highly recommend it!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: We always like to hear that guests have appreciated our recent upgrades. Thanks for mentioning the showers in your review. We can't wait to get back there and try the new walk-in shower ourselves! We're glad that you found your way back to Kanai A Nalu after a couple of decades away. We chuckled when we read your email telling us that you thought you had to settle for someplace else since you couldn't remember the name of the place you stayed before. Then when you drove up to the building, you recognized your deja vu situation. Mahalo, M & S

My wife and I rented this condo for one week to celebrate her 50th birthday. We were very pleased to find the unit as it was advertised by Sue and Mort. We had our breakfast on the lanai each morning taking in the view of the beautiful garden and beach. The information which was provided by Sue was very helpful. Also, the supplies which were in the condo upon arrival, such as hand soap, laundry detergent and paper products were much appreciated. The condo is approximately 15 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from Kihei, 20 minutes from Lahaina and 30 minutes from Kapalua and Wailea. We enjoyed our meals at Cheese Burger Island Style in Wailea, Café O'lei at the Dunes Golf Club, Stella Blues and Fred's Mexican Restaurant in Kihei. For a special celebration dinner, Spago's at the Four Seasons in Wailea is highly recommended. Amazing sunset pictures can be taken from the roadside on South Kihei Road. We would highly recommend renting the condo and we would consider renting it again if (when) we return to Maui.Recommended for: Girls getaway, people with disabilities, families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: A great big Mahalo for this detailed, laudatory review! It sounds like you picked the perfect place to celebrate your wife's special birthday. Be sure to come back for your birthday, an anniversary, or any occasion at all--just so you get back to Mort's Port before too much time goes by. We have discounts for returnees to make the draw even stronger! In the spirit of Aloha, Mort and Sue

We had a great time and are grateful for all the suggestions as to what to see and where to eat. [The condo owners] also receive kudos for a well stocked kitchen (best we have ever seen) and enough hangers!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

About the owner: Aloha. We are Mort and Sue, retired teachers who live near Chicago. Although we aren't able to come to Maui as often as we would like, every trip is filled with as much excitement as the cruise that introduced us to this marvelous island. We strive to make our unit feel as comfortable and look as appealing (in an island kind of way) as we possibly can.
Why the Owner Chose Maalaea:
This centrally located condominium on Maalaea Bay is relatively quiet, unlike many rental resorts in nearby towns that have constant traffic whizzing by. We like the building being all-concrete construction and the sandy beach being walkable for 5 miles to the east. It's also nice to be so close to the harbor, restaurants, and shops.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
The view is astounding--straight out across Maalaea Bay with Mt. Haleakala in the background. We have seen whales and turtles from our lanai, which is why we provide binoculars for guests to use. At night, we love falling asleep to the rhythmic sound of the waves lapping up on the shore. We always return from Maui refreshed in body, mind, and spirit.
