A private retreat in paradise This cottage was the perfect size for the two of us. You really feel like you're on your own private island. I loved waking up to the birds chirping and the sounds of the breeze in the trees. You can tell the owners are meticulous about maintaining the property–everything was spotless. It isn't on the beach, in fact it's not in a touristy part of the island, which was a plus for us. You really get the feel for what it's like to be a local. You can easily get to the touristy areas by car (less than an hour to most places). Grilling some of Hank's fresh asparagus was a real treat (so were the rest of the veggies he grows!) Excellent location to escape the crowds A great location to escape the crowded parts of Maui, perfect of you want to explore the whole island. Peaceful, relaxing, everything you need is in the cottage. Hank and Barbara are friendly and helpful but not in your face. "The experience at the Hookipa Bayview Cottage was very relaxing." The accomodations were easy to set up with Barbara and no surprises along the way. The cottage was spotless when we arrived. The home had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. In my view, it was superior to a hotel. The stay was perfect and I'd return to stay again if I ever make it back to Maui. Barbara and Hank, We had the most wonderfully secluded honeymoon we could imagine. Thank you so much for your hospitality and cottage rental. Unfortunately it is back to reality for us now! Sorry about all of the extra food in the fridge. We simply overbought and ended up eating at Mama's Fish House 3 nights because the food is so good there! Thank you again sooo much, Dan and LilyDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Dear Hank & Barbara Thanks for being such great hosts. You made our stay on Maui comfortable and enjoyable. If we would come to Maui again, we would come bact to Ho'okipa Bayview Cottage. Irvin & Janet Shirk New YorkDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Barbara & Hank, We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on Maui and especially in your absolutely "perfect" cottage, nestled in the hills and away from the crowds in the touristy areas of the island. It was exactly what we had hoped for -peaceful retreat that allowed us some time to read and relax and decide how much and what we wanted to see on the rest of the island. When we returned to the cottage after a day of exploring, it was so calming to drive up the driveway and pull up next to your comfortable cottage. We both marvel at how well designed and built the cottage is --it shows how much you value the comfort of your visitors. Again, thanks for everything you did and offered to do. We would definitely recommend your cottage to our friends and hope to return some day soon. Rob & Pat Cedar Rapids, IowaDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

For anyone who loves Maui, as Elaine and I do, a stay at Barbara and Hank’s “Honeymoon Cottage” is a must. Away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts, you really begin to feel like you know the island. It’s tempting to think that Maui should be called “The Garden Isle” as you enjoy the wonderful flowering bushes and trees surrounding this cozy getaway. Yes, it’s a bit of a drive to the South Maui beaches, but Baldwin Park, with a great beach, and Ho’okipa Lookout (great for watching the wind surfers) are very close by. And if your agenda includes Hana and Haleakala, or lunch/dinner at Mama’s Fish House, they’re a lot closer than if you were staying in the resort area. Most likely, everything you might need is provided. And, if not, Barbara and Hank are right next door to answer your needs. A treat for us was some of the most tasty parsley we have ever eaten, fresh from Hank’s garden. We were a little too early for Maui onions, but I’ll bet he could be talked out of one for your salad or hamburger when they’re in season. In short, a beautiful, restful place to stay - it’s on our list for a return. Bob & Elaine Koester Grantham, NHDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Aloha, we have vacationed on Maui five times previously at a lovely resort, right on the beach, for two weeks per year. We then decided to get away fro the crowd & the pseudo Hawaii resort scene to a more affordable, quiet, peaceful & authentic place. Fortunately we discovered Hookipa Bayview cottage in Upcountry Maui. The cottage is immaculate, open & airy and comfortable. The view of the bay & mountains from the lanai is spectacular. Hank & Barbara are the perfect hosts. They are efficient, yet, friendly without being intrusive. We enjoy the scenic byways & small villages of Upcountry Maui. There are many fine restaurants with good food & local musical entertainment. The citrus fruit, pineapple fields, & fragrant colorful tropical flowers add a special touch to the island experience. Awe inspiring are the rainbows appearing & disappearing, all adding to the almost ethereal atmosphere of Upcountry Maui. We like to relax with coffee & fresh scones while sitting at the Hookipa Bay Overlook watching the surfers & wind surfers ride the waves. Great place to catch a glimpse of whales also. The cottage is located near everything we enjoy and yet is tucked away in a peaceful & quiet location. We have been able to stay at Hookipa Bayview cottage for an entire month each year for the past three years and are looking forward to coming back again in 2011. We love it at Hookipa Bayview cottage. Warren & Diana Elkhart, INDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We've stayed with Hank and Barbara three times, and each time we are amazed and very grateful for the friendly but non-intrusive hospitality they offer. The cottage itself is meticulously maintained by them, and the view and quiet comfort are outstanding, definitely our favorite place to stay on Maui.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.

Dear Hank and Barbara, Chris and I want to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at the cottage. Since we live out in the country in Portland it was much like being at home for us. Very private, very comfortable and very clean. It is one of the cleanest homes we have ever stayed in. It was so nice to come home each night to our place away from crowds. We did not mind the commute to the beaches or wherever we chose to go. We felt in fact that this allowed us to feel less like visitors and more like island residents. It gave us a chance each day to see the same views change as the weather changed. Driving past Hookipa Bay each day is a wonderful treat. We especially liked being able to take back roads to get up to the crater as we avoided traffic from the other direction. I loved the washer and dryer location outdoors. The experience was like being in a well protected tree house. We love having the outdoor come in as well as the indoor out, so your home was perfect with all the patio doors and windows and the protected deck. For anyone who wants to save money and not go out to eat a bunch, we found the kitchen very easy to work in. We appreciated having a cooler, beach chairs and towels provided. We were able to pack a lunch each day and take it with us. We cooked in every evening and ate twice for breakfast at Charley's. We had friends over to celebrate Chris's birthday. Chris loved the gas grill so much that we made a last minute stop on our last night there to buy steaks to grill out with. Next time we will stay longer so we can enjoy a few days just hanging around the cottage. It is very peaceful and there are many nice area roads to walk on. We truly had a tropical experience. Rainbows, cardinals in the tree near the deck, Tradewinds, sunsets and more. Mahalo and regards, Lori and ChrisRecommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My wife and I stayed a week, enough time to relax and refresh us. The cottage is bright, airy and very clean. Although within site of the main house, the cottage has its own driveway and is very private. Barbara and Hank have included everything needed for a wonderful holiday, even beach towels, beach chairs and a cold box. We enjoyed spectacular sunsets, rainbows, real (warm) rain and the sweet smells and sounds that can only come from a rain forest environment. We definitely want to return! · By Malcolm Davies from San Rafael, CA on 9/30/2009 for a stay in 9/1/2009Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

This being our first visit to Maui & both being independant travellers/surfers/windsurfers, when looking for accomadatiion we needed a place that was close to the north shore & allowed us to come and go as we pleased. Not only this we also need somewhere quiet & relaxing after long days on Maui's awasome beaches & seeing some of its stunnig countryside. The Cottage provided this and more. Surrounded by stunnig tropical garden plants that fill the air with a fragrance better than any perfume you'll ever buy,in a location that overlooks woodland, pineapple fields & Hookipa bay in the diatance,a breathtaking view as you sip coffee or juice in the morning, one you just have to see!!.The inside of the cottage wont disapoint either, buit in a traditional style with stunning wood floors & high vaulted ceilings, beautiful furniture & just about everything you have in your house Hank & Barbra have provided in the Cottage for your vacation, they realy have thought of everything. We were lucky enough to spend our time not just windsurfing & surfing but travelled the length & bredth of Maui discovering the island for ourselves places no tour would ever take you & also checked out a few of the so called exclusive places, hotels & acomadatoin on the south of the island (the ones you'll see in the brochure's) The Hookipa Bay View beats them all, here you'll have it all to yourself. Just spend a week or two & check this place out you'll be hooked for life. We'll be back for sure & it takes a day or more for us to travel there from the UK. Best Wishes Hank & Barbera Many thanks once again Vince & ChristineRecommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you Vince and Christine for choosing to stay in our cottage. It was our pleasure to meet you and we hope that you will keep those great memories of Maui and return to this beautiful island again. Barbara & Hank

I can't say enough about how wonderful Hookipa Bayview Cottage was. Everything was pristine clean. Everything you need is there. The BBQ was in mint condition. There was a microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker. All the comforts of home and more. Not only was the location beautiful to sit on the great lanai and see the bay below, but at night there was a wonderful breeze and you were never really hot. It was perfect. I would go back in a heartbeat. We also discovered a nice little restaurant in Haiku with entertainment on Monday nights. It was great. We stayed 11 days and loved every one of them. I would encourage everyone to stay for at least 7-8 minimum in order to see the island in it's entirety. Definitely our best lodging experience in all of the Hawaiian Islands. · By Dianne Kiana from Kitchener, Ontario Canada on 9/30/2009 for a stay in 7/1/2009Did you find this review helpful? My husband and I spent a week in this cottage two years ago, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. We loved it so much that we returned this April for another week! A great location... close to beaches, charming little towns, up-country hikes, or... perfect for just relaxing right there. There is a gorgeous view from the porch. The plantings around the cottage are lovely. The interior is charming... Barbara and Hank have done a great job making sure that guests have everything they could possibly need. It was hard to leave, but we're already looking forward to our next visit!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We've stayed at the adorable Ho'okipa Bay View Cottage with its secluded gardens for two glorious weeks and loved it so much that we stayed there again the following year. We love to windsurf and staying on the North Shore of Maui was a must for us. We found the cottage just as beautiful and our stay just as enjoyable on our second visit. The cottage is immaculate, beautifully furnished and very well maintained and the view of the Ocean across Maui's pineapple fields is spectacular. Hank & Barbara thought of everything to ensure our stay was comfortable, and we most definitely recommend staying in this secluded, romantic cottage in Haiku. We loved the cottage and its location in Haiku so much that it resulted in us buying property very close by and have now built our own home there..
