Location: Hilo, Hilo District, Big Island, Hawaii, USA (Hilo Airport 17 miles; Volcanoes Nat'l Park, 45 minutes)

Accommodations:  House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4)

Hale Lavalava at Paradise Glen is an incredible, one-of-a-kind, executive-style 2 bedroom, 2 bath house in a coveted oceanside area near Hilo.

This gorgeous zen-like one-story home has all the cosmic bells and whistles and then some. The home has a big ocean view filled with blue, a lovely tiled lanai from which to watch the sunrise, a gorgeous blue-tiled saline (no chemicals) pool, hot tub, huge spa-like bathtub, two walk-in showers with dual heads, and a gorgeous kitchen with granite countertops and custom cabinets, The property is wheelchair friendly (please contact us to discuss acessibility issues before booking).

The ocean view from the living room and the lanai is spectacular. The ocean bluff is about 400 feet directly ahead. (No ocean entry from this location).

The master bedroom is well-appointed, with a very comfortable California king bed from which you have an ocean view during the day. The master bedroom has its own bathroom and fully tiled walk-in shower, big enough for two.

The guest bedroom has a television, and a plush and comfortable queen sized bed. The guest bathroom is in the hallway adjacent to the guest bedroom. The guest bathroom is cheerful, bright and beachy with a huge walk-in shower with three showerheads.

There is a detached "pool room" that has its own spa-like bathtub (note: there is no restroom in the detached bedroom --both bathrooms are in the main house). There is a washer/dryer in the pool room.

The pool area is fully landscaped with swaying, rustling areca palms that protect your privacy and remind you at every moment you are in the tropics. The in-ground pool is crowned by a beautiful sculpture of three dolphins. This mirthful trio spouts rainwater into the pool, which is crystal clear and purified by frequent filtering and saline treatments expertly applied. The dolphin theme is continued in tile on the bottom of the pool. The patio has a grassy area, a BBQ area and a table with four chairs, for outside dining.

The house is notable for its unique asian/polynesian architecture, its wonderful spirit, and its sense of privacy, peace and joyous tranquility.

Hale Lavalava is situated on a fully landscaped half-acre with an impossibly bright green lawn flanked by a large, shimmering black lava formation, created by nature hundreds of years ago. On the premises you will find a mango tree, and many banana trees, as well as a pineapple or two and beautiful palms. You can hear whale songs on occasion in the winter, and, if you are attentive, may even spot a whale or two. The ocean is a palette of ever-changing hues throughout the day and throughout the year, from brooding gray to stunning cobalt blue. The house and the land have a tremendous energy. It is a great place to find yourself, to renew yourself, to pursue your dreams, to renew friendships, or to get away from the workaday world. You will leave revitalized and refreshed.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2007

Welcome to Hawaii, the Big Island and to Hale Lavalava! The word "lavalava" refers to a type of sarong and the word "Hale" (pronounced "hal-lay") means house. I named my getaway Hale Lavalava because when you are there, you may want to wear a sarong and leave your mainland clothes packed. And, of course, "lavalava" has a double meaning as the front yard of the house has an enormous lava feature from when Kilauea inundated the area several hundred years ago. That lava feature is emulated in the patio, which is ringed with a simulated lava flow. I acquired Hale Lavalava in 2007 with the goal of retiring there someday. In the interim, it is my pleasure to share the home with people who wished to be immersed in beauty and relative luxury as they explore the most dynamic and diverse of all of the Hawaiian islands. Glen

Why the Owner Chose Hilo

I chose Hale Lavalava because it is close to Hawaii's second largest city, Hilo, while providing the feeling of being faraway from the hustle and bustle, at the ends of the earth. I also chose it because it has it all: pool, spa, big oceanview, nice landscaping and a palpable feeling of peace and tranquility.

The Unique Benefits of this House

Hale Lavalava has an oceanview that does not quite come across in pictures. It is big, bold and colorful. It is a delight to sip your Kona coffee (or Puna Coffee, such as Sharkey's brand!) on the lanai. Hale Lavalava also has several ways to get delightfully wet. First, there is the gorgeous, saline pool. It feels like silk. In the evening or in the rain, you can step into the warm spa which is nestled in a small jungle. Third, indoors, both showers are large double showers, perfect for two.

Another wonderful feature of Hale Lavalava is the very walkable lane in front of the house. It goes for about a mile along the oceanside and is a lovely place for a morning walk.

Hale Lavalava is close to Hilo, Volcanoes National Park, and the hot ponds and black sand beaches of Lower Puna, while providing privacy, a degree of seclusion and amenities that make it a destination onto itself. You can be as active as you wish, or simply be very still and relocate the self that somehow went missing while you were doing other things.

    • We stayed Hale Lavalava recently. Beautiful home. Photos do not do the home justice! Wonderful views of the ocean from the front porch. Private back with wonderful pool and hot tub. Far more relaxing than a hotel or a condo! We truly enjoyed our stay and would visit again.

    • Hale Lavalava was fabulous in every way. Not only are the house and grounds much nicer than most vacation rentals, but that gorgeous ocean view from the lanai--I gazed out at it every morning while having my Kona coffee. Loved the salt water pool too, in which I swam every afternoon. This house is perfect if you want to hang out and feel like you're at a resort or as a great base from which to explore the Big Island. I've told friends and I'll definitely go back--every year!

Your home is so beautiful -- every detail is so extraordinary and planned for comfort and enjoyment. I loved sitting out in front in the early morning, listening to the bird chorus and watching the ocean.
