Kohala Ranch house description
Luxury lives here ...
Kohala Ranch is a 4,000 acre gated ranch on the famed Kohala 'Gold' Coast running west to east from the ocean to a 3,000' elevation and encompassing three very different climate zones
- the Heathers (app. 200'-800'elevation)- warm, sunny, and dry
- the Meadows (app. 900'-1,800' elevation) - cooler, more rain, more windy
- the Summit (app. 1,700' - 3,000' elevation)- colder, most rain, strongest winds
Laughing Gecko Lodge is perfectly located in the most desirable Heathers at 750' and offers the ideal climate if your idea of a Hawaiian vacation includes sunny skies, hot dry days and clear, comfortable starry nights. The weather in the Heathers is a predictable 80 degrees and sunny year round. Annual rainfall is app. 7 inches. (Travel tip - check the location of your rental because at times some Ranch locations can seem more like temperate Europe than tropical Hawaii!)
Tucked at the top of a quiet cul-de-sac on 3.5 acres in a premiere location, Laughing Gecko Lodge is the perfect place for vacations, corporate retreats, small celebrations, or simply getting away from it all. The vistas from the main living areas and lanais feature open ranch land, coastline, ocean and mountains, offering complete privacy. And the views? Spectacular!
The location is quiet, without the traffic noise of homes closer to the highway, and offers exceptional views of the Kohala & Kona coastlines, ocean and all Big Island mountains. Guests often say photos can't capture the incredible views and do the property justice. Enjoy the tranquility of the home to relax, and if you are looking for excitement or activities they are all just minutes away. The ocean is about a mile from the house and Big Island's best beaches, world class golfing, resorts, premiere shopping and dining, theater and entertainment are approximately 5 - 10 minutes by car.
This 4 bedroom home is flexible, accommodating two to eight people in individual suites. The floor-plan offers excellent separation of space between the bedrooms allowing privacy and the ability to welcome smaller or larger groups. The home is only rented to one guest party at a time so, even if you are a couple looking for a quiet getaway and only renting the main house, the entire property is still all yours. The home is designed as follows.
1.) The main house offers 1,700 sf of tropical living and has a great-room with gourmet kitchen & pantry, dining and living areas and a large master suite (bed & bath I), half bath, lanai & pool.
2.) The upper guest suite is on the same level as the main house and consists of a master suite (bed & bath II).
Both the main house and upper guest suite overlook the pool and spectacular ocean and mountain views.
3.) The lower guest suites are a flight lower and there are two large bedrooms (bedrooms III & IV) with a pass-through bathroom, private lanai, mini-kitchen and outstanding ocean and mountain views.
The home may be rented dependent on the size of your group and the rate varies accordingly. Our goal is to exceed your expectations and offer true value so you can enjoy your hard earned vacation.
If you are a couple looking for a romantic getaway set apart from the hustle and bustle of resort locations consider renting the main house. The resorts are just moments away and all amenities are available to you without paying the resort price tag. Inviting another couple along? Rent the main house and upper guest suite. Bringing the whole family? Rent the whole house. This is a single home and only one booking is reserved at a time irrespective of size. You will never share with anyone else.
Please note, occupancy of the home is limited to the the rental group only and the home is not intended for use as an event space for reunions, weddings, group entertaining, parties, etc..
All sections of the home are designer furnished and exquisitely equipped and all necessary items are provided including luxury linens, toiletries, condiments, laundry supplies, beach chairs & toys, books, DVDs, and peace & quiet. The tranquility of the property is just moments away from all the recreation and fun you could want. There are multiple seating areas on the huge lanai, a 40ft pool, outdoor dining table for 10 and a commercial gas BBQ. Even with a full house there is enough space for everyone to find a place of their own.
Laughing Gecko Lodge is a well located gorgeous home where you can relax, explore, and enjoy a memorable stay. The times we spend in places like this offer a lifetime of memories and we want yours to be extra special. We are on-island and available at a moments notice to assist you if needed. However, we respect your privacy and will be invisible if not needed. With any home rental ongoing maintenance of pool and yard may necessitate service providers being on property during your stay. We do our best to ensure all appliances are in working order but should a system fail and repair be needed during your stay such service providers may need access.
Many of our guests love Laughing Gecko Lodge so much they come again and several have confessed it is the best vacation rental they have ever stayed in.

WONDERFUL!! TWO WEEKS IN HEAVEN....
WONDERFUL!! TWO WEEKS IN HEAVEN....
We are very familiar with the big island so we knew that from airport to Kohala coast was going to be at least 45-50 minutes, we stopped at COSTCO and loaded up on wine, beer, bread, etc. so that we wouldn't have to pay exorbitant resort grocery prices at Waikoloa Beach Queens shops or mauna lani grocery stores! (Or, get your groceries after settled in at Waikoloa Village or Waimea) We were amazed to arrive and find lots of the basics (oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, spices, laundry detergent, soaps, lotions, sun screen, bug screen, all pool and beach supplies including noodles, snorkels, mats, chairs and coolers) already there and a sub-Zero fridge PLUS bonus full size extra refrigerator in the garage! Let me list the spectaculars: View, Cleanliness, furnishings, decor, library of books and DVDs, walk in closet, open tile shower with dual heads, butlers pantry (with every conceivable pot, pan, dish, plate etc, one could imagine!), walk in closet, and did I mention the VIEW???? Truly an amazing spot. We used the two Master suites and we loved this home! DO NOTE: If your interests and activities planned are in Kona it is an hour to Kona. We combined our plans & errands and made three long trips to Kona in our two weeks. The rest of visit we arranged to stay in "our area" Kawaihae, Waimea, Waikoloa, Hapuna and Hawi. Some of the best places on the island! Highly recommend: Local restaurants: Plantation Grill, Seafood Bar (dinners) and slightly farther: Bamboo restaurant in Hawi and Lava Lava Beach club (lunch and/or dinner). We loved this place.....

Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. Everything is green from the rain right now - it is winter - and it's a lovely change because we are used to seeing it all brown. The grasses are flowering and look so pretty. I actually just bought a brand new fridge/freezer, TV for the master, and new cooking knives that are super sharp. I love to cook, and that's why the kitchen and pantry are so well stocked. I don't like staying somewhere and finding I can't make a great meal because there are only a couple plates, a few pots and not a decent knife anywhere..... aloha, ali

Beautiful and the views are amazing!
Hi Ali, We are just getting settled back in here in Texas. I just wanted to let you know that Carrie and I truly enjoyed staying at your house in Kohala Ranch earlier this month. We loved the Kohala Ranch area on the Big Island. Your house is very beautiful and adorned with incredible artwork. And, of course, the views are amazing! We did manage to have breakfast and dinner on the lanai most of the time, so we could enjoy the views and peaceful surroundings. Everything was perfect. We did our best to visit many of the sites on the Big Island during our stay, but really needed a few more days to explore some other areas. We look forward to visiting again in the future. Thanks again for making our trip a memorable one! Sincerely, Bob

Sixteen days in this beautiful home was not enough. Everything from the tasteful decor, varied library, well-stocked kitchen, stunning views, and pristine landscaping was exactly as stated and more. Ali is a kind and gracious host, and her attention to detail is reflected throughout the property. I cannot imagine why anyone would choose to stay in a hotel when they could be in this lovely, serene paradise. My husband and I have been to the Big Island many times. This was our best trip yet. Mahalo nui loa, Ali!

Owner response: Goodness! Thank you for your kind words. It is high praise indeed to know you had your best trip ever in this lovely location. Makes me very happy. Right now the weather is spectacular; calm and clear with electric blue ocean, surf, and whales jumping around everywhere. It's stunning. The grass is turning green as we had a few overnight showers (a blessing here) and everything is bursting with the joys of Spring. You must return. Aloha, ali
Peace in Paradise
Peace in Paradise
We loved our time at this wonderful property - 12 days and they ended too soon. Next time we are staying longer! We were afraid we would be too far away from Kona - but in fact - we went into Kona only once after the first stop at Costco on our arrival - and quickly headed right back up to the Kohala Coast. We LOVED the access to the best beaches and wonderful restaurants. This home offers exceptionally comfort. The kitchen was amazingly well equipped. A couple of things need some fixing - but this didn't impact our enjoyment at all. Everything we needed and some. Thank you Ali - for sharing your home with us.

Owner response: Thank you. So glad you had such a blissful break. As this home is so popular and we run full there isn't always time between changes to do instant repairs. For example on the day you arrived the departing guest called me from the airport to say the lock on the master door had broken when they tried to secure it on departure. Yikes. No time to source a replacement and have it installed in a 3 hour period. Screens take a hammering, especially when young children are in the house. It's a gorgeous day today and such a nice day to end your vacation on, after our very few days of rain. I love the rain, because it is so rare, and I'm sorry you won't get to see the grass turn green. The Francolin will be very happy.

Aloha Ali, I just saw that horrid review of your house on VBRO. My initial reaction was “that’s not the house we stayed in”. Upon re-reading, and seeing your response, I can’t help but wonder if the guest had some other issue unrelated to your house. To call it a “ghetto” and compare it to homes in Puna is lunacy. We’ve stayed at your house, as well as Nesbitt’s Kohala Ranch house, and these homes are beautiful. We just wanted to tell you how much we enjoy your home! We are pleased that we turned down the offer to stay further down the hill. As Sharon mentioned when she spoke with you on Thursday, you’ve done some wonderful things with the house since we stayed with you last. She is far more attuned to ‘decorating’ than I, but I noticed how much landscaping you’ve done. We’ll be (sadly) leaving Laughing Gecko at 6pm today. Before we depart we wanted to thank you for allowing us to rent your wonderful home. We’ve rented many places on the Big Island and on Kauai and yours is clearly the best. We even prefer it to beach-front houses we’ve rented. As I mentioned to you, you’ve done a wonderful job in choosing interior paint colors that just bring your home to life. Well done! Not to mention a lot of landscaping which will only make your place more lush and beautiful as time goes by. Mahalo and you can be sure that when we return to the Big Island again that we will be in touch to rent your gorgeous home.

We stayed at Laughing Gecko for 5 nights in March. The house is nicely decorated and outfitted well in the kitchen. The beds are comfortable and the views are stunning. We had excellent internet access. Sadly, that's where this review takes a turn. There is a BIG manual of all expectations owner has of renters. Seems to think when you stay there, she is doing you a favor. The manual states to call her immediately if anything needs repairs. Ok, so the first night when going to take a shower in master bathroom, it broke. Called owner immediately. She let me know it was an expensive part and said she didn't know how I managed to break it!!!(screw had fallen inside the mechanism!) Recommended I find another place to rent and said she'd be happy to refund my money (hmmm. . . see deposit info below). I let her know I was on vacation and not investing time to look for another place to be, just wanted the shower fixed. She personally came to fix the next afternoon (and seemed to have lots of knowledge of the inner workings of the shower?). She was NOT very friendly. When she came to fix shower, she let me know we had left a light on on entryway and suggested we shut it off. OK!!! Welcome to her home! When I mentioned the pool was filled with debris and the pool cleaner was in it and full, she condescendingly let me know that she had been there that morning and the pool had been clear and just to wait for the gadget to clean it overnight. The gadget was already filled to the brim at 4pm. She sent a poolman the next morning to clean the gadget out. Each day this gadget runs from 10-12am (not overnight, as one expected!). It is more like a lap pool with no room to swim, but you can wade around the pool cleaner. Lots of items in the house need repair. Bunji cords holding convection oven up. Opened kitchen drawers to have them break off in our hand (guess we just have the midas touch (lol!). After the "didn't know how I managed to break the shower" comment, didn't want to bother her with all items that needed care. We left the place spotless and it took her 10 weeks to return our deposit (myriad of excuses, but finally received). Not much aloha and a lot of snobby attitude! BTW, we noted that whenever people posted a negative comment, owner posts a terse reply and then posts a few comments she received by other renters until negative reviews disappear.

Owner response: I inspected just before check in and all was perfect. The Trades came up just before you arrived and blew leaves in the pool. You called and told me the pool was trashed, there was broken junk in it, and the property was ghetto. The trash was leaves, the junk a new pool vacuum, and the ghetto a luxury estate. As you were disappointed I offered a full refund. Next day you called and told me there was no water in the bathroom. There was. The shower control had come loose and it was fixed immediately. On my arrival at noon I found every light interior and exterior on and asked that they be turned off. You told me you stayed in Puna for the same price. Good point. We rent a luxury estate in a gated community on the premiere Gold Coast for the same price as a home in the highest crime area and high risk lava zone with no beaches. Hence our description, affordable luxury. Thank you for leaving our home in good shape as sometimes guests do not. We regret you found our accommodation to be ghetto.

My wife and I have vacationed in Kohala Ranch VRBOs three times now, staying the past two times here at Laughing Gecko. We love this place, the pictures are true to form, the place is a great value! We especially appreciated the well equipped kitchen. And, the sunsets! We sat on the lanai and watched every sunset! We We will use this VRBO again and recommend it highly.

About the owner: Ali Blackmore is a Zimbabwean who has traveled the globe, living in eight different countries over four continents. Dual careers in real estate and design have traveled with her and continue on Big Island, Hawaii where she works in real estate & design specializing in Kohala Coast property. A lifelong real estate investor, Ali knows a good property when she sees one and bought Laughing Gecko Lodge because it is one of the all-round best view lots and locations in the Heathers at Kohala Ranch. If you are visiting Big Island to look at or buy property Ali would be delighted to assist you with your search and purchase.
Why the Owner Chose Kohala Ranch:
I grew up on a 2,500 acre ranch in Zimbabwe and when I came to Hawaii and Kohala Ranch I found a place that was so strikingly similar to my 'home' and fell in love with the area. The location struck an emotional chord and met a career goal at the same time. Quite simply, the Kohala Coast is the most popular place to vacation on Big Island and the Heathers at Kohala Ranch is one of the nicest spots to rent a vacation home. Being here is like being 'home' for me. Guests love the house and the views and I love sharing this beautiful place with them.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
One of the best aspects of renting this particular home, especially for couples, is the affordability. Due to the nature of the design the home can be divided and rented to couples or groups of up to 8 and pricing is adjusted accordingly. For couples this means paying just for two, but enjoying all the benefits of the entire property without the cost. It's a perfect place for enjoying your vacation; quiet, private, beautifully designed and appointed, and with exceptional views. Located just minutes from beaches, golf, dining and shopping, all a holiday-maker needs is close at hand but can seem a world away when it's time to relax and get away from it all. Often when guests settle in to the outdoor living room on the lanai and look at the view they never want to leave or do anything. Yes, it really is that spectacular!
