Bad start to a good holiday (ironic)

The “Best house in Buzios” is far from it. To be fair, the property is in a great location but is a horribly maintained property with a “less than scrupulous” owner. This started off as being the worst holiday nightmare for my family and I, which culminated with us leaving the property within 18 hours of our arrival, ultimately seeking alternative accommodation for the remainder of our holiday. The agreement was to pay a 50% deposit prior to our arrival and the 50% balance upon arrival & satisfaction of the property and its amenities. Before we even landed in Rio de Janeiro (3.5 hour drive away during this season – owner told us it was 90 minute drive), the property owner tried charging my credit card for the 50% balance of which raised suspicion since that was contrary to our contract. This behaviour was indicative of the owner’s ethics in this transaction. In summary, a great location in a quaint town, badly maintained property and absentee owner with less than ethical standards in transacting. • The exterior of the property was very unkempt, with high grass and badly in need of tiding up and some paint • The upstairs master bedroom was completely uninhabitable, as a plumbing issue had occurred within 48 hours of our visit, and had caused several problems within the upstairs bath and bedrooms areas, as well as water damage for some of the downstairs areas- this made the entire upstairs a no-go zone • Extensive water damage on one of the walls which was above the dining area and extended into the main sitting area • The kitchen, as well as much of the house, has the smell of lack of cleaning combined with overexposure to moisture –especially prominent in the kitchen, lounge area and main sitting area of the main floor • The refrigerator was inoperable and the alternative one, to put it mildly, has seen a few years and needed thorough cleaning, no crib though advert mentions one and owner knew about our two toddlers • The 'headboard' of the second bedroom was made of cotton curtaining that was infested with bugs to the extent that when we were forced to sleep in the bedroom, we actually took the 'head board' down so that we wouldn't have to sleep under it • This same second master bedroom had mould throughout the skirting of the room, some of which was located directly under and adjacent to the bed • Besides a gardener and a housekeeper there are more people staying at the property as if they are renting the rooms
