The Artist's Beach House is situated on the Antigonish Harbour just ten minutes from a lovely university town. This quiet retreat feels like it’s worlds away. The house is surrounded by water – on 6 acres of land. The beach goes on forever and is nicely secluded – swimming is excellent in the warmest waters north of the Carolinas. So is canoing and kayaking on the harbour where there’s so much to discover. The grounds are truly spectacular with gardens everywhere including an herb garden for the gourmet. In season, the best lobster in the world can be had fresh off the boats nearby.
This architect designed house is ideal for entertaining with wrap around decks and porches complete with ample outdoor eating areas. Indoors you’ll be greeted with warm cherry wood throughout, walls full of original art, oriental rugs on the floors and sumptuous furnishings everywhere. All the amenities are there to pamper you during your stay. When the nights are cool there’s nothing better than curling up in front of the fireplace with a good book or movie. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, colorful and artistic. The views from every room are spectacular. All of our guests tell us that the photos don’t do it justice. It truly is a beautiful place!

We were thrilled with the Artists Cottage in Antigonish. The "cottage" was more than we could have asked for - awesome decor, clean & spacious, lots of extra bedrooms for our visitors, and everything we needed was supplied (except for grocery items). Mrs. Poder was very welcoming and helpful if we needed anthing. The deck overlooking the inlet was large with lots of comfy chairs and tables for outside entertaining. The views from the deck were gorgeous from morning to evening. The lot was huge and beautiful with trees, shrubs, flower beds and easy access to the shore. The cottage was situated in a very private, quite area but we were only 15 minutes from downtown Antigonish where we found several craft shops, boutiques and excellant restaurants to enjoy. As you may have quessed, the only down side of our visit was that we could not stay longer. The other plus is that Antigonish is centrally located for travel along the east coast and Cape Breton Island. I would recommend this vacation property to anyone who wants to experience a perfect vacation by the ocean.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, people with disabilities.

We were looking for a place in Nova Scotia that could house our extended family, including 5 children and a dog. We also wanted a place that was remote and had easy access to the outdoors. Well, this place had it all - space, kayaks, canoe, great yard, beach, etc. The view was spectacular and the accommodations very comfortable. The beds and bedding were some of the most comfortable I have ever stayed in and the upstairs rooms were exceptionally lovely. The wrap-around porch provided a great vantage point from which to watch the wildlife, take in the stunning vistas, and watch the kids and dog play to their hearts content. The kitchen was spacious and well appointed and the owner took care of most every other detail. While we enjoyed sight seeing a lot of what Nova Scotia has to offer, we all looked forward to just hanging out at the house and taking in all it and it's surroundings had to offer. This artist's cottage and Antigonish are a wonderful combination for a memorable experience. If you have a chance, it's definitely worth your while.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, pet owners, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.

We were fortunate enough to stay at this beautiful property for a week this summer. There are so many special things about this property that it is hard to list them all, but I will give a few of the highlights. 1. Tiiu, the owner, is fantastic. She is a kind, gentle, good soul who we instantly felt a great connection with. She is so eager to tell you about her land or about special places in and around Antigonish. 2. All over the property you will find sculptures and benches made of fallen logs. 3. The kitchen is very well equipped and a pleasure to cook in. 4. The house was very clean when we arrived. 5. The bedrooms were all comfortable and well appointed. 6. There were kayaks and canoes at our disposal. We were fortunate enough to see a couple of bald eagles on one of our excursions. 7. There is a HUGE deck that is well equipped with two tables and lots of chairs. 8. There are beautiful woods to be discovered by everyone. There are even paths carefully tended that run through the woods that make exploring that much more fun!! It is hard to do justice to this property. It is meticulously and lovingly maintained. We chose this property based on the reviews and pictures and we were not disappointed. After reading the reviews online and in the guestbook at the house, we realize that we are just one of many who have had a very memorable vacation here. We hope to make it back more than once to this jewel.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, pet owners, families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.
Owner response: You were sadly missed after you left by myself and others..... the early morning hushed tracks of those delightful children is something I will remember forever. Thank you for your kind words!

Our family experienced a fantastic PEI vacation in 2011 so we decided to visit the East Coast again. We spent time searching for another perfect location and discovered Tiiu's place. A grand total of 5 adults and 6 kids had a fantastic week laughing and playing together. Everyone had a cozy bedroom to sleep in after spending hours in the fresh air. We were even able to squeeze in a couple of friends who dropped in to say hi and then stayed overnight. The kids experienced kayaking for the first time in their lives. Being in control of their own 'boat' was quite a thrill. Even the local bald eagle cooperated by allowing us to kayak almost right underneath the tree he was perched on. The kids spent hours inventing games with the toys thoughtfully provided. One particular game of ultimate frisbee that we played on the large grassy yard is still the stuff of family legend. The shoreline shoreline provided us all with the chance to unwind and enjoy nature. Whether just sitting on the benches with our morning coffee or with our afternoon glass of wine, we could watch the kids exploring on their own. Water shoes were even available for those of who didn't bring any. We were nervous about the number of art pieces and the exuberant nature of our children. Our fears were groundless as we played and ate outside for almost every meal - indoor time was almost exclusively for sleeping. It was unique to hear them discussing the pieces amongst themselves. We had a fantastic lobster cookout one night in true East Coast style. We loved eating outside under the covered porch. Not even a rainy night could put a damper on our trip. The picture of the porch with the Muskoka chairs is perfect. It's just like it in real life. Tiiu was available to answer our questions and even took on a personal interest in us. That's a real plus when you're in a new part of the country. We have recommended this place to all of our friends and extended family. It's not often that you can say that that a location can bring families together, but it certainly happened with our 3 families from Montreal and Toronto.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, pet owners, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. We loved meeting your wonderful children and having you all as our guests! Have a great year!

Our stay at this property truly was a slice of heaven. The house is filled with art and the abundance of windows everywhere fills the home with light. The beds were so comfortable as were the couches and other seating. The kitchen was better equipped than my own. My husband and I have fond memories of sitting on the beautiful deck and watching the sparkling ocean below. We didn't want to go home at all! The owner was warm and friendly and very helpful. Our group was able to relax and enjoy the serenity of the location. It was like being in the country, but minutes to the town of Antigonish.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.
Owner response: It's wonderful to have such appreicative and thoughtful guests. Thank you for your kind review! I hope we see you again.

WORST VACATION RENTAL EVER!!!! We rented this house as a base to visit with East Coast family. This is what we experienced: •'.... 5 star hotel' means you should be ok with emptying the outhouse bucket, a full garbage bin, rationing water, washing dishes, using VHS tapes and running into town to buy basic requirements like drinking water and coffee filters. This house was not clean! It came with popcorn, potato chip remnants and dust bunnies under the tables and toast crumbs under the toaster. •'warm and friendly' means the owner lives on the property. She came and went as she pleased - typically, to tell us to not use water as she was not proactive in getting the well refilled from prior tenant's use; •'SLEEPS 10-12' means that the expectation is 6 guests; •'Everything else is there in abundance...' means that there is so much 'stuff' that you will be tripping over yourselves during your stay. We were also expected to return everything to its original place but with so many impractical, illogically placed and inconvenient knick knacks, "objects d'arts" and just plain kitsch, it was really difficult to determine where things were supposed to go; •'Ample RV parking' means you can bring one but you will incur additional charges; •'...connected to technology' means an AM/FM radio, 15 inch tube TV/VHS combo, old selection of movies and no air conditioning or circulation fans. We should have treated this house rental like a car rental - grabbed a pen/paper and gone through the property, the rental contract and the website with a fine-tooth comb. We did not and were blamed for previous tenant's misuse and general property neglect. The owner quickly brushed shortcomings off to '...life in the country....' Unfortunately, these shortcomings include safety issues like no rails on most of the deck, broken chairs/tables, no hand rail on the stairs leading downstairs, unsecured carpets and dirty dishes in the cupboards. We were also blamed for various items like a non-working dishwasher, a broken dryer, patio chairs not returned to their previous place on the deck, brother's RV hook-up, propane tank refill and other things. WORST VACATION RENTAL EVER!!!!Owner response: We only receive rave reviews from our guests some of who return because they love the property so much. Almost all guests are courteous, honest and respect our property. In this case our property was destroyed through carelessness and negligence and these guests only began to complain when the cost of damages were taken from the damage deposit which didn't cover all of the expenses we inclurred. They burnt a fuse in the clothes drier by repeatedly not emptying the lint bin and after one repair the dishwasher had to be completely replaced because it had been so gunged up with food and refuse. Towels were strewn through the gardens, and they threw cutlery and dishes into heaps wherever they pleased. Their many dogs ran amok and tore the screen on the patio door. And they deliberately peeled paint from the outdoor furniture. They even managed to tear holes through the blanket throw on the sofa. In addition to their group of 8 or 10 they brought an extra family of six with more dogs who arrived in a big RV and expected to plug in for free and use all of the facilities and water. I would warn any other owners to beware of this unhappy group. Thankfully guests like this are not the norm.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1998
About the owner: I fell in love with Nova Scotia as an art student in the 1970's. I returned to Ontario to complete my education and life took over and I stayed. In 1994 in a quest for peace and harmony I moved back with my young children. I was so fortunate to discover Antigonish and this magical property that I purchased in 1998. Since then I have been cultivating my friends, my house, a guest cottage where I stay in the summer, and the surrounding gardens. Now that my children are grown I'm delighted to welcome guests from around world to experience what I am lucky enough to enjoy every day.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Being close to nature on the land and in the sea is a privilege that I wouldn't trade for anything. I watch eagles dive for prey from my windows and welcome a pair of great blue herons every spring. The pair of pileated woodpeckers in the forest are a thrill to discover when they allow themselves to be seen. The sounds of the tidal waters are a dream and jumping into them after a day of gardening in the hot sun is about as good as it gets. I visit my friends across the harbour in my canoe and every summer I hear them hollering my name from their sailboat just offshore. As an artist I am most inspired by the profound beauty that surrounds me in my little piece of heaven.
