Windgarth House: on Cayuga Lakefront in Beautiful Setting
- Minimum stay:N/A

Windgarth House is located on the west shore of Cayuga Lake, in the heart of the Finger Lakes Wine Country, across the road from the Sheldrake Point Winery and Cafe. Only 12 miles from Taughannock Falls State Park and 20 miles from Ithaca, it is nestled in a prime location. We rent the top floor or the entirety of this beautiful lakehouse by the week during the summer (late June until Labor Day) or for shorter stays the rest of the year (2 night minimum).
Windgarth House is right on the lake, with only a gently sloping lawn and beautiful gardens with mature shade trees separating the house from the lakefront. There are no stairs and no road between the house and lake, as is common elsewhere on Cayuga Lake. The house is located on a cove near Sheldrake Point. The water is shallow at the shore and gradually becomes deeper along the dock, to about four feet at the end of the dock. It is ideal for wading and swimming for children of all ages and adults. We provide a canoe and kayak, life jackets and other water toys for our guests' use.
The area around Windgarth House is ideal for long walks along the lake and biking. There are many hiking opportunities in the area, including at Taughannock Falls State Park.
If you have a smaller party, contact us for details - you can rent only the upstairs floor for a discounted rate.

My family had a great week at the Windgarth this past July. The location was great and the house was clean and comfortable, It is also in a nice quiet area, and is away from route 89 - the main road that is on the west side of Cayuga Lake. The gentle sloping yard was very nice as other houses on the finger lakes either have no backyards or the slope down to the water or to the house itself is too steep. We rented the entire house as our adult children met us there for a few days during the week. We were all very comfortable. It is also very close to several wineries. We were very happy with the Windgarth and look forward to renting every year the 2nd week of July. The owners of the house are very nice people, and our security deposit was promptly returned after our rental. I just hope that no one tries to book the 2nd week in July since that's the week we want o stay at the Windgarth.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.

My first review on anything – (ever.) I really wanted to comment on this vacation home. I stayed here a few years ago and came back for another stay this year. Location … ideal. Located on Cayuga Lake across from Sheldrake Winery. A few restaurants/bars down the street. Tons of wineries in the area and 15 minutes from Seneca Lake with more wineries, restaurants, and activities. Close to Ithaca as well. Outside Property … lovely. The grounds are meticulous with a flower/vegetable garden, benches/table, and boating equipment to take out on the lake. Inside the House … charming. It is superbly clean and nicely decorated. It is spacious and includes some basic items for your stay. Nothing like sitting around one of the tables at night with family/friends. Owners … accommodating. They are extremely helpful and prompt. Their care for the home is evident throughout. They leave instructions for you in the house and a guide to the area. Thank you for sharing your home. Simply, the Windgarth Home is perfect for a vacation or weekend getaway!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

You can't beat this cottage for a family retreat. We had six adults and two children, and there was plenty of room for everybody. Upstairs AND downstairs kitchens means plenty of room to prepare and store food, and to clean up after meals. The windows let in lots of light and fresh breezes, and views of the yard flowers and the lake. The charcoal grille works fine, and the old locusts provide shade for eating on the picnic table between the house and the lake. The kids caught nearly a dozen fish off the dock--sunfish mostly, and a couple stripers. And they had a ball paddling in the canoe and kayak. No need to go anywhere to keep them occupied! The house is in is a very pleasant small lakeside community far enough from Ithaca that there's hardly any traffic to worry about. Just don't come with a strict agenda! There's a nice pub within a couple miles, and a winery and vineyard across the road. The Seneca Lake wineries are within a half hour's drive to the southwest, and if you bring bikes the pavement is smooth right out the door. It would be hard to find a better place to turn off the cell phone and relax for a few days.Recommended for: Families with young children, adventure seekers.

Windgarth House was a charming place. Its location on the lake was perfect. It afforded our family the opportunity to be together for our son's graduation. It was so nice to have a barbecue, play ball on the grass, go out in the row boats and just enjoy the beauty of the lake. We only wish we had had more time to truly enjoy this unique location and all the amenities it has to offer. Thanks for enhancing all the great memories we will treasure of this graduation and family weekend!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Staying at Windgarth is a true escape from reality! The lake is so peaceful and soul-soothing. The location is superb -- only 20 minutes or so from Ithaca (if you're looking for a little bit of "noise") and up and down the road from numerous wineries (in case they're not close enough, there's one across the street!). The house is well-equipped and extremely comfortable. I think I left a piece of myself at Windgarth -- oh, dear, I will just have to go back again to retrieve it!Did you find this review helpful? the week we spent at windgarth was sweet and as close to idyllic as it gets! the house is comfortable and well equipped, the grounds and gardens, beautiful, the lake, magnificent, and the sunrises and moonrises spectacular! the small communuity of sheldrake is quiet and lovely, affording long walks in pleasant surroundings. and to have a vineyard with a great restaurant directly across the street was an added bonus, for those nights when one just didn't want to cook.Did you find this review helpful?
