Unbelievably Beautiful

To be able to accurately describe the beauty, personality, and charm of Toogoodoo Bluff is, unfortunately, beyond my ability. The houses, due to detailed decoration and time and thought given, feel as if you have been invited to someone's much loved and celebrated home. The land, trees, flowers, water, yard, and marshlands are such main characters and an overall part of the Toogoodoo Bluff experience. A total escape from everyday life, and perfect opportunity to enjoy the company of loved ones in the ideal environment. My love for Toogoodoo is so grand, I have chosen to be married there. My fiance and I realized we would rather opt to have a rather small wedding, instead of a large celebration, in order we may be married in a place we so closely associate with charm, home, and beauty. It is simply a place which allows you the freedom to read lounging in the sun, sit on the porch in a rocking chair with sweet tea (or beer!) chatting with family, gathering around a campfire with friends, kayaking along tidal creeks, watching dolphins travel to the sea, encounter a beautiful, beautiful sunset, lazily nap on the hammock looking-out over the water, and remind ourselves that life is often rather wonderful if you simply sit for a moment; all the details and complaints will disappear if you let yourself appreciate the beauty Toogoodoo Bluff has to offer. It allows you to let go. A gift, really. Again, I am joyfully awaiting my wedding, as I know all our guests, traveling all the way from England, Spain, and California, will feel all at once at home when celebrating at Toogoodoo. It truly is THAT magical of a place. I miss it already!

I was inspired to write this review after reading the negative feedback recently posted. We spent a week here with another family and had the most enjoyable time ever! Unlike other recent tenants, we found the compound to be absolutely beautiful, the furnishings eclectic and fun and the owner to be VERY hospitable. Although we never had the pleasure of acutally meeting him, we spoke many times and he was very attentive to our needs - even telling me where to find the "secret key" to the closet that held all the extra towels (thanks)! While nothing in life is EVER perfect, we found every inch of Toogoodoo Bluff to be magnificent! Perhaps some are just not accustomed to the tidal lifestyle ;) We felt very welcomed by the owner and so comfortable settling into this gem of a plantation home. THANK YOU FOR AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE! By the way, we're looking at maybe visiting Sullivan's next April 7 - 14th! :)
Owner response:It was so wonderful to get this totally unsolicited response from Kathy. While I wasn't able to make her during their visit as I usually try to do (compound is 50 minutes from my home), I really appreciate her support and comments. I also have a great beachfront cottage apartment on Sullivan's Island that she refers to in her comments. It, too, is a haven for people that love history, incredible views and the opposite of cookie-cutter resorts (vrbo 181347, Homeaway 187384).

Heaven on Earth

A little piece of heaven right here on earth! We enjoyed our stay more than you'll ever know. We had family in and out over several days for Frank's 60th birthday. This is truly the place to get away from it all...the sunrises, the sunsets and everything in between was perfect. Thank you for knowing what families need to unwind and reconnect. We loved our stay at Toogoodoo and none of us wanted to leave!
Owner response:Thanks to Frank and Karen for the kind words. They and their family were a really nice group and I'm glad the visit went well. I look forward to seeing them again whether at Toogoodoo Bluff or my beach cottage on Sullivan's Island.

Disappointed

We were very disappointed in our stay at this compound. The dock was great. The houses are very old and we had trouble with mice, spiders, and huge roaches. Homes are not well maintained and were not very clean. There were dead bugs and mice droppings everywhere. The water had an odor and it turned our fingernails and toenails orange. My husband had to climb on top of the home and clean out the dryer vent as it was plugged and we went to Walmart and bought new air filters for the air conditioners as they were also plugged. I felt like I was camping in the wilderness the whole week and for what we paid it should have been luxurious. So disappointed.
Owner response: After having always received 5-star reviews, I was shocked to receive such a scathing and somewhat mean-spirited review. I work hard to provide my guests with a well-maintained and clean property that is extremely nice and well-appointed. While I usually always do an inspection before my guests check-in, I was unable to do so that Saturday due to the sudden death of my mother in NC on Friday. I did have my regular housekeeper assure me that the house was perfect. I called to check on my guests and explain of my situation. I was told of no problems or complaints during the call. I also have my cell number prominently posted in case of any issues, but received no calls. Upon arriving back to Charleston on Monday, I drove out to Toogoodoo Bluff to meet my guests as I often do. The only complaint I received was that it had rained each afternoon. They did say that one of their husbands had noticed that one of the AC filters was dirty and they had picked up one when they were in town. It was presented as "no big deal" and I more than compensated them for the filter. If I had been told of any problems, I would have worked to resolve them immediately. As for the individual listed issues, I have no idea as to their validity as there has been no evidence or reports from other guests of the problems since their departure. In Charleston, we take pride in our manners, politeness and respect and I find it very concerning that a guest would not give me the respect of addressing any complaints but would then post a long lists of complaints in a public forum.

Our family visited the Charleston area for a wedding. We had 16 people stay thru out the week and we had plenty of time to be together or to have some alone time. The accommodations we wonderful, we truly felt like we were at home. The owner had the place well prepared for our large group. Wonderful time had by all.
Owner response:Kind comments from a great group of snowbirds seeking refuge, fun and fellowship. I love seeing families and friends coming together and spending old-fashioned quality time together at Toogoodoo Bluff.

Just spent an amazing week on this property! The pictures can not possibly show how beautiful it is! The house cabin and cottage are absolutly amazing but at the same time, comfortable and relaxing. It's the perfect place for relaxing and reconnecting with family or friends. Sitting in rocking chairs on the porch or dock in the morning and listening to the birds while watching the sun rise or listening to crickets and watching the fireflys come out after a beautiful sunset was a spiritual experience. There was so much to do nearby but we found ourselves not wanting to leave. It's a great place to get together but the layout also allows plenty of privacy. It felt like we had our own private resort. We left with may special memories and I would definitely recommend it!

Visiting Toogoodoo Bluff is like stepping back in time. All your big city stresses melt away as you look thru the long center hall to the expansive front porch overlooking the beautiful Toogoodoo River. Everything has been updated just enough to give you the modern conveniences you are used to but left decorated from another simplier time. Great place for family get togethers or couples who want to escape to a quieter place. We can't wait to get back down to Toogoodoo to kayak, fish, go crabbing, prepare special meals or just sit on the porch or lay in the hammock and enjoy the peace and quiet. I highly recommend a visit to Toogoodoo. You will start planning your return before you ever leave.

I have had the pleasure of staying at this site twice now, and I think it is one of the best kept secrets that SC continues to hide. The privacy of the unit along with the tasteful furnishings and access to the water make this a place we hated to leave. The owners were very user friendly, and went out of their way to make sure our stay at Toogoodoo was what we expected. They even had firewood ready for the fireplaces in case the air turned chillly. We really enjoyed our stay and look forward to the next time we are in SC so we can stay here again. Feel free to give me a call if I can answer any questions regarding our stay. Bob Barden

This is one of the prettiest places on the planet. From the time you enter the gated and fenced yard to the time you sit on the dock, you will be overwhelmed with beauty and stillness. If you listen long enough you can hear the cows grazing and mooing across the creek and marsh....it's a very nice time away from it all. Make a short trip to a great seafood market around the corner on the way to Edisto if you need more than you can catch off of the dock.

My time at Toogoodoo was such an amazing experience. Waking up to the beautiful sunrises and hearing the birds really starts your day off on the right foot! The toogoodoo river was ideal for many hours of kayaking and really provided a peaceful environment. I found myself the most relaxed I have been in years. Cooking dinner was a breeze in the kitchen, and I loved being able to have a fire burning in the fireplace while I was cooking. It gave everything a new flavor! I would suggest this place to anyone. There is no doubt in my mind you will agree that you have never stayed anywhere this tranquil, this relaxing, or this amazing in your life. Without a doubt, Toogoodoo is the perfect place to reunite your family and reconnect with your kids! We sure did!
