Though I am concerned about the severe lack of rain, I must admit that this weekend was gorgeous! The ocean was spectacular, the swell big, the air warm and clear, just the drive up the coast was wonderful. I can never tire of the beauty of this stretch of the coast – beauty that never fades and changes with the seasons.
Our house in Enchanted Meadows (that is the actual name of the area, you couldn’t make it up!) in Anchor Bay, California is the perfect place for a couple or a small group of family or friends to get away for a few days. It sits on top a hill along famous Highway 1 on the coast.
Because Enchanted Meadows is located in the so called banana belt, the weather is warm and sunny even if much of the coast is covered in fog. The main house has a living room and dining room with hardwood floors, a fully equipped kitchen, one bedroom, a large newly remodeled bathroom with floor heating and a huge deck around the house. Two additional buildings serve as two more bedrooms, one with a bathroom.
The house sits in a Redwood forest with a partial blue water ocean view. You can hear the waves and sea lions from the house. The setting is very private, calm and romantic. The deck and garden are perfect for hottubbing, relaxing, sunbathing, enjoying meals or watching the local wildlife. You will most likely meet the local bevy of quail, watch the hummingbirds dart around the garden, hear the ravens in the trees, see the chipmunks and squirrels and maybe get a glimpse of a deer.
One of the most wonderful features of the house is the light. In the morning the whole house is flooded with warm morning light. Watching the full moon from the hot tub on the deck or through the windows inside the house travel across the night sky is spectacular. And without the moon, the sky is exploding with stars and planets, an amazing experience from the comfort of the hot tub. For city dwellers the lack of light pollution is awe-inspiring.
In the winter, the wood burning stove in the living room will keep you warm and cozy.
Though you feel like you are away from it all, you are very close to civilization. Anchor Bay is just 5 minutes down the hill and offers a supermarket and two restaurants. Gualala is about 10 minutes to the South and offers a wide variety of restaurants, two supermarkets, a post office, gas stations, gift shops and live music. Gualala is about 10 miles north of Sea Ranch, Sonoma County.
The spectacular Mendocino coast and its beautiful beaches are a great place to explore, hike, fish, dive and surf.
Our house is a short drive to the Point Arena Cove and the Point Arena Lighthouse which offers some of the best whale watching on the entire West coast.

Such a fantastic way to end this year. Your home was so welcoming and had our two favorite things - ocean view (Jill) am Redwood trees (David). Oh - and - star gazing from the hot tub! Thank you for opening your home to others so we can share in the splendor of the coast. Loved walking along the hiking path in Gualala & Sea Ranch and driving off to Fort Bragg another day. Christmas is the best time to be here because no one else is! Pure solitude and HWY 1 to ourselves. Happy Holidays & New Year! Jill & David, Berkeley

Your house lived up to our expectations + more. A perfect place to spend out 13th wedding anniversary... Favorite moments: watching the turkey vultures + cheeky hummingbirds while enjoying fresh local bread on your deck, hot + soothing soaks in your steaming hot tub, and lying on our backs on the deck staring up at the amazingly clear + starry night. Thanks for a lovely time - your house is beautifully serene + tastefully decorated. Nothing Lacking. Steph + AJ, San Francisco

Scheming Ways For Us To Move Up Here

We couldn't have asked for anything more, the house and area around here are perfect. Oysters from Tomales Bay, steaks from the local cows, snapper straight from the boat, cheese from a tiny dairy hidden in the hills...I could go on and on about how awesome our stay was, but I think the fact that after the first day we were scheming ways for us to move up here says it all. Thank you for sharing a piece of the good life with us !!! Gerald + Tran, Los Angeles

This is one of our favorite vacation locations. The house has an amazing feel and you are relaxed as soon as you walk in. We have been twice, once with good weather and the other time, not so good. The fog was a drizzle but the deck was still warm. The instructions on using the fireplace are superb! The bed is very comfortable as well. The owner has great communication and we will return again and again!

Enchanted Meadows is truly an enchanted place

Enchanted Meadows is truly an enchanted place. So much so that I proposed to my soul mate there! We had stayed once before on Valentine’s Day and we were made to feel so welcome the moment we walked in. So 6 months later, on our anniversary, it was the place I chose to propose. The deck overlooking the Pacific is so peaceful and serene; the view is framed with redwoods and hummingbirds buzz about; all this making it is so beautiful, especially while sitting in the hot tub! That deck is where I popped the question. It was a beautiful morning and I was getting a little nervous as the day progressed but I got her undivided attention with a photo album I had prepared (ostensibly to look over some of our great memories together, but its real purpose was to conceal the ring and box within a secret compartment I had cut out of the albums pages.) We were looking through it and of course we were getting emotional; we have had some great memories together. As we get to (what I knew was) the last page, I say to her, “and the next picture is worth a thousand words”; I turn the page...and inset into the rest of the album is the ring box. You only have to close your eyes to imagine what that moment was like. Total surprise. A gentle breeze, chirping birds, and the pounding of my heart the only sounds. Then it was chaotic joy…she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry…I’ll just say it was unbridled. Enchanted Meadows was the perfect place to do it in private yet in the face of nature so close. The environs were perfect for all my plans. And of course she said Yes (like a million times!) We continued our stay enjoying the fireplace, BBQ grill, and each other. It was a weekend (obviously) to remember. Tell the girl that bought over the bottle of Champagne- thanks so much! That was a really special touch. She looked really embarrassed because we were in the Hot Tub and she didn’t know what to do...we had a chuckle over it but thought it was SO sweet. Tell her thanks! The place was great; Love the new couches. Thanks again Katrina! Patrick and Kristy August 14th, 2010

My Girlfriend and I needed a quiet, private and romantic place to really get away from the craziness of San Francisco to celebrate an anniversary which also happened to fall on Valentine's day weekend; Enchanted Meadows was everything we hoped and much much more. It was literally a series of "no ways" the moment we walked in the door. It was as if the Owner, Katrina, had read our minds. Not only was there a fire ready to light in the fireplace, and the hot tub hot and ready to go, but there were two things that truly made us feel at home. There was a welcome bottle of Champagne which (we couldn't believe it) happened to be our favorite!, and on the wall in the bedroom was one of our favorite prints of all time - and oh so appropriate for the weekend - Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss". It was almost surreal to find these two things the moment we walked in...It really set the mood for an amazing and relaxing weekend and anniversary. We decided one day after we got there that 2 nights just weren't enough and called to reserve a 3rd night. This is truly a wonderful place, we hardly left the place and spent a lot of time in the wonderfully placed hot tub and grilling food on the deck...everything you could want or need was there... Thanks Katrina!

My husband and I brought our in-laws here from FRANCE. They, we, absolutely loved it. Very comfortable, cozy and serene. They stayed in the big house and we stayed (slept) in the Red Barn - everything worked out perfectly. We had some of our best meals from the grill (paired with some delicious wine that we brought from our " little cave" in San Francisco.) This place was definitely a home away from home...and we had magnificent weather. Quel beau temps! Thank you, merci beaucoup, Katie & Jeff Boudier Absolutely true, Boudiers (seniors)

ALeX - 5 years old: "I had fun staying here. I love the beaches and the green trees and everything possible I can have." "I love this Golden House. It is like the gold you find in a treasure box." This was more than we expected. A clean house without cabin smell - How do you do it? The camper family came for brunch and all agreed this is the best place in Anchor Bay! Thanks for sharing. Much peace, Risa, Steve & Alex
