Just outside the charming Idaho town of Sun Valley, nestled in the Wood River Valley, the robust log and stone style of the Rocky Mountain West combines with this European Castle Fantasy to create an enchanting family retreat. Described as a mountain castle, the home is nearly 17,000 sq ft surrounded by 13 acres of manicured lawns, horse pastures and over 3,000 trees, making a very private and cozy compound.
Built as a retreat for a large family, it allows them to come together comfortably and enjoy one another without intruding on each others individual privacy. The house encompasses 11 bedrooms, 17 bathrooms, 2 Great Rooms, multiple Entertainment areas, 2 separate Dining areas, an 800 sq ft Commercial Gym, a large Steam Room, full size elevator and a large outdoor hot tub spa. Clusters of 2 to 4 bedrooms surround 3 sitting areas, allowing guests to gather in intimate settings.
As you enter the residence through the massive double entry doors, you are struck by its sense of scale and space, the magnificence of the iron & stone fireplace, the double log trusses that span the length of the Great Room and the breathtaking views of Buttercup and Bald mountains through floor to ceiling windows framed by soft flowing draperies.
The house and the decorations are a fantasy. Each room shares bright, colorful fabrics, and hand-painted finishes of the highest quality. The mountain castle ambience is emphasized by antique oriental rugs splashing color over stone and wood floors, rich plaster walls, as well as antiques and furnishings from all over the world.
Between the Great Room and the Sun Room, with it’s warm southern exposure, is a professional gourmet kitchen that includes seating for 12 at the breakfast bar, Wolfe stove, grill , griddle and two ovens, Sub-zero refrigerator/freezer, two sinks, two dishwashers, trash compactor, ice maker and wine cooler.
The dining room, which seats 16, looks west out over a 20' high stone & iron water sculpture and onto the beautifully landscaped grounds that include waterfalls, ponds, several stone & iron sculptures and the Smokey Mountains in the distance.
The Master Suite is accessed from the Great Room through antique doors. Lush fabrics, vaulted ceiling and an old world plaster fireplace give it a distinctive European flair. The spacious Master Bath features his and her vanities and water closets, a large jetted Kohler soaking tub and walk-in shower. The Master bedroom and bath have outside access to a private deck which leads to the spa.
Below the Great Room, is an Entertainment Sitting Room in cowboy style and services 4 bedrooms and 3 baths, all opening onto west facing patio and lawn.The Game Room, is in American Indian motif, and offers a fun place to join together to enjoy a pool table, shuffleboard table and the Home Theater center.
A private Suite above has a sitting room joining 2 bedrooms, each with separate baths, and large enough to accommodate a family of seven comfortably. There are 4 bedroom suites at the north wing with a private Great Room, dining and kitchen area that enjoys a stone and iron fireplace and views of the north valley and Bald Mountain.
Below is a commercial grade gym equipped with Life Cycle upright and recumbent bikes, a Precor elliptical exerciser, Olympic style free weights, as well as 21 separate pieces of strength machines and TV with 2 monitors. The gym looks out onto the landscaped gardens, lawn and sledding hill.
Decks, patios and flower gardens connected by wandering stone paths surround the grand architecture of the structure. The beautifully landscaped grounds can accommodate large outdoor gatherings...perfect for a romantic wedding or large family get together.
The valley's trail system runs along the east border of the property allowing easy access to bike in the summer and cross country ski in the winter. The property has a sledding hill, perfect for children of all ages. The house is located in mid-valley allowing convenient access within minutes to the ski slopes, Sun Valley or the airport.
