Looking for an executive retreat, family reunion or summer holiday spot that is a truly exceptional getaway? Visit The Broken Anvil Ranch and experience true Western hospitality in a setting you’ll never forget. It’s 20 minutes by car (or a day’s ride on horseback!) heading south from the town of Lander, Wyoming.

This spectacular working ranch has 220 head of cattle and encompasses more than 4,000 Wyoming acres where the Wind River mountains end and the Red Desert begins. On the northeastern side of the Great Divide Basin a few hours from Yellowstone, the area was an historic passage for settlers heading to Oregon, Utah, and California way back when.

BAR has several buildings that serve as accommodations for guests, plus a Shoshone Indian tee pee, and vintage sheepherder's wagon. One cabin made of hand hewn logs was a late 1800's stagecoach stop near Lander. It was moved and rebuilt on the ranch in 1997. Interior décor is a comfortable Western style accented with antiques, fine art, and collectibles.

Enjoy your meals on the deck of the Main Cabin or in an outdoor covered dining area adjacent to the pool. The combination of our high altitude (6500 ft.) and ceiling fans placed in bedrooms and dining areas, helps to keep summer nights cool.

Take in endless views of rolling hills, prairie grass, wild flowers and the big sky. Our dogs (Shane and Atticus) and cats are friendly and add to the enjoyment of the ranch by providing companionship to our guests.

In the evenings, gather around the fire to hear cowboy poetry and tales of days gone-by. Listen to banjos and fiddles. Sing along to songs of the old West. Spread a blanket on the grass and marvel at the countless bright stars above, undiminished by city lights.

Choose your favorite horse for riding. They say a child never forgets the name of the first horse they ride. Here are some of our horses' names: Preacher, Charlie, Starbuck, Trinity, Dude, Spider, Sonny, Cree, Fred, Poco, Shirona and Flash. Our ranch hands work with riders of all experience from novice to experienced. Participate in daily ranch activities such as roping, calving (cruelty-free, no branding), and herding as part of the ranch’s all-natural cattle operations. Take a picnic trail ride to Harvey Draw or Sawmill Basin (Additional fee for horse back riding in arena or various trips. Please ask for details when booking)

Hiking, use of bicycles, swimming, use of hot tub, and fishing for trout (catch and release) in our stocked pond are all part of your lodging fee.

Interested in hunting? Our ranch manager, Todd Fross, is an outfitter for hunting trips on the ranch in the fall.

Although the Broken Anvil Ranch offers a full range of activities you can enjoy without leaving the property, you may want to make plans to venture out and enjoy attractions and recreational opportunities nearby. Use our ranch for a base as you travel to Jackson, The Grand Tetons, Shoshone National Forest, and Yellowstone National Park. Find world class rock climbing at Wild Iris, Baldwin Creek, and Sinks Canyon State Park. Head to the Boysen Reservoir and Wind River areas for fishing, water skiing and camping.

In the quaint town of Lander (touted in Outdoor and Sunset magazines as one of the nations' top small towns to live in!) visit a fine art gallery and bronze foundry. Experience the history of the area at the Museum of the American West. Numerous bookstores, restaurants, and shops line Main Street for your tourist pleasure. Visit the headquarters of the world renowned National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)and sign up for one of their stellar adventure trips!

Visit South Pass City Historic Site dating back to the pioneer era, seat of women’s suffrage, and the area's mining booms and busts. Enjoy a meal at one of the best steak houses in Wyoming in the remote old mining town of Atlantic City. And so much more!

If you’re looking for something more memorable than a hotel, dude ranch, or bed and breakfast consider being a part of our daily working life at The Broken Anvil Ranch. There's nothing like it!

Guest Testimonial
“The Broken Anvil Ranch is anything but ‘broken.’ In fact, it's where our family happily returns every year to reconnect with each other, friends, nature and peace under the canopy of an endless Wyoming sky. Every year we city folk experience new and amazing adventures at The Ranch. This year it was hunting for geodes on ranch land, and skeet shooting. Last year it was skinning a rattlesnake and coming face-to-face with big horn sheep and moose. The year before, it was rock climbing—which, by the way, is a great muscle workout—at the renowned Wild Iris, after which we cooked gourmet pizzas in the wood burning pizza oven and ate fresh salad greens picked by the kids from the green house. There's sand volleyball, a baseball diamond, horseback riding, swimming, fishing, biking and campfires, or just sitting in a rocking chair reading a good book with the peacefulness of uninhabited ranch land stretched before you as far as your eyes can see. No hustle bustle, no tourists, no chi chi movie stars and no need for dinner reservations! The rustically elegant Broken Anvil Ranch is the real American western (family) experience.”
