Fjellsynhytte (Mountain View Chalet) Ski Fish Bike or Hike,
Year Purchased: 2001
Why the Owner Chose Fernie
We came for the sking and stayed for the year round mountain setting and activities.
The Unique Benefits at this Alpine Chalet
We are situated such that the sun rises in the Coal Creek valley and sets in the Lizard Creek valley. We get more sun than almost anywhere in the valley. Trails for hiking and biking are accessible from the front door.
Cementary Bypass trail is the main access point to the Ridgemont Trail system. For detailed info Google Maps "Ridgemount Trails"
Highly recommended walking trail not too strenuous. Trailhead is a 40 minute walk from the house.
Recommended walking trail along river. Enter at Transcanada trailhead sign just across tracks. Walking the loop will take 1 to 1.5 hrs from the house.
Open in summer for day visitors and hikers. Access is 13 km down gravel road. Highly recommend the Old Growth Forest Trail (you may want to arrange shuttle one way)
The closest hike to the house. To reach trailhead from bottom of our street continue up powerline, turn left onto logging trail and right onto Upper River Road. Trailhead sign on left before steep down
Owner's Map of Fernie
We first came to Fernie for the skiing, that was 25 years ago. In 1999 when the skihill was expanded a new subdivision was being developed on a sunny bench with spectacular views. Two years later "the cabin" was completed. There is the main rental house as well as a smaller attached suit that we use personally.
We quickly discovered Fernie was so must more than a ski town. You can get off the hill on snowshoes or touring skis, cat skiing is a truly awesome experience, and the snowmobiling is world class. With spring, the first trails open for mountain biking in the much drier south country. By mid May, lower elevation trails are accessible although snow remains at higher elevations into late June. Summer opens up the back country for hiking and mountain biking whether on single track or logging roads. There is fly fishing, golfing, white water rafting and floating the Elk River, or one can go down to Lake Koocanusa for some swimming or boating. In the fall the days get cooler and the skies more blue. The forest are brillant as the Larches and Aspens turn golden. By November the skies are getting grey and the mountains are turning white. Out come the ski magazines as the cycle starts again.
