Bisbee house description
The historic Clawson House sits on top of Clawson Hill adjacent to Castle Rock in the heart of the town of Bisbee, which has been designated a National Historic District. The Territorial house, originally built in 1895 for mine manager, Spencer Clawson, was expanded in the 1920’s and now occupies over two acres of level and hillside land, with views out in three directions, including views over Downtown Bisbee out to mountains in Mexico.
The house includes wrap-around porches on three sides, with large rooms that incorporate original woodwork and built-in cabinetry, floor-to-ceiling French doors, original hardware, and sliding pocket doors. The house has been a perennial favorite on both Bisbee home and garden tours.
Downstairs, there is a large entrance hall, large living and dining rooms, downstairs bedroom with bath and shower (shower in bath tub), TV room or study, fully-equipped large kitchen with separate breakfast area, and screened-in porch. The living room has a gas fireplace. Upstairs is a large hall and two large bedrooms that share a bath. Each of the three bedrooms has a queen-sized bed. The upstairs bathroom has a Victorian clawfoot bath that is outfitted as a shower (in bath tub) as well. Outside is a xeriscape cottage garden that blooms March through November, and a large outdoor eating area for al fresco dining.
Due to the age of the house, and the fact that it is built one story off the ground, the house is NOT handicapped-accessible. There are staircases with 12 steps (shown in pictures) to climb to enter the house. Once in the house, however, the first floor (with downstairs bedroom and bath) is completely level. The bath has a standard bathtub with shower head.
Bisbee is a former mining town, located a mile high in the Mule Mountains, and one-and-one-half hours drive southeast of Tucson. Subsequent to the mine closing in the mid-1970’s, Bisbee has emerged as a friendly, fun and quirky artists/crafts town, and in addition is a good center for exploring nearby areas such as Ramsey Canyon (one of the premier birdwatching areas in the United States), Tombstone, the Coronado National Monument, Kartchner Caverns, as well as the Chiracahua National Monument and Forest. There are numerous hiking opportunities in and around Bisbee, and a public golf course is five miles away. The town offers a number of fun restaurants, many of which are within a short walk. Also within walking distance is the High Desert Market. The market is only a few hundred yards from the house and serves a great breakfast!
Because of its altitude, Bisbee has moderate year round temperatures, with a temperature 'spring' that begins in April and a 'water' spring that begins in July, with short and cooling 'monsoon' rains coming through the mountains through early September. Many residents of Tucson and Phoenix use Bisbee as their summer 'get-away.'
The house is not air conditioned, but there are a number of ceiling fans in the rooms, including the bedrooms. Most homes in Bisbee do not have air conditioning.
While winter temperatures are moderate by most people's standards, with many bright, sunny days, Bisbee (as with other historic towns in Arizona and New Mexico) is located at significant altitude. It is NOT South Florida (or Palm Springs, for that matter). Your can check out Bisbee temperatures on a number of web pages.
Bisbee is increasingly being publicized as a vacation destination, and on March 29, 2002, Money Magazine listed Bisbee on its 'Best Places to Vacation' list of ten top vacation destinations, citing its climate and accessibility to a variety of nearby attractions In addition, the National Trust for Historic Preservation added Bisbee to its 2005 list of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations -- the first Arizona city to make this list of 'unique and lovingly preserved communities.' (click on 'More Bisbee Information' link below for copy of articles).
For the fashion conscious, Kate Spade featured Bisbee in a 12 page photo shoot that appeared in the March 2006 Vogue and Town and Country magazines.
Due to the many antiques which are in the house, the house is not suitable for families with young children unless they are closely supervised or used to living with antiques. There are three queen size beds only, with no other sleeping arrangements, such as pull out couches. No Smoking. There is a very helpful onsite caretaker on the property who occupies a separate apartment, and can be contacted to provide additional assistance during your stay. The apartment is located underneath the house, with its separate outside entrance, and in no way affects the privacy of guests.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome with payment of an additonal refundable deposit.
Routine cleaning of linens and towels is provided at no additional charge, as is routine vacuuming of the premises after guests leave. We reserve the right to charge for unusual cleaning associated with spills, stains, etc.

Best in Old Bisbee
Best in Old Bisbee
We stayed here for six weeks, and I can’t say enough good things about the property. Out of all the three-bedroom rentals in Old Bisbee, it is absolutely the best. Most rentals in Old Bisbee are so small that guests are on top of each other. Honestly, I often had to go searching for my wife, because the house has so many sitting areas and is so quiet. You can’t hear any activity from room to room. And it was so easy to entertain here. With two large bedrooms with queen-sized beds and an adjoining bathroom on the second floor, and one bedroom with a queen-sized bed and private bathroom on the first floor, it was very easy to accommodate overnight guests. With comfy period furniture and tasteful decor, the house feels more like home than a vacation rental. We’ve already booked it for next winter and hope to continue spending our winters here. If you’re thinking about staying here, please don’t pick our weeks ;)

The Clawson House was in a perfect location in Bisbee. We could walk almost anywhere we wanted to go. Unlike most homes in Bisbee, it had a very nice yard and plenty of space to park. My husband enjoyed hitting golf balls in the backyard in the morning. The wrap around porches were very inviting but the weather was just a little too chilly for us to enjoy them in February. Maybe next year will be warmer, if we return. My son joined us for several days. The house is very large and we never felt cramped. Everyone had their own space. Bisbee is close to several golf courses and the rates were very reasonable. There are also several National Parks that are just a short drive from Bisbee which we enjoyed. The town of Bisbee is a treasure with many quirky, unsual shops and galleries. There are several great dining options, too. We enjoyed the Table, the Screaming Banshee, and Santiago's Mexican Restaurant. We could walk to all of them. As for the home itself, I felt that the photos were very accurate. I loved the floor to ceiling screened windows which we could open on sunny days. It is a very old home and some of the windows didn't open very well and needed attention. The home is pet friendly, which we appreciated because we were able to bring our cat. However, someone who rented before us must have had a dog or two because all the lower frames on the windows were smeared by wet noses. Those windows should have been washed. It was very obvious that the dogs had been looking out every window. We did much of our own cooking and found almost everything we needed in the kitchen. The only thing that seemed to be missing was a can opener and when we called Kim, the caretaker, she promply provided us with one. She also was good about bringing laundry detergent and other things that were running low at the house. She was going to clean for us once a week, but that only happened once. I believe she was having some health issues when we were in Bisbee. I really enjoyed the gas fireplace in the living room. There was good lighting in all the rooms for reading. A couple of things I would recommend: It would be nice to have a gas grill outside instead of the old charcoal grill and it should be clean. The kitchen sink and coffee maker should be cleaned before each new guest arrives. The outside porches were dusty, including the furniture. That may have been because of the season, but if it had been nice enough to use, it was not clean. We enjoyed our stay and hope to return.

Owner response: Can't wait to host your next visit! Enjoy your stay!!!
It was a privilege to stay in this fine historic home. It is so well preserved and maintained. Large rooms, beautiful furnishings, period decor. Landscaped grounds were a treat. The large porches that wrap around the house were perfect for relaxing and taking in the view. A good kitchen allowed us to cook at home. The tall french doors/windows allowed for good air circulation. Comfortable beds, good linens made for great sleeping under the ceiling fans. A short walk to shopping and dining. We hope to stay there again soon.

Wonderful stay in Bisbee
Wonderful stay in Bisbee
Our group of 6 had a great time staying at the Clawson House. The house was spotless and there were so many rooms, that we had plenty of space. There were unbelievable views from every window!! We all especially enjoyed sitting on the screen porch off the kitchen while sipping our morning coffee or enjoying a nightcap. Kim and Rex were very helpful while not being intrusive. Definitely would return. Dinner at Santiago's should not be missed and the long stairway leading down to the Main street in Bisbee made this the perfect location for our weekend getaway!

The Clawson House is awesome! ! I have stayed there many times so I know how wonderful it is. Two couples who had never stayed there were so impressed that they said the "Clawson House" would be their first choice when they planned their next trip to Bisbee. (They were bragging about the wonderful place they were staying at all evening!!) I would recommend to anyone planning a trip to Bisbee to consider the "Clawson House". All the ammenties of a five star hotel. *****

Home away from home.
Home away from home.
My husband and I recently returned home after spending a month at the Clawson House. It was so comfortable and convient that I hated to leave. It had everything we needed, and was just a short walk to town for shopping and food. The kitchen was well stocked with all the tools one would need. It was great to sit on the porch and watch the birds and look at the well maintained gardens. The ample parking was a real bonus for Bisbee. We loved Abigail, the caretaker. She was very helpful and friendly. She introduced us to the Bisbee Saturday market. It was nice to go buy fresh produce and meet the locals. The Clawson House is a great place to call home while visiting the surrounding area. We were able to visit multiple bird watching areas and come home to a comfy house. I can hardly wait for our next visit to Bisbee and the Clawson House.

A magical place!
A magical place!
My husband and I stayed at the Clawson house for a week at the end of September and had a wonderful time. The house is so comfortable and is furnished with beautiful things. Great porches to sit and drink morning coffee or watch the sun go down. Very peaceful and private. The location was perfect! A view of the whole town from the front and an easy walk to breakfast at the High Desert Market or into town. The owners are great and the caretaker couldn't have been more helpful. I will definitely stay here again!

What a very special place the Clawson House is. We just returned from our yearly trip and I think I speak for all of us that we thoroughly enjoyed our visit! Abigail, the care taker was and absolute Jewel. The wrap around porch invites you to sit and enjoy the spectacular scenery all around you. The house is well stocked with everything you need from dishes to linens, just bring your own groceries! We are looking forward to our next visit and would highly recommend the Clawson House to all our friends and family.
