Dating from the late 19th/early 20th century, this private cottage is a sanctuary with spectacular views and will take you back to a simpler time. The secluded & rustic seasonal camp is only 2 mi. from rural village of Bainbridge & only 3 hrs. from NYC. Features a large, beautiful screened-in porch (9.5' x 40.3') overlooking the Susquehanna River with an absolutely stunning view. Sitting on riverbank 35+ feet above the river, you have incredible views of the river, valley and surrounding hills. Quaint bedrooms (1-Queen/1-Dbl), camp has sitting room with (2) overhead fans, small kitchen with stove/refrigerator (incl. coffeemaker, microwave, cookware, tableware & utensils) and bathroom with campy screened-in shower only. 14' canoe, new 10' Walker Bay rowing dinghy, gas grill, basic cable TV, radio/cassette/CD/DVD player, 1-electric space heater included. 2-single place kayaks & propane space heater available for rent. Available 17 May thru 21 October, 2013.

What To Bring: Leave your stresses at home and bring: a favorite book, camera, sunscreen (and mosquito repellent when outside at dawn or dusk), and, of course, your personal canoe/kayak and/or fishing gear. The river offers excellent fishing - smallmouth bass, walleye pike, rockies, perch and catfish at night. And, fishing where feeder streams empty into the river and the water is clear over gravel, will often yield a brookie or rainbow trout! Also, bring water shoes/aqua socks for foot protection from sharp objects while wading, swimming, tubing, canoeing or kayaking. Renters are free to use 14' aluminum canoe & new 10' Walker Bay Dinghy (rowboat) - an easy dream to row. (2) single place kayaks available to rent. And, come prepared with appropriate clothing for the season – temperatures can range from mid-30’s in early Spring/late Fall, to 70 and over a 100 degrees in the Summer - overnight temps can drop to mid-40’s in late Spring/early Fall.

Area Golf Courses: 2 - 15 miles: Afton Golf Club (public) - Afton; Belden Hill Golf Club (public) - Harpursville; Blue Stone Golf Course (public) - Oxford; Hardwood Hills Golf Course (public) - Deposit; Ouleout Creek Golf Course (public) - Franklin; Sidney Golf & Country Club (private) - Sidney; Sundown Golf & Country Club (public) - Guilford.

Other Area Activities: Antique shops, supermarkets, gas stations, churches, restaurants, lounges and many other businesses within 2-5 miles of camp.

Memorial Day Weekend: General Clinton Canoe Regatta & Fireworks (Bainbridge) - over 3,000 paddlers in various divisions paddle the Susquehanna River finishing at the community park in Bainbridge - also rides, food and drinks with beer tent on grounds. General Clinton Park is headquarters for this 70 mile endurance race. Many activities available at the park and in communities along the river from Cooperstown to Bainbridge during this gala weekend. Other Amenities

              • Details:

A wonderful & rustic retreat - NOT hotel like accommodations - our family refers to a stay at the camp, sometimes for weeks-on-end, as sophisticated camping - a very basic but relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of the everyday life most of us lead. Screened porch across front of camp overlooking river/valley has six (6) wicker rockers and several occasional tables. Smoking Not Allowed inside camp - porch is OK. Issues to be aware of, especially renters with children, a very high/steep bank in front of camp overlooking river and the proximity to river are potential dangers. Also, poison ivy, insects (mosquitoes, spiders, etc) and other wild critters (non-poisonous snakes, raccoons, skunks, coyote, red fox, porcupine, opossum, deer, bear, etc) are part of the natural environment along the river and care should be taken to keep reasonable distance when observing. Waterfront is rocky - OK for launching small boat/canoe/kayak. (2) single-place kayaks available for rent....morecollapse

Dick is an excellent host, thoughtful and helpful. The cabin is just as the pictures show. No frills but definitely comfortable and well-stocked. My husband and kids fished for hours, and we all took the row boat and canoe out. The only disappointment was that the view of the river is 80% blocked by shrubbery. The photo of the river is not from the cabin.

Owner response: Agreed, it is not currently an unfettered view of the river due to the overgrowth of shrubbery. That said, this issue will be addressed prior to the 2013 season; and, I sincerely thank you for your review and hope you'll return as a guest here at Camp Eagle Spirit. The photo was taken several years ago from in front of the porch where the stone bench is now. Thank you for taking the time to review your stay - Dick

If you are looking for a serene retreat to relax and unwind, look no further, Camp Eagle Spirit is your destination. Your journey begins as you travel down a quaint, winding road, under a canopy of trees, past surrounding camps that are reminiscent of a simpler, quieter time. As you pull into a clearing, a most charming turn of the century cottage sits high on a bank overlooking the Susquehanna River. You have arrived at Camp Eagle Spirit. The cottage is stocked with everything you need for your home away from home and is exceptionally clean and inviting. The owner and host, Dick, has left no small detail overlooked and has provided a well-appointed kitchen and a gas grill for barbequing outdoors. The cottage is spacious and features a beautiful, screened in porch that invites you to kick back and enjoy Mother Nature’s scenery, or to settle into a wicker rocker with one of a variety of books stocked for your reading pleasure. We cannot say enough good about the charming owner. Dick was a very caring and informative host who graciously welcomed us to the cottage and then left us to explore and settle in. Although Dick insisted on respecting our privacy, we found him to be great company and very knowledgeable about the surrounding area. Having family locally, we planned a cookout, and upon learning that Dick knew some of our family, we invited him to join us. We spent the evening sharing stories, laughing and toasting memories into the night. Dick is a fabulous host and a gentleman. Camp Eagle Spirit is a magical place, a place to bring your heart and find your soul. Our only regret was that we only had a week. We cannot wait to return next year as this is now our favorite vacation spot! Chuck, Rhonda & Bella

Absolutely a great place to unwind and relax, which is what my sister and I wanted while we enjoyed the opportunity to spend time together. We agree with the rave reviews and add this: It is a great place to watch creatures, great and small. Deer are across the river at dusk; in search of fish in the morning, great blue heron stroll the river’s edge and ducks paddle it. Within three to eight feet from the porch, birds, squirrels (red and gray), chipmunks, and rabbits munch on clover, nibble "bird" seed, and comically attempt to outwit one another to get the best—or lion’s share—of the latter. Two hummingbird feeders hanging from the porch are busy places, and it is so quiet at the cabin that you can hear the hum of the tiny wings. The variety of birds and their colors, including woodpeckers, is incredible. A very big treat was the perfect position of the cabin to watch bald eagles: You are eye level with them as they soar over the river—close enough to see the color of their eyes! Was it one of an eagle pair that we spotted at least once daily, searching for fish for him-/herself and the waiting eaglets back at a nest? That’s what we imagined. The cabin is clean; the beds very comfortable, providing great nights’ sleep. We were there for the high-heat week of July 4, but our experience was that it was more than manageable with the fans. (At times, we did not need them at all.) Yes, there is a DVD player, but we spent all our time when at the cabin on the porch, enjoying the sights and sounds, which at times included the rumble of a train that somehow felt right (no, no train whistles). But do get out and explore the roads, also. There are incredible views, lovely old farms, etc. Host Dick is a kind and generous man; his sweet dog, Shadow, knows to leave the guests alone but will be very pleased to greet you, if you are so inclined.

From the moment my boyfriend and I arrived, I knew that we would finally be able to reconnect and rewind time. The simple inner peace, tranquility, and humble surroundings make it so special. Dick was an exemplary host, always willing to ensure your stay is as wonderful as you could imagine. Many of the things you might not remember to bring last minute are available to make this stay comfortable and completely relaxing. I never wanted to leave! We booked for four nights and then stayed for eight! Thank you Dick! We'll be back!

My wife and I stayed in this cottage for a week during late July of 2011. The best part of the cottage was the porch. We spent a lot of time just sitting in yhe rocking chairs looking at the view. Eagles would catch fish out of the river. We also saw herons and listened to a chorus of song birds. You'll like the guy who owns the cottage. He'll make sure your kitchen is supplied, He'll ask you to leave a deposit, but he gave ours all back to us, even though I pointed out some damage and suggested he keep about twenty-five dollars. For my wife and I, this was just what we needed. We will probably go back next year. Maybe for longer.

The cabin was wonderful, rustic, with just enough modern conveniences.Every thing you need is pretty much there, from zip lock bags to a lobster pot. There are menus for local restaurants and Dick even lets you know which are his favorite. Also info. on local attractions is available. My Wife and Mother Inlaw loved Frog Pond Farm and went there several times.Dick is a great host, checking in with you daily to see if you need anything or do anything for you to make your stay more enjoyable. If you just want to unwind and relax, this is the place to do it. i plan to return next year and have recommended Camp Eagle Spirit to family and friends. Thanks Dick Scott & Family

Our party of 4 stayed at the camp for one night while we were riding our bikes across New York. The camp was very clean and super comfortable. After an 80 mile ride that day, we enjoyed some great dinner on the screened in porch overlooking the Susquehanna. It would've been great to have more time there but we were out the door early the next morning because of some massive rain. The owner was very accommodating and great to work with. It was a very memorable stop on our 5 day bike tour across New York!

This place is great - all the desired facilities and a brilliant view of the river. Dinner on the porch above the river, or a nice outside fire, a bottle of wine and a few good friends - what more do you need in life? The rooms are clean and we had everything needed. Perhaps the best part of this place is the owner, Dick, who really wants his guests to have a great time and enjoy the surrounds. Dick filled us in with all the information we needed and he makes the place feel like you're staying at an old family friend's cabin, not at some sterile hotel room. Stay here - you'll like it!

Our week at Camp Eagle Spirit far exceded our expectations. This is the perfect place to disconnect from the craziness and spend quality time together as a family. Much of our time was spent on the screenporch either eating meals together or playing cards and games or simply relaxing while enjoying the peaceful view. Kayaking, fishing, hiking, and antique hunting were fun adventures. The drive-in movies nearby were a surprise bonus. We have so many happy memories of this vacation. By the third day, our 10-year-old asked if we could come back again next year. A big thank you to Dick for making our stay at the cabin a truely wonderful experience.

My husbad and I went to camp eagle spirit to celebrate our 1 year anniversary and it was with no doubt the best idea ever!! My husband had found this beautiful getaway location, away from the hectic life we live in NYC. All we wanted was some peace and to enjoy ourselves, and this was exactly what we had. The view is gorgeous, it's amazing very relaxing, the house is so well equipped with everything you could possibly need, it is also very clean and comfortable, so cozy, just exactly what you need when you want to get away and appreciate nature comfortably. Dick, the owner, is the best host ever!! He is sooooo sweet and pleasant. We will definitely go back by our selves and with our families.
