  Because I am nice and also not generally a complainer, I will start with the positives....great views, nice furniture, well cleaned prior to check-in. The price is right for San Francisco. Now the negatives.... This house reeks of smoke. It smells like a smoker's home and cannot simply be put off to second hand smoke from an adjacent unit or something. One of the upstairs bathrooms smelled so strongly we couldn't even use it so our party of 8 people (4 adults and 4 kids) used just one bathroom the whole time. All the linens provided like towels, wash cloths, etc. reeked of smoke. Unless you are a smoker or simply don't mind the smell of smoke in the house, your bedrooms, etc. I would not consider renting this place. The owners/managers put it off to an intermittent problem out of their control, and maybe it is, but if there is nothing they can do about it, then this place should not be a vacation rental. We kept all windows open all night with fans going and still could not rid the place of the smell. The carpets in the unit are dingy and in need of replacement. The overall bathrooms, wallpaper, etc. are dated and the photos posted are not really reflective of the look and feel of the place. Lastly if you do not have a car and are using public transport to get around during your stay, the house is located at the top of a VERY steep hill. The closest bus or muni stops are not terribly far away but walking up that hill to the place is a killer, especially if you are carrying kids or pushing strollers as we were. If you have a car it is fine I guess. Place could be great but it isn't unfortunately, largely because of the smoke smell. Read the reviews and heed them. I wish I had. I asked the owners about it ahead of time and they put it off as much less of an issue than it is.

  Owner response: The unit has never been smoked in, but we can not control what happens outside the unit. San Francisco is a tight city. That is part of the experience.

  My family brought to the west coast for my 50th birthday since I have never been. The house was very large for the 5 of us which included 2 children. The view was fantastic from the deck. It is something I will never forget. The owner was great letting us check out late do to our flight not leaving until midnight and was very helpful during our stay. I recommend this house for anyone that likes a great view in a quite neighborhood . The only problem was the large hills in San Francisco. I realized I was not in as good of shape as I thought I was. We all had a great time. Thanks

  We (husband, wife, 4 children six and under, mother-in-law) stayed here for a week shortly before Christmas. The place is roomy and had plenty of rooms and beds to accommodate us. The location is great. Loved the views of the city. There was a faint smoke smell, but truly nothing that bothered us. Our six-year-old has slight respiratory allergies and he didn't seem to react to anything.

  If you are looking for a clean, comfortable apartment in a safe and quiet San Francisco neighborhood, with off-street parking and awesome views thrown in as a bonus, then this place is for you. The pictures above are accurate, the apartment is a duplex with 4 good-sized bedrooms upstairs and the kitchen and living room down stairs.There's a full kitchen with dishwasher and large dining table. There's wifi and broadband internet hook-ups. There are great views from both levels, but the outdoor deck is the place to be on a sunny morning. I did not have any problems with smokey smells; there are fans and an ionizer to keep the air clean. When you are ready to explore the neighborhood, a 15 minute hike will take you to the Botanical Gardens in GG Park, while a more hearty 45 minute stroll to the west will bring you to Ocean Beach. Downtown is a 20 minute drive, or you can catch the Muni on Judah Street, just down the hill. Also down the hill are shops and restaurants, as well as a supermarket (although Safeway is the way to go while in SF). I've stayed here 3 times since 2010 and have not been disappointed.

  We had a college reunion in S.F. and we were looking for a spacious apartment at a reasonable price. We had a great time at the house, it is very large, the fixtures and furniture are a little older than they look in the pictures but everything works alright. We read a couple of reviews about a bad smell but it's hardly noticeable and really no reason at all to not choose this place. We got very good customer service from the owner, he is quick with emails, and all seems quite well organized, although we had to send a couple of emails to get the deposit back. Other than the couple of very small details we mentioned, we were completely satisfied with this booking and we would certainly consider booking this place again in the future.

  If you want a nice comfortable place to stay the next time you're in the Bay area, one that accommodates 4 couples and is conveniently located close to great cafes then your going to love this rental. That and great views from the deck, a place to gather if you want to do some of your own cooking plus off street parking for two cars. Next time our travels bring us to San Francisco, we'll be contacting you!

  BE AWARE of very strong cigarette fumes in all the bedrooms and a very rude, unprofessional property owner. Do not let my experience happen to you! Here's what happened.. Since I was aware of the smoking fumes (noted in previous reviews (who by the way, also seemed very upset with the owner)), I made sure to ask about the issue before signing the contract. The property owner assured me in writing that the fumes would be taken care of and that it would not be a problem. Upon arrival, the smell was so undeniably strong that I contacted the property manager right away, who promptly arrived with a bottle of febreeze and air purifier and said he would ask the down stairs "chain smoking" tenant to please withhold for the weekend. That night however, the fumes persisted, we all had difficulty breathing, and had terrible headaches the next day. When I tried to reach the property manager and owner about the persisting problem, neither of them answered my call until the property owner called me back. After a brief conversation about the problem, he very bluntly stated there was nothing he could do. When I reminded him that I had a written email confirmation from him stating that this would not be a problem, he stumbled for words, HUNG UP THE PHONE, and did not answer my second call nor called me back since then. This is entirely unprofessional conduct and very poor customer service. After he hung up on me and wouldn't answer my second call, I left him a message and vacated the property that night. The fumes from a chain smoker in the downstairs property have NOT been remedied and cannot be taken care of by cheap air freshners. Not to mention the conduct of the property owner. I have stayed at many VRBO homes in the past with great property management and satisfaction but never had an experience such as this. I would not wish this experience with the property or property owner on anyone!

  Owner response: Our rental has been in operation for over three years. Please read our other great reviews. There has never been any smoker renter. The smoke comes from outside the unit. We have sealed the window where the smoke some times drifts in. Furthermore, we have installed two air purifiers to clean the air. From time to time, there will be faint odor of smoke but hardly noticeable. When the renter called repeatedly to complaint about the smell, the onsite manager went to the unit to assess the situation. The smell, if any, is no greater than any other time. The manager purchased an additional air purifier and installed additional air freshener to please the renter. We did the best we can to accommodate the renter, but the renter was very unreasonable. She demanded that we refund 100% of the rent and pay for her whole family to stay at a hotel in the city for three nights. We told her we can not accommodate her request, but she will not take no for an answer. There is nothing more we can do for the renter. Our unit is smoke free but we can not control what goes on outside the unit. If anybody is medically allergic to the slightest smell of smoke, we do not recommend our property.

  Our whole family (3 generations) stayed here for 4 nights. It was great for the kids as they have plenty of room to run around, a lot more comfortable than hotel rooms. We made good use of the kitchen to cook meals and it was great to enjoy food as a family in leisure. The manager was very helpful and told us where the grocery stores were etc and was quick to respond (we couldn't work the tv and he came around to fix it in an hour). Muni was close (just down the road). The rooms were spacious and everyone has room to spread out. The house is smoke free but does has a little smell from the neighbor but not an issue for us. Overall we had a great stay.

  Lovely spacious apartment with stunning views of the city from the top deck. The neighbourhood is nice and quiet and there is a shop within a short walking distance. The rooms are spacious and well equipped with good quality furnishings. The beds are comfortable and both house showers have a strong flow and plenty of hot water. The kitchen boasts a large range-style cooker with a powerful extractor fan so you won't end up with cooking smells all around the house. There is a huge rear-projection tv in the living room and free wifi which was pretty fast. The location is at the top of the hill, so be prepared for a steep walk back from the tram stop - not a problem if you hire a car. We were a party of 8 staying for 3 nights and we felt at home and didn't get under each other's feet. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a similar break or longer still.

  My husband and I and our two kids stayed at the condo last week and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! We were a little skeptical because it was our very first time renting a condo and we didn't know what to expect. After searching several places, we decided to pick this one and we're soooo glad we did. The condo turned out to be perfect and very accomadating for our family and we can't tell you how comfortable it was. The rooms were clean and spacious and we were very impressed how well the property was maintained by the owners. And we didn't have any problems with the place smelling like "smoke" like the last renter had complained in her review. It literally felt like home away from home for us and we felt blessed that we found a great place at a great location for a great price. I would highly recommend it to others and my family and I are already planning our next stay there!

  My family and I rented this until is August 2011. We always check for non-smoking units only as we all dispise the smell of cigarette smoke and my son has mild asthma. From the moment we walked in the door- it felt as though we were walking into a bar room- before smoking was illegal. As we moved from the downstairs to the upstairs it got significantly worse. The back bedroom and bathroom were unusable! I contacted the manager of the unit that evening to complain and he shared that the renter on the floor below is a chain smoker. He offered to refund our money and we could go elsewhere- which wasn't really an option given that there were 6 of us traveling together and it was the peak of tourist season. He said we would send the unit manager over to check on it the next day. When we got back the next day- there was a small fan on the floor of the bathroom blowing air out the window, and a note telling us a air purifier would be brought over. We were also told that there were other fans in the closet that we could set up. The purifier never showed up- was being shipped from LA- seriously- there are no air purifiers available in all of San Francisco? I found the management to be utterly unhelpful with this issue and a resolution to the problem never occurred. The manager offered us a $150 refund off our rental- Really- his offer represented less than 1 nights stay! The prior week we were in Lake Tahoe and the town shut off the water for 6 hours. The rental company there refunded us 1 and 1/2 days rent without even asking. In this Funston unit, we lost the total use of 1 of the 4 bedrooms and could only use 1 of the 2 bathrooms due to the overwhelming smell of smoke. My two sons spent the week sleeping on the floor in the master bedroom. We tried to use the cots but they were not in very good shape. The unit and smoke wer truely discusting!!!! In addition, the unit was not very well stocked in terms of utensils and other cooking instruments. While the patio was wonderful, the reality of it was that we got to use it only 1 day as all of the other days it was way too foggy to sit out there. Bottom line: if you long for the days of lying in bed with smoke wafting around your body and your wardrobe smelling of smoke- THIS IS JUST THE PLACE FOR YOU! Otherwise STAY AWAY- your lungs will thank you! PS: I turned down the $150 refund as it was offered only if I did not leave a negative review.

  Owner response: Our unit has always been smoke free. Unfortunately, we are the top unit of a four unit building. The neighbor below our unit is a chain smoker, and the smell will sometime enter our unit if the wind is blowing correctly. We try to close the windows in that area of the unit to prevent the smell of smoke from coming in. Our unit is rented out constantly. We don't have major issue with previous and current renters as our previous reviews have shown. We have installed a air purifer and it is working great. We try to accommodate that renter, but she is not reasonable. She demanded complete refund or she will file a bad review. Most people will call that blackmailing. We can't anticipate every renters' medical condition. We tried to accommodate her family by install a fan immediately to disburse the smell, but her demand was just unreasonable. My manager told me the smell was not that bad to begin with. We feel her review is not fair and just. Please do not post her review.

  Between 6 adults and 3 children under two there was plenty of space for all without feeling cramped. The availability of parking for 3 cars was an excellent feature. Travel time to the piers, restaurants, airports, and the Golden Gate Bridge were never greater then 20 minutes by car. House is almost at the top of a hill which we did walk up and down to get to public trans. Having a car is a better option. There was a local grocery right down the street similar to a small Whole Foods, with excellent selection of food to take advantage of the roof top grill. Two complaints, the space was clean but not hotel clean, I was expecting a little more. Bathroom #2 and Bedroom #3 did have lingering odor of smoke from cigarettes, from what I was told the downstairs residents. Not a deal breaker just unexpected. Owners were a pleasure to work with and very responsive to e-mailed questions and concerns. Overall we had an excellent stay and would consider staying here again

  You might think that the word "perfect" is an exaggeration but in this case, its truely the perfect way to describe my time in this condo. I recently stayed here for a week while on vacation with my wife and kids. I must say I was surprised at the beauty and cleanliness of it. Great location with breathe taking views!! It was very spacious and comfortable as well. I highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a place to call home.. Whether it be for a day, a week, or even a month. I would definately stay here again. It was worth every penny.

  We stayed here for New Years for nearly a week it was so sad, the kitchen was infested with ants, the carpet was dirty with stains everywhere, the laundry was hopeless coin operated washing machine and dryer, with cloths still in the dryer from someone else, the bedrooms had cobwebs in every room the second bathroom smelt like dirty old socks or cigars smoke we sprayed every time we had to go in there nothing could get rid of the stench, it rained and the plaster came off the ceiling on the stairs, with water trickling down the wall, we were very disappointed. If we had`nt have paid in advance and we could have gotten other accommodation at this time of the year we would have left. It was very disappointing to have come so far and be confronted with this mess. NEVER AGAIN

  We stayed at the Funston house for 5 nights and were completely pleased! We were joined by another couple, our daughter, her college roommates and some of her best friends from home. Oh yes, and we brought our Pug. We were all so comfortable! The pictures accurately reflect the interior of the house. The bedrooms are so spacious and tastefully decorated. The view was stunning. You do have to go through a bedroom to get to the deck but truly....it wasn't that big of a deal. Standing out there and looking over the other homes in the area...we were surprised at how few of the homes had rooftop decks. There is a carport to fit four cars. Golden Gate Park is so close. The Great Highway Beach is just a short drive west. The area is residential but there are some cool places to eat near the bottom of the hill. Public transportation is close.....within a few blocks. We walked downhill to catch Muni to downtown. It's a $2 ride to Market street and Union Square. The check in process was easy. Reservations and booking procedures went smoothly. I would recommend the Funston house to anyone who wants to enjoy this world class city in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood, in a house with a gorgeous view!

  We had a great time in San Francisco, and it was really nice to have a lovely place to come back at the end of the day. Condo has very spacious, and confortable. The only thing we didn´t like, was that there was a very strong, and not nice smell in the apartment, like a wet dog!!! apart from that, highly recomendable

  Just back from four days at the Funston condo. It was perfect for our party of six. Plenty of room for everyone to spread out, yet many places for gathering as a group. We spent a lot of time on the rooftop enjoying the views of the bridge, city and mountains (once the fog lifted, that is). Condo was spotlessly clean, comfortable, offered everything we needed in terms of amenities and the ample parking was a huge plus. Agree with previous reviewer that a GPS would be helpful for navigating the neighborhood. Would absolutely return to the condo for our next visit. Five stars!

  It was a great place to stay. We were they for four nights back in April with our three kids. Having all the room was great. It is a steal cost wise in comparison to a hotel. Thanks for the great accommodations!

  Just stayed at this house (April 2010) for a recent family wedding. 9 of us shared the house. It was absolutely perfect! The house itself is very spacious. All the bedrooms are a very decent size. The living room is also spacious with a massive TV! The rooftop deck is fantastic with spectacular views. Access to the deck is through one of the bedrooms. There are not very many shops etc near the house but it is 3 blocks from a muni stop so is ideal for travelling into town. Be prepared to for the walk up the hill on return to the house though! There is a garage beside the house for parking. Lovely, quiet and safe area. The house was equipped with all modern conveniences - even a computer with internet access. Linens, etc. were all provided. I would highly recommend a stay here. Ideal!

  This was a nice condo the inside was a nice lay out only thing we didn't like was having to walk through a bedroom to roof deck. The person that meet us there was great he even took us for a little drive to show us to local markets. The condo could have used a fresh coat of paint on the out side but the inside was nice. Would recommend gps it was so much easier getting a round. It was good coming back to the condo at night the beds were great to get a good night sleep. It had all the kitchen thing you need to cook. Having a washer and dryer was a big plus too. I would recommend this property to a family lots of room. The local market were great lots of fresh fruit and veg. and the Safeway groc. store is only a little drive but it had everything you will need.Sitting out on the deck at night was great too got a little cool but was nice need a jacket at night. Had a great time in San Francisco 1st time using Homeaway But would recommend it to who ever was looking for a place to rent on vacation much better then a hotel. Steve from Minnesota

  Our family met in San Francisco for a family vacation in early June. The Funston condo was a wonderful place to spend this special week. We were comfortable from the start - all the necessay amenities are provided. We couldn't believe the view from the rooftop - totally awesome and so relaxing to spend time there. We will definitely be checking availability the next time we are in SFO. Thank you for the hospitality and warm, wonderful accommodations.

  This place is perfect. We had a wonderful stay early this month, Dec 2008. Spacious and fully equipped. Our host was extremely nice and helpful. Public transport is a short walk away. What a beautiful view from the balcony. HIGHLY recommended.
