Christmas in New York

Guest: E K.
Date of Stay: 12/20/11 Review Submitted: 01/05/12

We had 2 weeks in NYC over Christmas and New Years so an apartment was a much better option for 4 people than a hotel. Vanessa was fantastic and answered a million questions from me before we had even arrived so I was confident we wouldnt have any problems, which we didn't. The location is perfect in the buzzing East Village. Close to the subway and an abundance of fantastic food options within 2 minutes walk. A massive Whole Foods is right down the road, as is the shopping in Soho. The apartment itself was really cute, we loved the fairy lights! It was clean, plenty of towels, everything we needed. The couch was super comfortable and there are some great guide books on the shelves we could use during our stay. There is also a list of reccommended restaurants Vanessa has provided if you need any suggestions. There are some loud noises coming from the pipes at times but we got used to it and it certainly wasnt anything that would prevent us from staying here again. The main bedroom gets some street noise at night but we were in the "city that never sleeps" so we found it more interesting than annoying. We would reccommend the apartment for a family or a group of friends travelling together. We had a fabulous time and would stay again during our next visit.

Owner response:So happy you enjoyed your stay and got to experience the city over the holidays!

Great Christmas season w/e in NYC!

Guest: Joan M.
Date of Stay: 12/09/11 Review Submitted: 12/28/11

Our party consisted of 3 adults. We loved the location of this apartment. It is in a very central location in the East Village, only 2 min walk to public transportation (F train and bus). Midtown attractions (Times Square, theatre district, Carnegie Hall, Rockefeller Center, Central Park) are less than 20 min. away by subway. The financial district (Ground Zero, ferries to Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty) is even closer. Cab fare from Penn Station (at rush hour!) was $13.00, tip included. This makes the Air Train from Newark or Air Train/Long Island Railroad from JFK to Manhattan, very convenient and considerably faster/more economical alternatives when compared with cabbing it. (NB: The 'flat rate' cab fare does not include tips or tolls.) The neighborhood is full of interesting places to explore and we thoroughly enjoyed the 15 minute walk to Union Square where we admired the work of artisans at the delightful Christmas Market. The service from Vanessa, our host, was exceptional. In addition to making herself available at all times, she emailed an information package at the time of booking. This is also available in the apartment and was invaluable in helping us make the most of our brief stay. Unfortunately we did not have the time to take advantage of the many neighborhood restaurants and amenities but directions to grocery stores and major Manhattan attractions were very helpful. The apartment is small (welcome to Manhattan!), but has ample space for 2 couples, was clean and the beds are very comfortable. It is extremely well-equipped. All we needed to purchase were perishables and groceries. It is only one floor up from ground (no elevator) and the entrance is secure. A couple of suggestions: 1. Because of the central location, 'street' noise, particularly on the weekend, may interfere with sleep. Inexpensive foam earplugs are a simple, effective solution. 2 The TKTS booth in Times Square is a great way to get discount tickets to same-day Broadway performances. It opens at 3 pm. However there is also one at the Jay St. Metro-Tech Centre in downtown Brooklyn. It opens at 11 am and will have a better selection. The F train takes you directly there, and the ride is shorter! Downtown and many of Brooklyn's neighborhoods are fun to explore. The view of Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge is spectacular. This property is a great alternative to the high-priced hotel accommodation in NYC. Enjoy your time in the 'Big Apple'!

The apartment is very well located and on the first floor which is not bad for carriying the luggage!! The bathroom is quite small specially the sink!!, but is ok just for a few days...the kitchen is good and Vanessa always leaves you some tea or coffee, and there is a deli just crossing the street!! The only "bad" thing of the apartment is that one of the rooms is quite noisy especially at night, anyway, the bed is good and after one day traveling around manhattan is not bad at all. Also, in winter the heat is suffocating!!! Finally, Vanessa is a very nice manager and always try to help you!!

Excellent Location, Charming Apartment

Guest: Dianne G. (Australia)
Date of Stay: 10/11/11 Review Submitted: 12/03/11

This charming apartment is situated in an excellent position in the middle of the East Village, has a secured entrance and is only one floor up from the street (No elevator). It is a short walk to the subway Line No 6 (Astor Place) and the bus (No M15), which travel between the Financial District and East Harlem is only a 2 minute walk away. The apartment is not the largest (but you are in New York, and real estate is at a premium) but it was clean and tidy. The bedroom were quite roomy and the beds were comfortable. The lounge and kitchen were adequate and well equipped. Vanessa was very accommodating in meeting us as we were later arriving that we expected. There are lots of excellent restaurant close by. Vanessa left a list of recommendations and we tried a couple,The Mermaid Inn (Seafood) and Franks (Italian) which were both excellent. There is also a fantastic bakery at the end of 4th Street (Panisi Bakery) where wer purchased the best Red Velvet Cupcakes I have every tasted. There is also a laundromat close by in 4th Street. Would highly recommend this place to any travelling to New York and wanting somewhere comfortable and convenient.

Owner response:Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed Mermaid and Frank -- two of my fave places!

A lot of restaurants and bar, busy night, just a little bit noisy from the big bedroom. It's a convenient place by walking. If we come back, it will this place again! Thank you Vanessa! :)

Myself and two friends stayed at Vanessa's East Village apartment for 10 nights in May 2011 and had a great time. The apartment was clean and just as described in the listing. Vanessa was extremely helpful and the location was perfect. Close to bars, restaurants and the subway. Not a lot more you could ask for when staying in the city that never sleeps. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to visit NY.

Excellent choice for living like a real New Yorker!

Guest: Cathy N. (North Carolina)
Date of Stay: 04/17/11 Review Submitted: 04/30/11

This apartment was awesome! The owner is super-responsive to emails, and she and her assistant were very easy to work with before and during the trip, and very helpful (I had to send a text about which way the key turned, and they answered immediately). Everything was just as described. Cab ride to Times Square at night around 10-13 bucks for four people. Subway just a couple of blocks away. There's a 24-hour convenience store very close for my teenagers' late night munchie needs. We walked everywhere in this neighborhood and were never scared, even at night. Real New Yorkers in this neighborhood...not hordes of tourists. The bedroom I chose was quiet. The other bedroom (which the girls chose) faced the street but it was relatively quiet, too (but don't you expect to hear taxi horns blowing in New York?!). Stop in at Paul's (Da Burger Joint) for a deelish greasy hamburger. As another reviewer said, it can get warm in the apartment because of the radiators, but open the patio door or the windows...and there are plenty of quiet fans. We loved the apartment and we would not hesitate to come back!

Owner response:Thanks so much Cathy! And glad you found Paul's -- it's the best burger joint in the neighborhood. Hope to have you back again! -- v

Excellent location, friendly and safe, with lots of places to eat and within easy reach of subway stations. The flat is cosy and comfortable but the main bedroom does give onto a lively street, which is great but can be a bit noisy at night. Vanessa was very efficient and accommodating (we had a late departure and she let us use the flat longer than stipulated in the agreement).

Owner response:Marie, such a pleasure to have you and so glad you enjoyed the apartment. :)

Thanks Vanessa for your hospitality! We had a great time and your apartment was perfect for our family of 5. The apartment definitely gave us the feel of real NY living! If you are a light sleeper you may have some trouble because you will experience the sounds of the city throughout the night. It didn't both any of us and we had absolutely no problems with the unit. The location was great - walking distance to Chinatown, LIttle Italy, grocery, subway, restaurants, etc.

Really enjoyed staying in Vanessa's apartment. There were 4 of us (2 first timers in NYC) and this cosy apartment was just what we needed. It was well equipped, warm and comfortable and perfectly located in an exciting, chic but unpretentious area - filled with lots of really great bars, restaurants and shops. Also it was conveniently located for exploring parts of the city - not only the obvious tourist attractions (which we did) but also the interesting side streets - all with their own identity. There's just so much more to do. So,when we come back, we'll be giving Vanessa a call!

Owner response:Thanks, Gordon. And you better believe I'll be calling YOU when I'm in Joburg! :)

Great 2 bedroom in lower east side

Guest: jws (Campbell CA USA)
Date of Stay: 02/23/11 Review Submitted: 03/01/11

My husband and 2 daughters and I spent 4 nights at the apartment in late February, enjoying New York city life. Vanessa was very responsive and helpful, both in booking and answering questions before and after we arrived at the apartment. The location is great - a quick walk to the F subway line, Little Italy, the Tenement Museum, and Canal Street and Chinatown. The apartment is above 2 bars and on a fairly busy street so it is noisy at night, but that is part of the NY experience. There were numerous restaurants and bars within walking distance. The apartment was clean and furnished with everything we needed. It was a little hot, but fine if we opened the windows. All in all a great value, since we needed 2 bedrooms, and a much better way to experience the City than a sterile generic hotel. I'd recommend it.

Won't go on too much in this review, as pretty much all has been covered so far in previous reviews. Vanessa was a great host, flexible when we arrived early, and very accommodating when we were sorting out our check out. Apartment with all the facilities you could need, basic supplies all provided, great location and plenty of space for 3 adults. Yes, can be a little noisy, but you are in NYC! Everything you need on the doorstep, and the 3 different subway lines within a 10 minute walk, the rest of the city is on your doorstep. We became locals in Dempsey's pub over the road within 2 days! (Can we get a refund for the time we spent in there????) Will definitely be back the next time either myself or any of my party are back in New York! Thanks again Vanessa.

Owner response:Love that you became locals at Dempsey's! They are great over there. Look forward to seeing you again soon!

This was a great experience from start to finish. Vanessa was flexible and had great information about the neighbourhood for us. The space was perfect for the five of us - three kids under 10 and 2 adults. Cozy but the three beds made it easy. Location was ideal, safe, quiet and the apartment was equipped with internet, TV, cooking gear, clean linens and towels. My only hesitation in recommending it is that I want it to be free when we go back... and we will stay here on future visits as long as it is available.

Owner response:Thanks, Sean. Book now! ;)

Great for hanging out in East Village

Guest: Tony (Edinburgh, Scotland)
Date of Stay: 10/04/10 Review Submitted: 10/12/10

We arrived from Edinburgh and were joined by 3 family members. Thgis apartment is compact but if you are out and about doing Manhatten then what more do you need. Everything was as Vanessa said it would be. The tips for local eateries and bars were well used and lived up to her recommendations. Take a good set of earplugs if you want to sleep - or join in the party in the streets below. And it is only up 1 flight. We especially recommend the Atlas Cafe across the road for great and cheap food with a freindly welcome. After 1 day we felt like locals and in the owrds of the man -- "I'll be back" can't do the accent though!

Owner response:"I'll be back..." in a kilt! Love it, and hope to see you in Scotland sometime in the near future. :)

The location was awesome with shops and restaurants within eyesight. Bars and grocery stores were abundant on every perimeter of the block. The apartment was cozy and contained everything needed for a relaxing getaway. Our host Vanessa was super fantastic, she went out of her way providing our group of 5 starving women (3pm breakfast) from Texas with a pizza and bottle of wine for our arrival to New York. She went through every corner of the apartment explaining where everything was, down to extra blaketrs for the sofa bed. I would recommend this place to anyone and I will return in April with my 11 yr old godson and some friends.

It's taken me too long to write this review but only because I've been a bit busy. The place was great. We had a great time and it was a good place to use as base camp as we explored New York. It's close to the subway station and we were quickly at the Museum Of Natural History. We also stayed close and found many great restaurants. But mostly we walked to SOHO, Chinatown and Little Italy. Not too bad of a walk. The place was clean and comfortable for 4 people. Vanessa was a great host also. Very flexible with our arrival and departure times. And here little book of places to eat was very helpful. Would easily stay there again.

Sweet East Village Apartment

Guest: Mel (Melbourne, Australia)
Date of Stay: 06/10/10 Review Submitted: 07/01/10

Sourcing an apartment in the East Village for rent rather than hotel accommodation from all the way over here in Australia was a tall order but fortunately we found Vanessa and her funky apartment. The apartment was clean and contained everything we needed for our 10 day stay, the private balcony was a bonus. Situated so close to St. Marks Square and all that it (and surrounding areas) had to offer was exactly what we were looking for and very quickly the amazing East Village vibe begins to infect you. Spice restaurant and St. Marks Bar were two of our favourite places to eat and drink but with so much choice around you are sure to find something to suit, for whatever mood you are in. On weekends the apartment can get loud, over and above the regular expected street noise, due to it's proximity to two nightclubs so you may have to either wear ear plugs to sleep or go downstairs and join the party! Thanks to Vanessa for being such a generous and accommodating host. Her very attentive nature and the apartment handbook she provided ensured that we knew all the great spots to eat, drink and everything else that goes along with staying in the East Village.

Owner response:Thanks, Melissa! So happy you enjoyed the neighborhood -- it's my favorite in the city.

We stayed for 6 nights at this apartment two weeks ago and we can't think of a better place to stay for the price. It was clean, warm and fully featured. It's possible to find some really nice places to eat near the apartment, some of them recommended by Vanessa, who was an excelent host. We found we we're to steps close to almost everything we wanted to see. P.D. Vanessa, you should add Jewel Bako to your restaurant's list, really awesome japanese food, also, Corner Bistro is not so far away and we tasted some great burgers there ;-)

Owner response:I absolutely will add Jewel Bako and Corner Bistro to the "apartment handbook." Those are two great spots! Glad you found 'em. :)

I throughly enjoyed my stay in Vanessa's apt. Everything we needed was provided for us. We arrived at an early hour in the morning so the keys were sent to us prior to our arrival so we could get right into the apt. If we had any questions they were answered right away. The handbook she provides for the apartment is so helpful it tells where restaurants, grocery stores and subways are in relation to the apartment location. It was a hassle free stay. I would advise that you make sure you study the subway guides some of the subways don't run on weekends. If you prefer taking a taxi, there are always plenty around. Thanks so much Vanessa for everything I definitely will rent from you again on future trips to NYC.

Owner response:Thanks, Krissi! Looking forward to you coming back (and staying at the duplex!). So glad you enjoyed the visit.

Date of Stay: 04/17/10 Review Submitted: 04/25/10

This was my first experience not staying in a hotel in NYC. I really was unsure about the whole thing having four teenagers with me. My son actually argued with me and wanted to stay in a hotel, but once he got settled he felt like he and his buddies had their own apartment in the big apple. You could walk to great restaurants, parks and just enjoy city life within blocks of the apartment. I like to workout and there was a fitness center(only $10 per day) outside my door as well as a number of Churches. I didn't even use the subway except to ride with my son to Times Square one night and that was close by. We are also very picky eaters and with a grocery store close by we were able to eat in and save money. It was truly my best experience in NYC so far and I would definitely be back. Also my host made everything so easy as we made these plans on the way there. The only thing you have to be careful with is parking. Read the signs and know when you are suppose to feed the meter, even on Saturday until 7pm and what side of the road. Sunday all day is easy. Book before I do again!

Owner response:Thanks, Michael! So happy you and the boys had a good stay in the city. Come back soon.

Excellent choice for one week-end or for a week. A huge choice of good bar and restaurants along the streets near of the appartment (the list given by the owner is great). Thanks to the Subway at 5mn, Brooklyn, Harlem and Bronx are near (maybe 50 mn to go to the Bronx zoo, 10/15mn for Brooklyn and 30mn for Harlem). The flat is clean and comfortable, the owner serious, comprehensive and ready to help. I hope that my english is okay… Anyway this apartment is perfect for those who prefer the comfort rather than luxury Pierre C.

We spent Christmas at Vanessa's apartment and we had the most wonderful time. The apartment was so warm and cosy - a haven to return to after exploring the city. Very comfortable, had everything we needed - well stocked with all the essentials and more. Even cooked Christmas dinner for much missed family and new friends. Very convenient for exploring New York, walking distance to Union Square, lots of nice restaurants close by. Would definitely recommend this accommodation.

Owner response:Thanks so much Karen and family! Come back to NYC soon. :)

vanessa's apartment was exactly as described in the photos. it is within walking distance to great restaurants/shopping/pubs & the subway. everything was just a short walk away and we loved it! vanessa was a great host - since we had an early morning arrival, vanessa arranged to have the apartment keys mailed to us so that we could go straight to the apartment with an early check in. she also provided us with a listing of recommended restaurants/shops. there is a bar located on the bottom floor of the apartment complex and the master bedroom faces the main street so we did hear a lot of noise at night. however, we were so exhausted from our daily outings that we fell right asleep regardless of the noise. plus we didn't mind it much as we enjoy getting a feel of how the locals live=). overall a great stay and would totally recommend vanessa's apartment to our friends. thanks again for your hospitality vanessa!!!!

Owner response:Thanks, Christabelle! So glad you enjoyed your stay and hope you're planning your next trip already. ;)

This apartment is in such a great location. There is a great wine bar across the street from the building, a fabulous Italian restaurant down the street, good coffee around the corner, and the best burger I have ever had in my entire life (and I've had a few burgers) a few blocks away. The night life is amazing. The people in the neighborhood are friendly and helpful if you have any questions. The apartment is very well equipped and comfortable. We brought our 20 month old baby and had no problems. Cute expensive Italian baby clothes store around the corner! The neighborhood is very nice, yet east village supercool.

Four of us stayed at Vanessa's apartment in Aug and we had a great time. The apartment is clean, cute, compact and the location was perfect for us. It's close to some great bars and restaurants and we love the lower east side. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to stay in a buzzing location.

This apartment was fabulous. It's a couple of blocks to the Subway and Whole Foods and there are all kinds of great restaurants and bars near by. Vanessa was a pleasure to coordinate with and was very helpful. The apartment had everything you need, towels, bathroom neccessities, cooking utensils, pretty much anything we needed we were able to find in a drawer or cabinet. The deck was perfect for the smokers in our group. The only draw back we had was the street noise you can hear in the large bedroom, but if you go to sleep late enough, the noise tends to die down in the early morning hours. The people that slept in the small bedroom and the living room didn't hear the noise at all. I will recommend this apartment to everyone I know that visits NY and I will be contacting Vanessa again when we can make it back out that way. It was so nice to have a comfortable place to return to at the end of our tiring days and nights. The beds were better than ours at home!

It's always great to spend time in NYC and Vanessa's apartment was the perfect base for three friends who shared the apartment. The apartment is clean, comfortable, and furnished with everything you need. The location is terrific - minutes from several subway lines, near a great Whole Foods, and walking distance of quite a few fun neighborhoods. You can be anywhere in Manhattan in 20 minutes. It was a pleasure making arrangements with Vanessa, who is a welcoming and friendly host. We will be back!

This was a great apartment in the heart of the East Village. The apartment was very nice, clean and spacious by New York standards. The neighborhood is trendy and very cool. The restaurants in the area are fantastic. Vanessa was so sweet and helpful. I will recommend this apartment to friends and family, and I will stay here on my next trip to NYC.

Great location shops, bars and restaurants all right there. Much better than going back to a boring hotel room. Four of us stayed in the apartment and it was comfortable the noise didn't really bother us as we were so tired but could be an issue if you're a light sleeper

A nice efficient apartment in the middle of East Village. Great restaurants and bars just around the corner. A wonderful bakery with fresh croissants and cupcakes every day at the end of the street... The bars and traffic can be noisy at night, but there are enough earplugs available. The beds are really comfortable and since you are tired at the end of the day exploring NYC you will sleep anyway ;-)

Owner response:Thanks Jeannette! And they actually CLOSED the bar downstairs so now the apartment is more quiet than ever... so now you'll have to come back! :)

What a great apartment! 5 of us stayed here for 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Vanessa gave us some excellent recommendations and made us feel really welcome. The place can get a bit noisy at night from the nearby bars, but it really didn't bother us at all. We highly recommend this apartment, in the perfect neighbourhood in NYC.

Owner response:Thanks, Caitlin! You girls were awesome and I'd recommend you as guests to anyone!

This two bedroom apartment has a great location for restaurants, subways, and shopping. Vanessa was very accessible, responsive, and accommodating. The apartment was well stocked, clean, with comfortable, warm beds even on the coldest days. The pullout bed in the living room was also very comfortable. I liked the idea that the price was all inclusive, and that if you leave the apartment clean there is no cleaning deposit, which can vary from $50 to $100 at other VRBO rentals. Be ready for noise in this first floor walkup, however, from the street and the bar below. (3 Older PNW Ladies)

My family of four stayed at this NYC rental in December for a week. The apartment was adorable! Clean, tidy and comfortable. And the location couldn't be beat -- great restaurants and fun shopping all around. Thanks for being such a lovely and accommodating hostess, Vanessa! We're trying to return back to NYC next winter and want to make it a tradition to say at your place in the E.Village.

This is a beautiful apartment located in one of the best areas in NYC, I think. Though this is not very noisy street, ask to Vanessa about the music of the bars located below the apartment. I think the loud music is not a problem but every person has a preference about that. The beds are ok: good size and very confortable. The apartment has been painted recently and has new furniture so it looks very chic.

I stayed in this amazing apartment in November 2008 with my wife and it was perfect. It was extremely clean (linens & bathroom), cute and in the best location. We walked to SoHo & Little Italy and had the best Italian food at a place called, Max. I highly recommend this vacation rental to anyone looking for a place in Manhattan.

My wife and I along with two friends stayed at this apt. for 4 nights and the apartment and service we received exceeded our expectations. The host was very helpful, friendly and courteous and even gave us some great recommendations for things to do in the area. The apt. was clean and cozy with all the amenities and a great deck. And the location couldn't have been better with everything close by. It was our first trip to New York and we had an amazing time. We definitely recommend this place for anyone who wants to be in a great apt. in a great location. Thanks Vanessa!

Owner response:Thanks, Cesar and friends! You were the best guests a homeowner could ask for. Come back soon!
