Near Glacier National Park, Kalispell and Big Fork - Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States. At 28 miles long, 15 miles wide and 300 feet deep, Flathead was originally formed by a glacier and is now continuously fed by the Swan and Flathead rivers.

The lake invites all types of water sports and many boat launches and marinas offer rentals or boat tours. On the southwest end, you can make your way across to Wildhorse Island for a day hike, beach lounging or watching the island’s many bighorn sheep.

Near Flathead Lake you can visit:
- Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge – a wonderful place to view wildlife and some of Montana’s beautiful landscape. Take in glacial potholes and hundreds of species of birds.
- Jewel Basin Hiking area – devoted to hiking only this 35 miles of trail (including 25 lakes) is a great way to enjoy a peaceful hike.
- Glacier National Park – home to breathtaking views of peaks, valleys and ridges all naturally formed by glaciers. You’re likely to see wildlife such as deer, elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, wolves and grizzly and black bears.
