Lower Carlton house description
'Shutters' is a new but traditionally designed house on the stunning west coast of Barbados. Within 5 minutes walk of the quiet but stunning Reeds Bay (see photo), 'Shutters' has the added advantage of a private pool and garden. All the rooms are spacious and airy, but the house is fully air-conditioned for those who prefer the cold!
'Shutters' is in the village of Lower Carlton which is between Holetown to the south, and Speightstown to the north. Consequently it is within easy reach of all the fabulous bars and restaurants the west (Platinum) coast has to offer. The John Moore Bar is a local bar within 7 mins walk of the house. Lower Carlton has a fishmarket which sells the most delicious (and cheap) fish, and a fruit and veg stall which sells local produce. There is also a small mini-mart. For additional shopping Bridgetown, Holetown and Speightstown are a quick bus ride away.
There are a wide variety of activities available up and down the west coast, and the wild surfing water of the east coast is about 40 minutes drive away. The house is 40 minutes from the airport.
'Shutters' is tastefully furnished and comfortable. The housekeeper will clean the house and change the bed linen and towels twice a week. The garden and pool are tended to weekly.

Little bit of heaven
Little bit of heaven
Myself and Husband have just spent a month at Shutters. What a house. From the moment we arrived and were shown around the house and garden with pool we just loved it..The garden is so lush and alive with hummingbirds and banana birds and the cheeky blackbirds. We had a few days rain and it was so lovely to sit under the covered patio in 28deg watching the rain,it felt so good. The house is so lovely. We had a choice of four bedrooms because there was only two of us.The upstairs front bedroom is so romantic but we chose one of the back rooms overlooking the garden and we could also see the ocean from the veranda. We used to sit on the veranda at night reading our kindles before going to bed and all you hear are the tree frogs and crickets,it truly was tropical magic. The house has everything and more.I always take a non stick frying pan away with me and my own chef knives because in the past I have stayed in places where the knives would not cut bread and the non stick pan did not have any non stick left on it.Shutters had it all.The neighbours are also lovely and helpful.Mario who lives next door will even cut your hair for you.The area is great for eating out, there are so many restaurants. On our last night we ate at Seacats and had the biggest lobster I have ever eaten,it was amazing. The beaches on the west coast are lovely.A few can get a bit busy.Mullins for one but Reeds beach at the bottom of the road is very quiet. So when you see the photographs of Shutters and the pool looks so blue and the garden so green and the house so lovely, thats what your getting,a really lovely vacation house that you don't want to leave.

Owner response: Thank you for your fantastic review. I'm so glad you enjoyed all the things that I love most about Shutters and Barbados (even the pots and pans!). We look forward to your return. J
I have recently come back from a brilliant week away with friends. Barbados is beautiful, and the house was perfect. The house is very well equipped with all the comforts from home you may wish for, and just a short stroll to the first of many stunning beaches. Regular housekeeping added to our comfort. There are two convenience stores within the same road as the house, with very friendly, helpful owners. Jefferson serves great food at the weekends too! We used the local buses most days during our stay. The bus stop is located at the end of the road (Max. 5 minute walk). They were regular, very cheap, and the locals were more than happy to help us get to our desired destination anytime. The well maintained pool and gardens at the house are perfect for a lovely relaxing day, followed by a BBQ on the patio in the evening, with the pool lit up. There are plenty of places to explore all over the island, and generally something for everyone, young or old, adventurous or relaxing. I absolutely recommend a holiday, staying at Shutters! We had a fabulous time, and I hope to come back soon. Many thanks to Jen and Fi, who gave us plenty of hints and tips before we went. The Girls. xxx

I have visited Shutters on many many occasions and as soon as I return to the UK each time I book again! This house is a real gem, beautifully furnished and equipped with everything you could possibly need, clean, tidy, perfectly located and above all feels like home. It is really spacious and has a fabulous outside decking area overlooking the pool and luscious gardens. You will be extremely well looked after whilst you are there - housekeeper, cleaner, gardener and pool man all visit regularly. I cannot recommend this house highly enough and can't wait to return!

For Us - Perfection
For Us - Perfection
Prior to arriving in Barbados we attended a family reunion in Colorado where we enjoyed an action packed week with six of our lovely grandchildren. Shutters was to be our calm after the events of the previous week and boy oh boy did Shutter’s deliver! Jennifer arranged everything, from car hire to making sure basic provisions – milk, bread, butter etc. – were waiting for us when we arrived. The location of the house was perfect – away from the busy tourist areas, yet a five minute walk to the beach at Reeds Bay where we watched the sun melt into the sea most evenings. Because the Folkestone Marine Park, near Holetown, was closed for refurbishments, we found the best snorkelling to be just behind the local fish market! No need to set an alarm – the local rooster makes a nice alternative to the horrible beep, beep, beep of an alarm clock -not that we were planning on setting an alarm! So, a typical day for us would be, 1. Breakfast on the balcony watching the sea and listening to the neighbourhood beginning to wake up. 2. A quick change into bathing suits and a dip in the lovely, refreshing swimming pool. 3. Grab a book to read, a sun lounger, and get comfortable in the beautiful, tropical gardens. 4. Repeat steps one and two. The biggest decision of the day was where to have our evening meal! While this all might sound a bit boring, it was absolute perfection for us. Huge thank you to Jennifer for letting us stay in your beautiful Barbadian home.

Perfect place to spend our honeymoon with our family
Perfect place to spend our honeymoon with our family
This property was more than ideal for our week long honeymoon with our two sets of families. The house was exceptional in appearance, with its timber clad walls and painted concrete blocks, gave it a modern, contemporary edge. The rooms were all of good size, the kitchen was well equipped and the 3 bathrooms were suitable for a group of 8. The added bonus of the pool in the rear garden, made the stay more relaxing than initially planned. A short walk from the property is a pretty beach, which if you are fortunate with timing, you may see a turtle or two laying eggs or swimming in the sea. Also, at the bottom of the road is a bus stop that takes you from one side of the island to the other for an astonishingly cheap price of BD$2, and runs until the early hours of the morning, but I warn you that their driving can be quite questionable at times. We made the most of the bus service whilst we were there, as the price of taxis in the Caribbean are extremely expensive. Next door to the house is a small convenient store, which sold all the basic necessities at not a dissimilar price to the big supermarkets on the island. Also on the road is a convenient store/internet cafe/grill shack, where on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights you can experience some good tasting grilled fish and chicken, and the best macaroni pie in Barbados at a competitive price. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property because it was located in an area which is less touristy, which enabled us to get to socialize with the locals, but at the same time it was well connected by bus to the capital and other areas of attraction - beaches, restaurant, bars and tourist towns etc, so we weren't denied a taste of what the typical holidaymaker would expect to experience - best of both worlds! Our stay coincided with mango season, so the trees on the road were filled with fruit. Also at times, we saw monkeys running across the road - amazing!!! If I were to suggest improvements, then I would say that maybe install internet and cable television, but at the same time we didn't miss those luxuries.

40th birthday vacation
40th birthday vacation
We had a really great time. The house was everything we expected it to be. It was clean and well-maintained. The kids loved the pool and spent a lot of time in there. The roosters were loud but we came prepared with ear plugs and after a few days didn't notice it too much. The location was great in the village, we got to experience the "real Barbados". All of the neighbours were quite friendly. Our favorite excursion was snorkeling with the turtles, what a great experience. We also enjoyed doing short trips to different beaches on the island. My favorite was Bottom's Bay, it had such a secluded feel to the beach. Of course we also loved the beach down the street from the house, it was perfect for snorkeling. We saw so many different kinds of fish. The owner, Jennifer, was really great, always prompt in responding to our questions and providing us with recommendations. Overall we were very pleased with the rental and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Owner response: Thank you so much for taking the time to do a review Barbara. I'm so pleased you had a great holiday (and birthday). I love our beach down the road, but I'm glad you got over to the east coast to experience the spectacular beaches over there too. We look forward to your next stay. Jen
Shutters - the place to stay :)
Shutters - the place to stay :)
Shutters is in a great location between Holetown and Speightstown and so easy to visit our favourite beaches - Mullins (recommend a trip down the coast on the boat with Malibu) and Ramshackle. It's a large house, very clean, very airy, with spacious bedrooms and bathrooms and just as seen in the brochure photograhs. The lounge is also large, with plenty of seating and has an open kitchen area, conducive for socialising which we do a lot of. And the terrace, well, I visit with friends and it's just so great to sit out in the evenings around the table eating and drinking, chatting and chilling, and we do the same in the day should it rain(!). The garden is well tended surrounded by trees and flowers that attract hummingbirds, the pool is great for a dip to cool down and there's a lawn area at the back to sunbathe and with clothes lines - hidden behind the trees. Shutters feels like home the minute you walk through the door, the manager, is always very welcoming and the cleaners are great. We hire a car and there's plenty of parking for us and friends. Places we love to visit are the East Coast with lunch at the Roundhouse, Sunday Lunch at Lone Star on the West Coast. Number 1 bar north of Mullins and the restaurant across the road - name escapes me - fantastic food tho. Beautiful beach to visit is Bottom Bay. Friday night at the bar in Lime Grove is a must for people watching. The local people who live in the area are very friendly and shout a greeting. I've visited Barbados, with the same friends, many times over 14 years and for the last few years this is now the house we choose to rent and actually wouldn't look anywhere else.

We had a wonderful time staying at Shutters! The house is huge and so lovely and it was so nice to stay somewhere that was so comfortable for the whole family (guests ages ranging from 4yo - 75yo). I really appreciate staying in a place that is so generous with things like beach towels, coat hangers, tea towels and kitchen things. The kids loved the pool, the garden is much bigger than the photos show. The view out to the sea is gorgeous and the upper level balcony gets a lovely breeze (i found myself escaping there when the sun, or the kids proved too much). We have travelled to Barbados many times and this house is near our favourite beach on the island. Everything is really well maintained and looked after - it was such a great friendly neighborhood too! We cannot wait to stay here again

Fantastic Family Vacation
Fantastic Family Vacation
Having been to Barbados on our honeymoon, my husband and I made our return visit with our grown children, and we couldn’t have chosen a more remarkable spot. Shutters is absolutely beautiful, we loved the scenic views from the bedroom balconies each morning and enjoyed having our breakfast and evening barbeques on the patio overlooking the pool and lovely back gardens which provided complete privacy. The bedrooms were lovely and with 3 full baths, there was never a line up for the facilities. The neighborhood was friendly and helpful, especially Jenny at the store next door and a lovely neighboring lady Caramen who made us feel so welcome upon our late arrival. The beach nearby (Reeds Bay) was beautiful and quiet, and snorkeling couldn’t have been better provided by Mark and Laron found at the quaint local beachside restaurant Surfside in Holetown. We rented a car for the week to enjoy all the island had to offer, however, buses did run very frequently with a stop just outside the house. We quickly became absorbed in the Bajan culture with the early morning chatter of the locals as they began their days, the birds and neighboring roosters which reminded us of back home. Our children filled the week with amazing site seeing, history lessons (our photos are remarkable) and shopping, while entertaining us with simple scrabble games and relaxing swims in the pool in the evenings, they are already busily planning a return visit for next year. We highly recommend Shutters, the staff and owner Jennifer went beyond to make our stay comfortable, relaxing and memorable. We will definitely be back for a longer stay, and have recommend Shutters to all our friends and acquaintances, what a fantastic holiday!

Owner response: Thank you so much for your review; you have painted a very vivid picture of Shutters and Barbados. One of my favourite things to do over there is to sit on the side of the pool with my feet dangling in the water, drinking my morning coffee and listening to the birds as the sun comes up over the garden. You seem to have noticed all the things I love. We look forward to your return trip. Best wishes, Jen
My family and I recently stayed at Shutters and we had a fantastic time. The house is lovely, the area is great (provided you aren't looking for 24 x 7 partying !!) Local fish fry fantastic, local bar entertaining. Less than 5 minutes walk from a wonderful beach Towns of Speightstown and Holetown are only a five minute, $2, whitenuckle bus ride away. Both of these have some great restaurants and bars. The wildlife is plentiful if a little noisy !! We had hundreds of birds in the garden including a baby heron that came looking for fish in the pool every morning !! The noise from the cockerel, birds and local dogs can take some getting used to. If you are a light sleeper definitely recommend taking some ear plugs for the dawn chorus !! All in all a great holiday in a lovely part of this beautiful island.

Why the Owner Chose Lower Carlton:
We chose to have Shutters in Lower Carlton because I'd visited Barbados many times and wanted to have a house with a Bajan feel away from the massive hotels. It turns out to have been a wise choice because the neighbourhood is very safe and the neighbours extremely friendly and helpful. Many of our guests leave the house on first name terms with the neighbours.
