La Vigne is a unique small house tucked away in a tranquil corner of the centre of Sarlat. After a day wandering through the lanes of Sarlat, shopping and tasting, or visiting the many other wonderful villages in the Dordogne, enjoy an apéritif in its comfortable living room, or on one of the two balconies.
While La Vigne is in the centre of town, it is totally private, and not overlooked by anyone. Recently renovated, with a new kitchen and bathroom, the house is furnished in traditional French style, featuring period wallpapers, and is perfect for two to four people.
The bright and efficient kitchen is equipped with everything you will need during your stay. The living/dining room, with exposed stone walls, tile floor and oriental rug, invites you to relax in the comfortable leather furniture, or to gather round the antique pine table.
Breakfast on the sunny ground floor balcony overlooking the neighboring roofs is particularly enjoyable, with the odor of fresh croissants floating up from the nearby bakery. Useful amenities on this floor include a powder room with toilet, and a laundry room.
Upstairs are two bedrooms, one with a queen size bed, and one with two twin beds. The large North American style bathroom has an extra-long bath, a large separate shower, a sink/vanity unit, and a toilet. The second balcony leads off the hall, and offers superb views of the hills around Sarlat.
Just around the corner are a bakery and a newspaper shop, while only two minutes away are the many cafés, restaurants, shops, and historic sites of Sarlat’s old town. There is ample public parking nearby, and the house itself has a private, underground parking space a few minutes away.
Sarlat is one of the most fascinating and beautifully restored towns in France, giving the atmosphere and appearance of another age, with narrow steep alleys flanked by medieval and Renaissance houses in honey-coloured stone. It has more historic, listed buildings than any other place of its size in France, and is the only town to be given three stars by the Michelin guides solely for the quality and ambience of its old town. It has one of the biggest weekly markets in France, which takes over most of the town every Saturday. On Summer evenings you can stroll through the old town, enjoying various 'animations' such as mimes and musicians, by the gaslight lamps. All Summer there are wonderful music festivals in nearby towns, while Sarlat has an open-air theatre festival in the market square in late July, and an international film festival in October.
The Dordogne - or Périgord - region is one of the most beautiful parts of France, and is well known to the French for its food and wine, leading Carlux - Le Pontetto the saying - "En Périgord, on mange bien, on boit bien." As the home of truffles and foie gras, it is an area where you can eat extremely well in countless excellent and inexpensive restaurants. Just east of Bordeaux, it is also noted for its own vineyards, producing Bergerac, Pécharmant, and Monbazillac. For the days you wish to relax at home, local markets provide treats such as strawberries, asparagus, walnut cake, olives and cheese.
Legend has it that God, passing through the region with a sack full of châteaux, slipped on the hills of the Fishing boats Dordogne, and châteaux poured out over the countryside. In fact, during the Hundred Years' War, England and France built 1001 châteaux up and down the river. Today, from villages classified as among the most beautiful in France, mediaeval fortresses such as Beynac and Castelnaud face each other, while Renaissance châteaux nestle in the hills.
