Interlochen studio description
Hideaway II, lower level family room, is surrounded by woods and a beautiful garden. Situated on a narrow isthmus between two crystal clear lakes, two minutes from the world-famous Interlochen Center for the Arts. One block north is the Interlochen State Park, largest and oldest in Michigan. The Park provides boat launches to both lakes, playgrounds for children and a large sandy beach. Many of our guests walk through this beautiful park to the Interlochen Center. Others swim, fish, water ski, skate on these lakes and canoe the Betsie River.
Hideaway II is smack in the middle of the Grand Traverse, a tourist destination for the Heartland. It is 15 minutes SW of Traverse City and NE of Crystal Mountain (golf/ski). Within a 40 mile radius are over 30 golf courses and 25 vineyards. Also within this radius: majestic Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore Park, rated most beautiful site in U.S. In Interlochen & beyond a wide variety of restaurants and taverns. Over ten festivals. Amazing!
Interlochen Center for the Arts: The Interlochen Center for the Arts welcomes 2,500 campers to the Interlochen Arts Camp each summer from two to six weeks. The ranking World Youth Symphony has played for U.S. Presidents and at the Olympics. They play for up to 4,000 people each Sunday evening beginning in late June. But there are hundreds of performances by junior, intermediate and senior campers. The Summer Festival features a wide-range of professional performers all summer long.
The Interlochen Arts Academy hosts up to 500 high school students from all over the world as well. This nine month program combines specialization in the performing and visual arts with a solid academic curriculum. Your hosts at Hideawy II often attend three performances a week throughout the year. We feel you will enjoy dance, theater, orchestra, band, creative writing, fine arts, cinematography and the lively spirit of the students. Demi Moore/BruceWillis & Robin Williams stayed with us when their daughter & son attended the Academy.
Wine Tasting: The Government of Michigan markets its nearly 40 wineries throughout the nation. Most are in the Grand Traverse region, especially the peninsulas of Grand Traverse County and Leelanau Counties, both just a short drive to the north. These wineries feature wine tasting and our guests have reported visiting up to 20 wineries over a weekend. The vineyard owners are friendly and the wine industry of Michigan is growing rapidly.
Skiing and Golf: Hideaway II is in the middle of some of the finest skiing east of the Mississippi. Crystal Mountain, Schuss Mountain, Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands, Nubs Knob, The Homestead and smaller resorts are all accessible from Interlochen. Skiers from Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois join Michiganders on these slopes each winter.
Each of these ski resorts feature golf along with a host of other golf courses. The Interlochen 18 hole golf course is five minutes away, but all are relatively close.

About the owner: Your hosts, Barbara and Gordon Evans, ran the bed and breakfast across the street for 14 years. Gordon was president of International House in NYC for 11 years while Barbara taught in two private schools. In 1982, Gordon retired from the Senior Foreign Service after 25 years, mostly in South Asia and West Africa. Barbara came to Interlochen's then National Music Camp in 1950 from Swarthmore, PA. Gordon grew up in western New York State.
Why the Owner Chose Interlochen:
Hideaway II is the closest rental place to the Interlochen Center for the Arts. It is two minutes by car or a leisurely 20 minute walk through the Interlochen State Park. Hideaway II features over 300 boats in painted pictures and photos. The Evanses completed a 5,250 mile cruise in their boat returning to Traverse City from Florida in 1994. Hideaway II is in the center of the beautiful Grand Traverse. In 2013 a Norwegian Cottage was added for two additional adults. It celebrates the hosts' marriage in Oslo, Norway in 1955.
The Unique Benefits at this Studio:
Hideaway II will be one of the most unique and quiet places you will ever stay in. You are welcome to sit and eat on the back deck in the center of our beautiful garden. Hideaway II's full kitchen is well supplied, but the Grand Traverse has over 50 restaurants. The Norwegian Cottage permits an additional couple to stay near Hideaway II.
