Described by Aldous Huxley as 'the most beautiful lake in the world,' Lake Atitlan is a breathtaking cool and tropical expanse of water, dramatic cliffs and villages. Our estate, on the roadless north shore, has a parrot's eye view of 3 dormant volcanic peaks. Switzerland meets the Caribbean!
Pamakanya is a 15 minute boat ride from the little town of Panajachel. Take a public boat (they run all day) or hire a private launch for about $15. Pamakanya, is a work of art, literally. It's a bewitching maze of stone steps, walks and patios tucked into shady gardens, built over fifteen years by a renowned architect and a gifted local stonemason. Fruit grows all around. The dock, flanked by lovely lawns, is perfect for jumping off into clear waters or into our kayaks--paddle to nearby restaurants for smoothies, meals and fru-fru drinks or take a tour along the gorgeous coast.
The houses: everything from towels to coffeemakers, hammocks to couches. Fridges, bottled water, hot showers...
Overview: The main house, with fully stocked kitchen, extensive bath and shower, living room and more, sleeps up to five in a bedroom and loft. The dining table on the sunny porch that will be your Atitlan headquarters, can squeeze in up to 13 tortilla smackers with plenty of room for lounging in over the view. (Andres, the caretaker, will show you where to pick some fresh limes and tart oranges from the garden for a rum drink, too).
Rental party size has ranged from one to fifteen. The main house alone is perfect for one to four/five people. If you have a larger group, two adjacent guest bungalows are available, with studio setup steps away for four more people each. Each has its own bath, hot shower, kitchen supplies, and, of course, covered patio with ageless vista.
More about days at Pamakanya: The upper house boasts one of the best views on the lake. The lower house is closest to the dock and makes a great base for a day of swimming and kayaking in the four provided kayaks. Our days often begin with a plunge into the lake followed by a steaming outdoor shower at the lower house. If you prefer your hot water straight from nature, thermal hot springs seep into the lake at the base of the dock.
After a few days, when you’re ready to pull yourself away from the black hole of relaxation that grips the house, take a hike to the next village for a swim at the pool or restaurant meal or some Internet time. Or catch one of the public boats that ply the shore every half hour to visit one of the many unique and lovely villages and towns that ring the lake. Or call for a private boat and take a tour.
Luxury adventure travel: Be adventurous! Live it up! At the same time...Pamakanya is perfect for highly active people, world class loungers and everyone in between. High altitude--yet close to the equator so it's not too hot--not too cold--flowers and fruit and fresh veggies year round.
A housekeeper/babysitter/cook--Maria, is available on as as needed basis, for about $13 dollars per day. She can give cooking lessons, or just plain cook a wide range of delicious meals, including vegetarian specialties.

12 of us stayed here in July 2011. It was one of my favorite vacations. The houses had everything needed to just move in. It was fun taking a boat shuttle back and forth to Panajachel when needed. The lake is stunning. It was so relaxing to float around on an inflatable and just soak in the sun. I would highly recommend Pamakanya! And YES! there were thermal springs around the shoreline.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

this is an amazing place and well stocked with anything you could ever imagine needing. deep water for swimming right off the dock and even its own thermal waters on the shore. we all loved it!!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
