This very special house has a unique position within the village and some of the finest views. Spacious and yet cosy the whole house is full of pleasant surprises. Made of local stone and built into the cliff face. Inside the red front door a well equipped working kitchen leads into the spacious dining room, with exposed beams and wide oak planked flooring.
There is plenty of china, cutlery and glassware, dishes and cooking equipment. Look out for the troglodyte fireplace in the kitchen that has been carved out of the rock face by some ancient residents! Comfortable leather sofas beside a drinks trolley for pre-dinner aperitifs are within sight of the chef with an iPod music system. The large dining table has six chairs and all the windows have views of the river Dordogne.
The stairs to the first floor are set beside the exposed rock at the back of the house. The sitting room features a massive fireplace, a wood burning stove and comfortable leather seating. On the wall is a large television with Freesat HD TV, a DVD player. There is a door to a fairytale balcony with a wrought iron railing and a wonderful sheltered view across the village. Along the hallway there is a bedroom with a large double bed. A second bedroom has twin beds, between the two there is a spacious family bathroom with a bath and walk in shower. On the second floor is a further bedroom with a large double bed and a second bathroom. Every effort has been made for your comfort with cushions, throws and books, DVDs and games and a broadband internet connection should you wish to stay in touch.
Through the French doors you will find the garden and terrace. A small grassed area and shady trees through the rose arch to the unique paved terrace, arguably the best view in the village, uninterrupted and panoramic. Edged with wrought iron railings it is hard not to want to spend all your time here. The teak dining chairs are stored inside the house with all the cushions, a barbeque on the terrace with an outdoor dining table and a parasol.

Peace, beauty, tranquillity and comfort – and that’s just the wife! No, seriously, what more could one ask for on holiday - a house of character in a village and location with bags of it. You get the view up and down the river from a vantage point half way up the cliff. The village is very popular with tourists but you are an easy walk above it all. We never saw any bats but the crows roost in the cliff face above you so it’s more rewarding to look out than up. We’re coming to stay again so it’s time I wrote this.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We had booked the property for 7 nights but only stayed for 3 nights. The location in the village of La Roque-Gageac is picture perfect however, the description on this website failed to mention that the other feature of the house built into the cliff side is that you have the pleasure of getting up close and personal with the local bats as on the third night a couple made their presence known from a cavity in one of the bedrooms by flying into us while we were sleeping. The manager of the property did offer to try and have them removed but with my wife and two young daughters the damage was done and no one felt comfortable staying and wondering when the next one would appear at night. So if you like bats the property is perfect. Also our experience was that contrary to the property description there is no wifi.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/5

If only the Icelandic volcano could have ash-ed us in France....After arriving later than planned we found a truly special location. The character of your home is astounding. We enjoyed our stay at your home immensely but could have easily spent the whole vacation on the patio! The Perigourd is so inviting that will need to come back, Thank you so much.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

We just stayed here in July 2010. The description of the property is accurate. The kitchen is very well appointed. The house is well decorated, The beds are comfortable and the linens are lovely. The view off the balcony is just as described. The property was clean, considering it's built into the rocks on a steep hill. The owners were responsive to my questions. When were visited, it was quite warm (mid 90's F) but the house stayed cool as it was built into the rocks. We spent one day exploring the villages and one day cruising on the Dordogne. It is very well situated, and very close to Sarlat. The only drawback is that the house is quite musty, mainly on the first floor (out of 3). I'm not sure if the smell would subside if the windows were kept open. It's just something to consider if you have problems with this. Otherwise, I would recommend the property.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.
