This is a unique village property in the village of Capestang,in the heart of the Minervois region, famous for its canal, wine and spectacular scenery. The house itself is bright, airy and beautifully decorated with top quality items. The dining area seats six very comfortably and the outside terrace is ideal for al fresco eating and sipping a nice glass of local wine. The kitchen is well equipped with a professional cooker, and quality utensils. The front veranda has a table and chairs and ideal for watching village life go by. Both terraces have views over the Cathedral.
The Canal du Midi runs right through the center of Capestang and it boasts having the smallest bridge on the whole canal system. The village has a great variety of shops and the best bakery is 1 minute from the doorway. There is a colorful market twice a week where you can buy all your fresh fruit, cheeses, olives, flowers etc. There is also a large supermarket at the village entrance for other supplies. The village is very active in social events and there are great firework displays in the summer and also the village fete at the beginning of August.
Spain and the Pyrenees are only an hour away and you are also on the doorstep of the Haut Laungedoc National Park. Little medieval villages steeped in history are everywhere. We can provide bicycles for cycling along the townpath.

My husband and I really liked the house and its central location. Capestang is a typical rural French town; small, but providing all the everyday necessities. The house was clean, comfortable and easy to maintain, with a functional kitchen for those who want to cook. Liz was very helpful, kind and hospitable. We want to go back.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

A wonderful home for our stay--the photos are accurate, and when you get there it is so much better in real life. Plenty of room for the 5 of us, the kitchen is well equipped and very functional--excellent for preparing the tasty meals from the market and local stores. The house was very clean and nicely decorated with comfortable beds. The 2 minute walk to the bakery was truly convenient for fresh breakfast baguette and/or delicious pastry depending on your daily preference. We enjoyed relaxing on the terrace with a coffee or glass of local wine. Great location for visiting other towns and sites in the Languedoc region. Our hosts were very enjoyable and full of information regarding places to visit and eat. Thank you Liz and Rene for sharing your home with us.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: You have just hit the button on why we love our house, our village and our region. Glad you made the most of it. Loved your music, Michel Plasson the big French conductor had a listen to it as well so you have played before the greatest.

The well-equipped, modern kitchen allowed us to prepare the fresh produce, meats, cheeses, etc. available from the many local markets. An ideal location for nearby sight-seeing and long walks along the Canal. Our hosts were very charming and extremely accommodating. The house was warm and cosy, especially during the few days of rain and the many novels and travel books filled any down-time we had. Two wineries in the village provided great choices at reasonable prices. We would unquestionably recommend this property.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We are so glad you enjoyed your time in this part of France at this time of year, all the benefits without all the crowds. The house is our home and as such is equipped for both the sunshine and the rain. I think you had more than your fair share of rain, so I am glad the library filled a few gray days. Loved meeting you. Bon Voyage et à bientot.

We were most pleased by everything this apartment provided. Yes, the location description was accurate-you are in the center of this little town. The photos did not show how large, nicely decorated, homey and well appointed this apartment. It was spotless and well maintained, the kitchen and cooking implements perfect, nice linens, good mattress, multi entertainment system but no English channels. The owner left some literature but was not present- so of no help. We were there in mid-November and the town of Capestang was empty with many shops/restaurants closed that week. A car is a must here to visit the surrounding towns unless you are barging the canal. I would recommend this property to all but not in November [unless you want to only veg out.]Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing.
Owner response: There is a big difference in Capestang during the winter months when there are not so many people about, that can be quite an attraction. The main shops and restaurants remain open all year, and it is only the seasonal gift shops and outdoor "guingettes" which close. Glad you enjoyed the house and the countryside.

This flat was in an excellent location. Its on what we Canadian would call the second floor of a 2 story building. It was in excellent condition and well kept. Very spacious and could easily acommdate 2 couples comfortably. Located in a quiet well appointed town with 3 bakeries and a well stocked grocer. If we are back this way wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Brian and Louise CanadaRecommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, sightseeing.
Owner response: We want our guests to feel at home in the house and are glad you enjoyed both the house and the village amenities. We like having everything within walking distance.

We have rented many gites in France and found this one to be a real gem. Capestang, with all its charm and amenities, make it a perfect base for touring the region and its historic character. Liz and Rene offer their guests a home away from home. It is a wonderful place to relax, walk and enjoy a glass of wine on either of the two terraces. What better way to start the day with a coffee and croissant from the local bakery and watch the village come to life.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 4/4

Liz and Rene just wanted to Thank-you for our stay in your home. It is lovely and your input as to suggestions on where to go in the region was very much appreciated. This was our first experience with VRBO and from the start to finish was a pleasure dealing with you. We felt right at home in your place and love the location to the village. Enjoyed the local market and our trips to the patisserie every morning. We arrived with one piece of luggage missing on arrival in Toulouse and Liz went above and beyond the call of duty to help us with that. Many phone calls and time consumed helping us.Thank-you for that Liz. We did see your barge driving one evening along the Canal du Midi but was very late and just stopped to see if it was yours..Thank -you again and we will definately be back and recommend your place to our friends..JanDid you find this review helpful? Dear Liz & Rene, Now we are back home we just wanted to take this opportunity to say how much we enjoyed staying in your beautiful accomodation. The walks by the Canal Du Midi, our wonderful meal at the La Galiniere Restaurant and the fresh morning croissants from the local boulangerie left us with a real taste of the region. After a hard days house hunting, it was a real joy to curl up in front of the wood fire with a good bottle of wine & relax. Having stayed in France many times before, we'll have pleasure in recommending your comfortable & beautifully decorated gite to family & friends.Owner response: It was a joy to welcome you into our home and delighted you enjoyed it. We hope all our guests have the same feeling as yourselves. Liz & René

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: I am Irish, my husband René is French and we own a hotel barge called Emma which we cruise on the Canal du Midi from April through to November. We bought the house in Capestang as it is right in the middle of our most popular route between Beziers and Carcassonne and being only 2 mins walk from the canal was very handy for us. After spending the summer season working on the barge we love coming back to the house to chill out. We got married in the Mairie in Capestang last year and had our wedding breakfast in the garden with our friends and family.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love this area as we are close to the sea but also close to the mountains and as we are keen off road drivers love having all the wide open space right on our doorstep.
