Casa Azul is in the small village of Esperanza on Vieques’ Caribbean side. Its spare style and simple lines evoke the Moderne architecture of the 1950s, while the lush landscaping is distinctly tropical. The house is bright and airy and has spacious patios front and back with Mexican terra cotta tile. Double French doors in the living room bring the outdoors in, and can be left open to enhance the effect. Casa Azul is within walking distance of Esperanza’s waterfront (the Maleçon), where there is a small collection of bars and restaurants. Some of the best beaches for swimming and exploring are also reachable on foot. The Caribbean is visible from the street in front of the house. Sun Bay, a large, crescent-shaped inlet with turquoise water and tall coconut palms is roughly a mile away. Renting a car is not necessary, but to truly see the island you will need one.
The house is located near the end of a dead end street, with a tiny grocery three houses away. Most essential items can be found here. Beyond the end of the street are acres of undeveloped land. Horses—both tame and wild—walk by the house at all hours. Esperanza is sometimes compared to what Key West was like when Ernest Hemingway was there. If authenticity is what you’re after, staying at Casa Azul allows you to experience a Viequense neighborhood that has remained unchanged for decades.
