Romantic Hideaway Near Artistic Leafy Canal Saint Martin

Re-invent yourself as a Parisian in this romantic apartment in the artistic quartier of Canal St Martin. Newly renovated to a high standard in 2008, 'Chez Grisette' is a 32sqm (about 345 sq ft) one-bedroom apartment on the first floor (Americans call it the second floor) of a well-maintained traditional grey stone Haussmann building with secure digicode entry.
It is situated on rue Marie et Louise, a well-lit, neighborly street just one block back from the tree-lined canal. Metro stations Republique, Jacques Bonsergent (2 stops from Gare du Nord) and Goncourt are all within a five-minute walk and there are several restaurants and cafés as well as a cocktail bar in rue Marie et Louise itself, with some of the hippest hang-outs in Paris nearby.
On entering the apartment you’ll find a new white lacquer kitchen with granite work-surfaces, bamboo floor, a café-style table and chairs for two, as well as two folding chairs. It is equipped with electric hob and oven, extractor fan, a microwave oven, dishwasher, washer-dryer, pots, pans, glasses, china, Sabatier knives and all other things you’ll need to prepare yourself a delicious meal after you’ve explored the delights of the Sunday market in rue Alibert which runs past the end of rue Marie et Louise. If you want to shop like a local, use the poussette (shopping trolley) that’s in the wardrobe by the front door.
The living room, whose large window looks out on the flower-filled balconies that run down the street, has an L-shaped sofa bed, which can be extended to sleep two, or one can sleep on it as it is. However, the apartment is best suited to a couple or two friends sharing, when you’ll have plenty of room to relax after exploring the city, perhaps watching TV or a DVD, or browsing through one of books or guidebooks in the small collection provided. Wi-Fi and telephone calls to Western Europe and North America are included in the rental price.
The intimate bedroom has a large window looking out over the street and a queen-sized bed. To keep the bedroom calm and uncluttered, ample wardrobe (closet) space is provided in the living-room with another cupboard for hanging coats, etc, near the front door of the apartment. The modern bathroom has a rain-shower over the bath, a hairdryer and magnifying mirror, while the toilet is separate. Both have towel radiators and windows.

This apartment is in a great location, near to several metro stations and bus lines, and close to the Gare du Nord. It was clean, nicely and simply furnished, with a fully equipped kitchen. Since there is no elevator, it was convenient to have the apartment just one floor up. The owner has provided an instruction book on the various appliances in the apartment and a collection of maps and other information on Paris. There are many restaurants in the area including two on the ground floor on either side of the entrance. We thought that the noise from the restaurants might be a problem but we were so tired from our long days that we slept soundly. There were several small supermarkets in the area where we shopped and the Sunday market nearby is well worth a visit. A wide selection of wines is available in the supermarkets at a third of what we are used to paying.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you for your helpful comments - and to all our previous guests who have been so positive. It's a joy to share our favourite quartier of Paris with you all.

Tucked onto a tiny, block-long side street in the 10th Arr., chez Grisette was a cozy oasis of comfort and calm; we only wish we could have stayed longer. We found wonderful local restaurants that were not written up in any guidebooks/websites and more often than not, were the only English-speakers in the place: It's a true local neighborhood, with few tourists in sight. The bright, clean apartment is fully equipped for any domestic need -- including a dishwasher and washing machine -- and clear written instructions from the owner and manager explain how everything works. Thoughtful touches include coffee, butter and jam waiting in the refrig, speedy wifi, and free long-distance 'out' calls to the US and North America. Close to local shops/cafes as well as Metro, Velib (bike stations) and taxi stations and two big train stations, chez Grisette was a perfect spot for a pair of active travellers -- who were very happy to come home to a lovely little flat at day's end.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

My husband and I rent apartments in Paris once or twice a year. I just love it there. This apartment had the most amenities of any apartment we have ever stayed in. Renata has thought of every last detail and it was greatly appreciated. Even the key chains have the loyalty card for the Franprix so you get sale prices! Aside from being wonderfully appointed, it is probably the most spotless place we have stayed in. Sheila does an amazing cleaning job and also gave us a very pleasant greeting upon our arrival. So pleased all around. Do not miss the outdoor market just around the corner on Sunday mornings! Loved our time in the 10th. Quiet, but very convenient to everything you could need in the city! Thank you Renata & Sheila. Positives: Great size for two people. Plenty of space. Wonderful shower & water pressure (even if it does spray on the floor a bit) Has everything you need to cook and shop (even a rolling cart for bringing to the market or grocery store). Converters AND adapters included. VERY comprehensive direction booklet Very comfortable and large bed 1st French floor Full-size fridge and brand new kitchen 7 minute walk to Republique 25 minute walk to Gare du Nord (RER B and airport) gorgeous canal 1 minute away can sit and picnic on grass of park outside hospital just around corner Velib bikes 1 minute walk quiet street Negatives: Thin walls/floors and extremely rambunctious and noisy upstairs neighbors who were up until 1-2am every night (thankfully we were too!!!) From a full hot water tank, you get one, 7-8 minute shower. Have to move fast to have enough time to shampoo hair and shave legs!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

We booked Chez Grisette last February for our visit in December 2012, from descriptions in the VRBO listing, basing our decision on the descriptions, photos and guest comments we found. We had been considering 3 properties for our stay, and the deciding factor came down to guest comments, which in the case of Chez Grisette were uniformly positive. On arrival, we found the description to be exactly as we had seen and expected. Likewise the photos gave an accurate picture of the space, the furnishings and amenities. And, most important, the place was exceptionally clean and well maintained. Renata, the property owner, was most helpful in answering questions and in explaining rental terms and conditions. We felt after talking and corresponding with her that we were in good hands. Indeed, we would definitely stay there on our next visit to Paris, and would not hesitate to recommend it to friends. We enjoyed that it was close to all the big sites - we used Goncourt Metro station in most cases to get downtown. But even very close by there are excellent cafes and restos. We dined twice at PhiLou which is out the door, a right turn to the corner, then right again for 50 meters. Both times delicious. A tip for Canadians who enjoy their coffee - drop in to Ten Belles, one long block north along the canal, then right and halfway down the street - ask for cafe filtre.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you! And thanks too for that cafe suggestion - I'll try it next time I'm "chez moi" in Paris.

My wife and I stayed at Chez Grisette for a week at the end of September 2012. We enjoyed the apartment - it's nicely furnished and has a modern and well equipped kitchen. It's a good choice for two people. The location is fine, about a block and half from Canal St. Martin which is nice to visit or go for a walk on a warm evening. We also enjoyed the restaurants in the area - two great ones on the same block (one traditional French and the other Italian). There are three metro stations within 4 to 5 blocks of the apt. (Republic is a bit more useful than the other two) and there is a bus that picks up at Republic and drops off about a block from the apt building. Renata is pleasant to communicate with and the rental process was easy. All in all we had a very nice stay in the apartment and hope to staying here again. We recommend it to anyone wanting to experience a typical French neighborhood from a comfortable and modern apartment, we enjoyed it very much.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, tourists without a car.

My wife and I go to Paris once a year for business and decided to pick an apt. in a new area of the city. The Canal Saint Martin was such a refreshing change. It's like old Paris, with the Parisians hanging out at nite on the canal, and the street cafes overflowing with people at both ends of the street. There is a great Cambodian restaurant at the end of the street, a market, boutiques and cafe's up and down the canal, and really the best part was no tourist! The apt. is very modern, we loved the kitchen design and the rain shower head in the bathroom was awesome. The bed was very comfortable with high count cotton sheets. We kept the windows opened the whole time, traffic noise was very minimum and the evening sounds from the cafes was entertaining to us. We will return to Chez Grizelle and the Canal Saint MartinRecommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car.

My wife and I just spent a wonderful week in Paris, and staying in Chez Grisette is an important part of the experience. The place is absolutely spotless, clean, clean, clean, and everything, down to the minor detail, is provided for. (small ziploc containers to save leftover foie gras) It is a small apartment, and it's wonderful how so much is fit into a tiny space. The bedroom is small (in terms of North American standard), but the bed is comfortable. The drapes is heavy enough to keep the room relatively dark. The window opens wide, and yes, the street noise can be persistent. We learned to keep the local schedule, so by the time we really need to fall asleep, the noise is pretty much gone. The bathroom is functional. The tub is rather deep, so it might be cumbersome for persons with mobility issues. I love the ceiling spray shower (I will remember it when bathroom renovation is due) The only complaint I have is the half sized shower door which prevented me from fully enjoying the shower. The WC is tiny. Oh well, I just have to finish my business in there, and get out quick! The kitchen is amazing. Everything is built in with cabinet panelling. (It would have been a really high end kitchen in N Am) I ended up cooking most of our meals there. We made our hearty breakfast every morning. While we were out, we would shop for the ingredients. When we got home, nice simple meals complete with baguette, cheese, and wine. Heavenly. The neighbourhood is very nice, and quiet during the day. (Full of activities around the cafes at night). We just loved the canal. No kidding about the leafy part. We spent a lot of time walking along the canal and watching the boats passing the locks. My wife found a lot of small shops, all within ten minutes walk, that she could spend weeks there without going into the same one. Sorry about the long winded review, Just to show how much we enjoyed our stay. Needless to say, we didn't do too much of the touristy thing. However the one week transit pass, and the proximity of metro stations and bus stops allowed us the freedom when we did want to go. (Eiffel Tower at night is a MUST SEE.) All in all, an enthusiastic two thumbs up.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car.

Not much to add to all the previous stellar reviews – they are right on the money– this is one the cleanest, best equipped, most ideal locations, nicest owner and on-site manager for a VR we have had the pleasure staying with (and we have experienced several in multiple countries). The only thing that I will add is that we were a party of three, my husband and I as well as our university aged son, and the size of the apartment worked just fine for us. The sleep sofa was easy to set up and very comfortable with lots of extra pillow and linens. When our other son who is living in Paris joined us, the extra fold-out chairs allowed us to even to cook and serve dinner for four in the apartment. We were often four in the evenings and before setting off for our day touring and the apartment was always a cool comfortable space in the heat of August! Only one small addition- we saw a small picture poster in my son’s apartment that showed what household items could be recycled and we thought that would be a perfect addition to the all the helpful notes that were provided with the apartment. Not a big thing though!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

THe property was as described and was very clean. Krystyna, the property manager met us as agreed upon a couple of days earlier, and went over the operation of all the appliances, phone and TV, she also left us her contact information if we needed to contact her for any reason. We did and she responded very promptly. I would recommend this place to relatives and friends without hesitation. There are plenty of restaurants in the area as well as grocery stores, bakery shops all within a 5-10 minute walk. St. Martin Canal is also just a 5 minute walk where many people meet friends and socialize. Bus stops and the Metro stop are also within 5 minutes and using the metro one can get to any of the tourist attractions within 10-15 minutes. We always felt safe in the area, no matter when we were out, early morning or later at night. It was unusally hot while we were there, and we were able to cool the apartment down with the fan provided and opening the windows in the sitting room and bedroom. We did have to close the bedroom window to block the noise from the near by bars and restaurants. It was great to be in a smoke and pet free apartment. Thank You Renata, for renting out Chez Grisette, and to your manager Krystyna.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0
